How do I learn to watercolor like pic related as opposed to those old lady landscapes or tumblr tier portraits where the colors are over-saturated and run like crazy?

by painting with watercolor as opposed to asking questions of a bunch of anonymous internet teenagers who do nothing but digitally draw dragons and epic medieval swordsmen and watch animated Taiwanese storybooks all day

Calm down with that edge, son. You'll cut yourself.

Those artists like Cotman for example, had excellent drawing skills and then took forever painstakingly adding light washes.
Have you seen any in the flesh ? We have in the house and the work is MINUTE to cram all the details in.

Also, I recommend John Ruskin.
"The Elements of Drawing", which does cover how him & PRB bros tackled scenes of nature. My version has illustrations and editing by Bernard Dunstan & is britty gud.

I used to have a few pdf on how old masters handle watercolor medium but my HDD died and I never bother to search for it again, mind you those books are written in old times and mostly words without pictures. you can try to search for them though I got it from google book and archive.org

Yeah i've found a few and while I love the style of writing and don’t mind the lack of illustrations (Love old textbooks) somthing a bit more practical would be useful.

>shit taste

this is the boring shit Hitler was rejected twice from art school for doing while progressive modernists that could do more than copy shit they were looking at (why bother? Just take a photo) were accepted. Artists like Egon Schiele and other "degenerates" were accepted because they actually added something in their drawings and paintings that photography couldn't.

just beat up the model and break some of their bones before taking the photo

hitler was rejected not for his architectural paintings but because of his shit figure drawing.

he said in his book that they suggested he go into architecture instead.

well, for the most part paintings like your one there are very small. it also looks like it has a dead color layer, like a monochrome underpainting. then not even much tinting. just some blue washes, a little bit of brown in the figures and the foreground and that's it. then there's a bit of opaque white here and there.

so unfortunately i think it comes down to skill and grace rather than techniques.

Glazing. You build up layers and layers up thinly applied paint.

>> No.1866512

Why would you want to use watercolor for this when most other types of paint are much more convenient?

Yeah, this is all glazing. Make sure to let the layer completely dry before applying the next one.

Neither, like the cheeto stains that build up on your fat fingers over weeks.
