Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1885818

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Not really useful information, but something I observed happening recently. The more I study anatomy, facial features and styles, the worse anime and nearly 80% of all the artwork I see on the Internet looks. Most of it is so much more simple than I ever thought. It was like magic before I started studying. Like, if you don't know the process for something, anything can appear awesome to the untrained eye kind of thing. Too bad I still suck at art though.

yukataro DA BEST
right now i just appreciate it as long the artist is good with expressing things with their characters. for me that's already worth a lot, and i'd like to go there with my own art as well. anatomy should always play the second fiddle to expression.

In the last thread someone mentioned adoptables. I've seen them (A LOT) but what the fuck are they used for? What does it mean to "adopt" a character or a drawing, do they use it for roleplay or something? That's the only thing I can think of, but when I roleplay, I'd never want a character made by someone else.

That would be me in the last thread.
Adoptables are the biggest fucking scam, but furrys on DA cant get enough.
How it works is that you take a crappy picture of some wolf or whatever on someones page and you offer to redraw and sell it to them for no less than $20.
Do lineart or whatever, even slap on some cell shading if you want.
They happily oblige and you get easy dough in your pocket that took less than 30 min.

Draw more chubby characters?
>tfw they only draw chubby fat female characters because they cant into anatomy and use pillowy gestures because they are lazy.

>cant into bone structure or muscles
>complain when people make characters who have definition or muscle

Ohh, okay. That makes sense, then.
I guess I'll ask a discussion question then.
I've spent a long time learning anatomy and building a foundation and all, and for the last 3 years or so, whenever I go to a portfiolio review I've been told that my foundation is pretty solid but I need some "umph", basically a style. Some have said style just comes to you while you draw, some have said you have to consciously choose from art styles you like. I feel like I like too huge a range of styles to narrow it to a cohesive style, but it doesn't seem like anything unique is developing on its own so - the most nebulous of questions, here - how do I go about developing my style?

if there is an artist you like, try to copy his art once or twice. if you really like it then incorporate some of that into your own art.

"style" is all about your taste. just do what you want, and make it look good. if you are lost, look at some of your favorite artists for reference. don't be afraid to learn from others.

from the sound of it you still seem like an beginner or intermediate, so just be adventurous.

some other things you can do:
-try different mediums.
-put some rules/restrictions on yourself

Though I dont go out much, except for work and school, clothed sex is becoming my top fetish.
Why did I tell you that?

Yup, I'd definitely do her.

Serious now. There is a definite feminine touch to the piece, maybe it's the background. I'm not seeing any huge mistakes, but would love to see the curled hair on the ground have a bit more body. I love the way you use colors. I haven't studied enough and not sure I can put it in the correct words. But it's a nice blend of warm and cool, complementing and contrasting without competing for the eye's attention.

Do you have a place I could follow your work?

It's because we're anonymous we say such things, if we had names we'd all play along nicely and conform to the expected courtesies of society. Meh, I'd probably say something along those lines, though not so crude.

Mostly I repeated that statement because it's something I said in the previous thread, and was referencing back, and revealing there was deeper thinking behind my earlier rude comment of simply "I'd do her". Sort of a "I've been keeping an eye on your progress", more than what appears to be "artist is a girl, I want fuck." Since I had the said the same thing before, the meaning would be lost on someone who missed that detail.

Regardless, I do think there's something special about the piece, notably the color. And it'd be nice if someone else had something to say about the piece, rather than get out of sorts about the one negative thing I said.

there are some rules you could make, but most people do it by feel.
try to experiment with heavy and light lines. that way you can figure out the strength of each.

from what i can see you aren't making any light lines at all.

>> No.1891361

>>1891339
Things close to the camera has a heavier line, things away much thinner.

Also take into account thin material such as hair( so the first rule doesn't exactly count for that)

Instead of relying on drawing cliche poses from memory, you should try to better construct the figure. Look at that spine, draw it out if you have to.

I think there is a graphic design board now that can better answer your question, how ever since there are many devices capable of viewing websites it the site should supports dynamic resizing of images.

How ever with the industry still pushing 1080 as height resolution for HD though the majority of devices only support 720, it would be fair to assume you shouldn't go beyond 1080 as your smallest dimension as examples and no smaller than 720.

eg. 16:9 where 9 is your smallest factor
> 16(1080/9):1080
> 1920:1080

Or A4 ratio 1.41:1
>1.41(1080):1080
>1523:1080

While fine for web viewing but overall considerations is how it will be viewed (in frames, as an overlay etc) and if you start in these resolutions if you ever so wish to have it printed, it'll be as tiny 3.6x5.1 inches on 300dpi printers.

tl;dr - It's complicated, ask >>>/gd/

it looks like you drew the first picture on the 31st of october, then you discovered tumblr and really liked their styles, so you drew the next one on the 1st of november. The skill level is exactly the same, but you decided to make her a yellow skinned lesbian with the weirdest eyebrows and her nose looks like somebody shove up a popsicle stick in there when she was a baby. And don't forget hideously large outlines to make you look like you can't convey edges! (you can, looking at the scarf on the first one.)

So curvilinear perspective? That's not really "stylized" anything, and I haven't a clue why you're asking that here.

Show an example of what you're trying to do. Chances are it has nothing to do with stylization in the conventional sense.

Tbh I think the november picture is better, but it also has some problems the october one didn't (due to the more challenging angle, probably?). I've personally made the experience that I do get a little better over long breaks but not nearly as much as through daily practice.

In the newer version the shape of the eyes is much more appealing and the strands of hair have cleaner, more pleasant shapes as well.
If the character is female you managed to convey that better in the november version.

Scarf looked much nicer in the older version, as the other anon said. I think the color of the scars was more convincing in the october picture as well, they look almost like a sort of face paint in the recent one.
Skintone is a little better now, but still kind of dull.
When choosing a background keep in mind that the color of shadows is influenced by the color of their surroundings (because of reflected light), so don't go with an unappealing grey like that.
Right now her hair almost blends with the background as well. Stuff like that is fine in areas if you're working with high contrast, but I'd avoid it in a simple portrait like this.

Usually the eyes/brows line up with the top of the ears. There can be some variation from person to person, but it's rather extreme here so I'd suggest to either move the eyes down or the ear up - or a bit of both.
Since we're speaking of the ear, unless someone is balding their hairline should begin in front of the ear, not behind it.

Hope this was helpful and not too much at once.
