Another update, I guess. I still think it's going better but it's so hard to define forms while rendering and defining value and lighting. He has the same face as my Dante because I can't be loose enough to mess with his features. Frustrating, but hopefully slogging through this will make the next one easier.

don't listen to that guy. Darker shadow will increase contrast in that area and nose shadow will become a focal point.
Shadow under nose in this case shouldn't be darker then upper lip and shadow under bottom lip. It would also kill that ghost-look

! i actually noodled around with the facial features for millennia and had a much stronger cast shadow below the nose initially. then i remembered that shadows don't add and at most there would be a slight cast shadow caused by the occlusion of the light bouncing back into the face from the underside of the hat. and indeed i feel a very soft shadow worked out better, also because it keeps the values grouped more cleanly (and this is something i have to improve on!)

thanks for feedback and thoughts anons

Yeah, that's what I meant to happen when I suggested it. Right now it almost looks like the face should be a focal point but the least amount of detail is there so now it looks like everything around the face is in focus and the face is out of focus, and that just looked weird to me, but oh well.

this ones supposed to be about following false prophets. The soldiers are protecting the 3 suffering people. the shadows are being cast towards the sun, implying there is another light source behind them, and althought they are in this "light" they are still suffering. I posted this in the last thread, anon said I fucked up the anatomy on the neck and collarbones.

I tried fixing them a bit, although it's done in pen so what I have to work with is limited. Still looks like shit, is there anything specific I should be looking for? I looked at some collarbone references and I can't seem to figure it out.

I tried getting the shoulder and upper parts of the arm anatomically correct though, and I'm not sure if it worked out.

Anyway, general critiques or specific explanations as to why this is shit, thanks.

This is my first time ever coloring an image, man this is hard! I know it's still far from finished, but do you guys have any pointers at this stage about how to go on from here?

Two little side notes:
I'm aware that its still pretty desaturated and lacks contrast. I've tried a couple things to add contrast but it kinda just made it look weird (like darkening the area under her left breast, which made me lose the feminin softness I'm trying to go for.. Any ideas anyone?)

Also: her body is monochromatic, and I guess it'd be a good idea to change that. Any ideas as to what colors could be used here, or is there like a general rule of thumb or so? (like using colors from the environment maybe?)

Thanks a lot everyone!

What the other anon said, the arm and hand are huge. The arm can pass as normal, but the hand is horrendous: look at the pinky, it's bigger than any other finger, the space between the fingers is so wide it's funny. The veins on his arm only help this picture I am forming in my head that he found out about the fappening just now, his arm is about to explode after all the exercise, but he can't take the grin off face.

But in all seriousness, for fuck's sake, anon, experiment blocking in shadows with a bigger brush. Sometimes rough small brush strokes look cool, mostly on details, but without caution it can look very dirty, amateurish. Also, it could be less of a pain in the ass for you when painting. I am looking at the roughly painted pants and I am imagining the suffering you went through to cover all this area with a smal brush, like you are trying to paint a wall with a toothbrush. This is a great example of the kind of areas that would look way better if blocked with a bigger brush, these kind of large areas with small values variation.

happens to all of us. if you insist you will usually get feedback (such as right now). don't be afraid of being obnoxious. i like the drawing, there's just not much there to crit. consider it really good if it's done from imagination, despite the fact that the angle is easymode you describe the features confidently and they have a lot of character. values need work and you might want to start looking into color so you can more accurately describe form.

one example to illustrate what i mean by that, is this ruanjia painting. same easymode front view. however you can spot by the nose that there's a subtle difference in the temperature and value of the shadows which describe its sides. this is one principle you could apply to your drawing to further its illusion of 3d, if you chose to take it further.

The one with the JFK text in the background made me laugh, and the Magical Truck Adventure one was pretty good too.

What to work on depends on what you want to do. If you want your stuff to be more realistic, then anatomy and life drawing is the way to do, if you want better comics in general then study composition, especially with books like Framed Ink, etc. It all depends on what you want to improve on. The humour is there though and I like it, so please don't get rid of that while focusing on artistic improvement.

Hey! I think a large part of what's causing you problems in this is the lack of good, solid forms in your drawing. You have some good stuff going on here that implies some masses, like the ribcage, the shoulder muscle, and the overlapping lines on the arms which help us imagine that this is a body moving in a 3D space, so now you've just got to push it further. Envision the pose from multiple angles, and try acting it out yourself to see where each of your limbs are going and how far they reach. I'm sure you've heard the spiel about building up the form with simple objects to begin with, like cubes and cylinders, which I feel would help out here a lot. Arms are basically just tubes connected by an elbow, so if you can manipulate cylinders freely with your drawing, things should start to make more sense!

For me, learning anatomy helped me understand what kinds of forms I could use to help construct each part of the body, so >>1886692 's advice might help out, too. Hampton can be a little confusing and intimidating to start with, though, and I often see artists turn into Hampton clones after studying him extensively, but he's definitely worth reading.

I know you only asked for help with the arms, but there are some other things that you should be weary of! While the rendering is helping to define some parts of the body, the drawing itself is very outline-y. There's no real definition on the torso, abdomen, or thighs, aside from the bathing suit. You don't have to draw every crease and change of direction, of course, but breaking up the contour so it's not a single curve going from the breast all the way down will make the character feel like less of a cardboard cutout.

My tablet's broken, so I couldn't do a redline per se, but I did a redraw! I borked some of the details and the styles are obviously very different, so take it how you will, but I hope it helps in some way.

3 hours isn't really acceptable for a sketch. Do more gesture drawings 5 minutes each, then wrap up with a 30 minute

>> No.1887291

>>1887289
I know it's not acceptable, this probably would've taken 20 minutes if I'd drawn it traditional..
The sad thing is, I meant for this to be a bunch of quick sketches anyway. I keep trying to start these quick and loose but they end up being poorly structured. I'll try again to do something fast and loose, although I have a feeling it's going to take a lot more of these slow, controlled ones before I get used to the tablet enough to draw anything quickly without royally screwing it.

In general. The thing that will make any character look decent is the ability to fool the eye into thinking something is correct. The measure that is used would indeed be human anatomy if the subject is a human. Liberties can be taken of course, but at the end of the day you're tricking the viewer into seeing something that appears human based on landmarks in actual human anatomy.

thoughts on this painting im doing for someone so far?
the background was originally going to be gradient yellow, since the dogs name is sunny. but he also siad how he wanted to dog to look "presidential" so i thought it'd be cool to add like a bookcase and window in the back. im not sure how im doing with the colors though, i have really limited choices (yellow, black, white, magenta).
should i add more purple in the dogs fur? also i have green as well, should i incorporate that somewhere?

Anyway I thought it wasn't just me. I mean even if stuff didn't look all that off, I still expect a certain amount of stylization or interpretation in a redline so like you said, I wouldn't usually put much stock in them unless they're for something more general like pushing the pose or composition, something that still leaves room to do my own work. How do you mean? Yeah I like doing it, learning a lot I think. I draw in pencil all the time, but I feel I'm not learning enough by not doing digital stuff, so I'm starting to do that every day as well. Any recommendations on what to do? Is this good exercise? How's the approach based on what you can see? The next still I'll be doing will focus more on values rather than color, as this one did. I think I should focus on getting the basics down value wise first, maybe grayscales? From ref pics maybe.

Lol, rambling on

Might not be apparent from this but I started with a more organic sketch and went with guides only after I established my sketch, but I'm still wondering if it's the right way to approach things.

How is it dumb and destructive, exactly?

To be honest, if I ever get accused of bashing I'll take it as a compliment, unless, of course, I actually was bashing and trying to sell it off as painting...

Skepticism is perfectly acceptable, if you don't like it, I think you are the one with a problem, since if you were sure you didn't bash, you'd feel like a badass for making your painting look that real.

If you bashed and are trying to come off as a master, and someone calls you out, you get hostile obviously, it's far from a compliment, it compromises your lies ;)

Just my 2 cents, but you're the one making claims of being called a basher before, so I'd love to see where this comes from. I've never been called one, my stuff doesn't look nearly good enough, but I don't see anything wrong with keeping the industry sincere and open.

These techniques EXIST. We can mention them.

BTW I'm skeptical too. If both paintings are his and they are not bashed or heavily reffed, nice work! If they are, still nice work, but you're lying to yourself if it is
