Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1876180

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Mikufag, please watch porn of girls with small breasts. You draw them as if they were miniature versions of bigger breasts, which is just wrong. All breasts are the same at their connection point to the chest, bigger breasts just have more fat and are pushed out more, while smaller breasts are flatter. First off are you using water-colour paper?
Tool are very important in water-colour. Use a brush that can hold water.
Go to youtube and search up water-colour demos to understand techniques like wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry. You still need to lean basics like light and shadow to apply that to water-colour.

I've got watercolor paper and decent watercolors, a step up from generic but a step under professional. The store only had ones from $8, $35, and $120, so I took the middle ground..

if it says in the book "do this exercise" then yes. if it's just, like, an anatomy book then either just note it for reference or use it for your model. it really depends on how you learn, I can study anatomy/positions and later I can reproduce them (there is a muscle there, attaches like that; a knee bent like this would have that shape) but I couldn't tell you where I saw it.

I'd specifically look for exercises until you look at the exercises and go "this shit is too basic!" and then look for anatomy illustrations to render etc.

I'd have to see your work to give more guidance... but hell you're looking at the books, that's like 90% of the usual battle!

Fucking love it.
Keep the eyes, they work to cohesively hold the style on the knives, wrinkles and hair/outlines.
Don't add too much more to the sweater, it's not the focal point.
Definately make the peak of the head more uniform (but still a little bumpy, just like the jaw/chin) and maybe make the transition to the hair a tiny bit smoother without rendering too much.
Another personal note would be to add some more shine/warmth to the bulb of the nose. Not enough to make it tumblr tier, just enough to stop it receding like it is.

Please don't overwork this, I think it looks really strong.

Pretty solid overall. Instead of nitpicking small details, I'll comment that the overall composition can be better. The dog has me looking back and forth to the man and it instead of focusing on the picture as a whole. Our eyes naturally follow the direction that other heads are turned towards and that dog's head points to nowhere straight out the picture. I also find the dog's emotion doesn't fit well either without context. If this was cropped out of a bigger scene or will be used in one, then ignore what I've said.

>thought that i could make a contrast...
That's what I thought at first as to why the dog was facing the other way. So the intent was at least able to get through (albeit via analysis from an artist, not the average viewer). For the (usual) strong composition featuring contrasting elements, the contrast comes from not only how the elements differ from each other, but how they interact with one another in the scene as well. Keeping that in mind when planning will improve many similar compositions in the future.

>i studied sticky for 4 months

The sticky is mostly a list of books that are recommended or sometimes even mandatory reading by almost any art school, university or atelier in the world. Learning the basics of figure drawing, perspective and construction is the foundation for anything within representational art and most of those books are doing an excellent job teaching that.

If you seriously believe that the teachings of the likes of Vilppu, Bridgman, Loomis, Hampton and co are completely useless, then there is something wrong with your brain and you will never improve, no matter what you do.

Disregard that one is partially painted and the other isn't, but which proportions are more appealing and how can I make them more appealing? I'm trying to figure out how to I suppose "cartoonize" designs to make them more distinct. Big upper body, little legs for the tanky guy, etc, but I have no idea if I'm doing it right.

I need to make designs for 10 or so characters for a friend's rpg and I really hate for them to all look like the same guy wearing different outfits. Is there something I can read specifically related to non-realistic/exaggerated proportions?

porn=/=small breasts in tha reel wurl.

Porn, at least when it comes to small breasts, tends to stick to precisely one type of "breast shape" (not sure how to phrase it). What mikufag draws, and what >>1881907 describes are perfectly viable breasts, and rather common. The only thing that MIGHT change that and make them "need" to be more flat is the fact that she almost appears to be leaning back, which stretches breast tissue, making them appear more flat and closer to the chest, at least in girls who are small-average sized. (Though the reference appears to just be sitting up straight..)

Pictured: Itty bitty tubular titties from the Normal Breast Gallery. This is a pretty average shape, and I've personally seen breasts in this shape both larger and smaller than the ones pictured, and larger and smaller than mikufag has drawn them.

Oh, and as a follow up, many girls who do have the sort of breasts these anons are describing (perfect 3/4th circles placed on), look very much like the picture posted if the subject has poor posture, is hunched over, lying down on their stomachs (if there were no bed there), on their hands and knees, and especially on their elbows and knees assuming the arms go "above" their shoulders.

Does anyone know if there are any good "how to draw manga" books? Specifically by Japanese authors but in English? The ones I own are in pic related. I know the Katy Coope ones are shit, the Christopher Hart one is slightly better, and the other one is pretty good I think. Still... I feel like one by an actual Japanese person might be better, like more authentic if that makes sense. idk if that's racist or something. also, sorry if this is not the right place to ask. it seemed to make the most sense. Depending on what you mean, that statement is wrong. A lot behind how the art is created escapes the viewer. There are actually many books that can impart knowledge of how it's done. But they are in Japanese, which contributes to why the knowledge is not as well known outside of Japan.

The characters in actual anime need to be drawn from any angle and perspective, so there needs to be a structural foundation, otherwise it would be impossible to consistently animate them. The anatomy may be simplified, but there is an underlying foundation to it. Obviously shitty deviant art tier animu drawings often times lack that, but that has nothing to do with anime style in general. Bad realistic drawings lack that foundation just as much.

Reference from other Artists who have their fundamentals down and at the same time are able to translate these fundamentals into stylized work and can successfully give that "cute" look while at the same time describe a believable figure without it looking jarring or unpleasant, this is probably the most difficult part of it is to be able to find that fine median between a simplified figure yet believable in space.

After studying from another Artist and finding out how they proportion the figure (especially the head and face) use what you've learned from the Artist and apply that onto a real world reference and see how you can problem solve.

As long as the Artist has their fundamentals it wont hurt to pick up a thing or two.

Alright, I guess that'll come in time. Right now I'm still a beginner, and I'd like to draw cute characters (like perhaps making monsters cute and what not) but I'm still reading up on Loomis work as well as still learning my fundamentals.

Once I get to that level, I'll look further into that and see what can be done. Using the same character from before (Medli from Wind Waker), I think this looks cute. That image of the animu girl you posted I think looks gross.

Medli can be broken down to "blook lines" the very same technique found from Loomis in fun with a pencil can be used to draw the same thing you posted however it takes an understanding of linear perspective and the ability to describe things in space to fool the viewer into thinking this can exist in three dimensional space.

Wokada takes it a step further using his knowledge of anatomy to build forms ontop of other forms while at the same time give a gesture that further communicates with the viewer on what the figure is doing.

You can start by breaking down Medli into basic forms and shapes and basically turn her into a "blook" just like the caricatures found in fun with a pencil it may be from the 1950
s but it is using the same principles.

I think the facial expression and pose don't really make sense together, why would she pose like that if she's in a bad mood? Anger tends to make people take a slightly hunched posture, not a very open one like this.
If she has to pose for some reason it would be more likely for her to try to control her expression as well but failing somewhat, looking sort of tense. In your drawing her face looks more relaxed grumpy, like talking shit about others with her friends or complaining about plot holes in her favourite show or something like that.

Use a mechanical pencil with relatively soft leading so it shows in the scan. But you have bigger [rpblems if you ask me. Your charactors are really stiff and one look at your attempt at drawing hands shows how little you know of anatomy. That and the fact that all your panels are static (one size). You may as well add a few inbetweens and call it an animation. What the point of doing comic books if you are going to use boring one sized panels?

I mean of course you can do comics for fun, but I hope you are also doing studies to help improve too anon.
