Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1845576

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

I second the recommendation for Scott McCloud's books when it comes to framing/storytelling, though I think Making Comics is more useful for practical purposes. Understanding Comics is an interesting read and great if you want to analyze comics, but it doesn't quite tell you how to go about implementing this stuff yourself.

If you want to improve the pose itself it might also be a good idea to look into gesture drawing.

Dude your reading comprehension is like, totally not there dude. I'm not saying he should stop drawing chicks, I'm saying his current strengths/potential looks like metallic objects. So like, if he focused on that more he'd have a solid comfort zone to branch off to drawing mechagirls where he can solely focus on anatomy. But that's just my opinion, dude.

I tend to do backgrounds with paint (watercolor or gouache). Of course I already have this stuff around, no idea wether it would be cheaper than marker ink if I had to buy the stuff first - then again, I think relatively cheap stuff is good enough for doing backgrounds like that.

>Full body shots exacerbate inking errors since the face is so small.

Well you could simply draw on larger paper.
As for suggestions... getting better is mostly about mileage, especially early on, so just do whatever you enjoy and will motivate you the most.

Practicing to render metal would help with your mechs, studying facial structure with drawing cute girls. It seems to me like your front view faces have improved quite a bit, but that sideview in 2 is pretty bad - skulls are much broader than that, especially with hair on top.

Clothing could also use some work. Mostly in regards to folds/drapery (almost everything you draw looks like it's made of really thick fabric, which looks odd on a summer dress or underwear), though the outfits also look rather dated to me - that might be intentional, in which case stick to it, but I thought it might be worth pointing out in case it wasn't.

You could also practice hands a bit if you want to do anatomy but are tired of faces.

Or you could try drawing a dude for once - probably not something you're super excited about drawing, but it's good if you know how to do it and might be an interesting challenge.

Or some less humanoid mechs? Either something more monstrous or something based on cool animals.

so I found a "how to draw transformers" book, and it goes over cartooned metal surfaces, but I can't decide if I should study cartooned surfaces or real metal (probably real). All of my line work is always stylized so it wouldn't match... It's kinda like doing skin tones - should they be real or stylized?

>sideview in 2 is pretty bad
Yea, thought I'd give it a try to push the angles - proof that more practice is needed, I wouldn't want to get too comfortable...

I like the face, has attitude. But besides that there are a few mistakes you should fix.

You haven't decided if she'll be standing or leaning and that's why the neck is going in two different directions in the back and in the front.
This resulting in a horizontally stretched skull and a thick looking neck.
This can happen if you draw the front and back parts of the head separately, dunno if you did that in that case but make sure you lay on a rough sketch before starting the details.
Also it's important to note that if that hand belongs to her left arm it should be reversed.
And lastly, don't forget to connect the jawline to the ear, cause that strand of hair can distract you.

Otherwise, I think your lines are just fine and look smooth. Personally, I just use the pen/airbrush tool for lines of all kind and just redo them 'till they look good. But maybe that's not the most efficient way to do things lol. Good luck!

Mex from refs - tried to speed draw #1 and #2 did both in about an 1.5 hrs, but half of the time was spent trying to bleed my black prisma color dry. 3 of the 12 gray scales in my variety pack are black... why?

Not gonna lie, got a little cocky and broke out the Bristol board for #3

>#1 trying random shit with green and blue, no coherent light source, really bad
>#2 tried to be a little more deliberate in my coloring, made everything dark and evil - forgot the secondary light source where the eye is...
>#3 copied my favorite Jake Parker dinosaur. Bristol Board + Pocket Brush + Copics = insane. I wasted so much potential.

I might do a different Dino tomorrow - same materials. Seriously, Bristol board is amazing, copics blend better and the pocket brush doesn't bleed at all, it's like you are supposed to use all the good materials together...

>> No.1850341

>>1849954
> should they be real or stylized?

I'd suggest doing both. You probably want to go with something simplefied for your actual drawings, but just with anatomy it's good to learn how things work first so you actually know what it is that you're exaggerating or toning down.

Studying already stylized versions helps because you can see how someone else went about simplefying something.
Also, frankly, sometimes drawing something realistically is a bit overwhelming early on even when you understand it in theory, so it helps with that too. You can always do more real life studies once doing a simpler version is easier.

>Any good refs for simple modern clothes?

No idea honestly, most refs I have are either more elaborate stuff or for fantasy. I guess you could check out online shops? Or fashion related parts of tumblr or pinterest or something like that?
Either way, here's a video about doing folds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHRSPNkGxQo&index=37&list=UUKtu_JtQCY0yryIy6zK4ZCg

>>1850241
Dinosaur mech is awesome, saturated colors work well in this case.

Green and blue in 1 look good together, reminds me a bit of the color certain bugs have, even though they're much darker. That said, I don't think the color palette of 1 really works as a whole, would probably have looked better if the ground was a different color.

I think you would find it easier if you first made a sketch and then painted over it, also if you tried to be more precise on the placement of color/value blocks, if you plan on rendering, pay attention to edge control, and also push the contrast and saturation, because right now the colors/values are off (don't use sliders, try to eyeball it).
Basically, observe your reference more carefully, squint, and paint zoomed out.

>> No.1852336

Well, concept art can go into very different directions as well, stuff for a shooter is going to look very different from something for a disney movie.

My suggestion would be to look up tons of artists, think about what it is that you like about their work and what you don't like. Chances are, you'll notice patterns of what appeals to you.
These things will give you a good idea of where you want to go and what to practice, aside from basic stuff like anatomy or perspective or values/composition.

Some people swear by picking one area and studying the hell out of it until they have it down because you learn faster that way (and then move on to the next thing), but personally I feel like it's important to change things up every now and then to keep yourself motivated.
And it seems like you don't quite know where you want to go yet, so it's important to try out new things to figure out what you have the most fun doing.

To be honest, it seems to me like your biggest issue is that you lack mileage, getting good at something requires putting in lots of hours.
This might sound discouraging if you have a hard time motivating yourself to sit down and draw every day, but on the bright side you will definitely get there eventually if you just keep at it.

Alright. That makes a lot of sense. In the past I've had little time to draw, because of work/school/etc. but I've been spending more and more time working at it now.

So do you think I have like, the potential to get better in a meaningful way? I just stress about whether I just don't have the knack and just won't be able to improve past where I'm at.

And beyond that, do you think it's possible to get the same results out of working on anatomy/figure drawing/composition through digital stuff as opposed to physical mediums?

>the potential to get better in a meaningful way

I think almost everyone has that. It might go a little faster for some, but getting good is much more about how much time and effort you put into it than any sort of talent or pre-existent knowledge.

>get the same results out of working on anatomy/figure drawing/composition through digital stuff as opposed to physical mediums

Digital is just another medium, and like all others it has its advantages as well shortcomings. That said, what matters is that you aquire the knowledge you need to draw or paint well, and most of that stays the same regardless of the medium you're working in, so it doesn't matter that much what you're using.
(The only thing that really changes is the knowledge about how to handle the medium you're working with itself and what it's limitations are - that's obviously going to be different for each one.)

One thing to keep in mind with digital is to not get carried away with undoing and redrawing lines too often instead of actually thinking about where something is meant to go, but it's easy enough to practice that with digital as well if you set yourself limitations like not using undo at all for a sketch or things like that.

Of course, in some situations it's easier to use pencil and paper, like when you're sketching people in a coffee shop, or going to a life drawing class.

Generally speaking I'd recommend trying out traditional stuff as well if you get the chance because every medium requires you to approach things a bit differently which is both fun as well as turning you into a more well-rounded artist, but there's plenty of skilled people who don't really do anything besides digital work.
I would personally recommend keeping a traditional sketchbook though, because otherwise you can only draw stuff when you're at the computer - and that would limit your opportunities for practicing somewhat.

One of my bad habits is not doing full bodied figures hence the weird way they're added now as I try to fix it. They're way off but i gotta totter off to work now so I can't be fucked with it at the moment. Just leaving it here for now.

her face is seriously wonky. sorta looks like a halibut with all the features sliding around to the side.

study realistic proportions. drop stylized works from imagination for a while and do some actual studies. You're not going to get better in a vacuum.

>>1852370
it's off because he (she?) has a horseface. that chin would put jay leno to shame. Also, praying-mantis-scale arms.

everyone has "potential to get better in a meaningful way." But not by just drawing the same old comfort zone stuff from our own heads. If you want to change, you have to have something in front of you that you're working towards.

for example, recently I realized my stylized eyes i had been drawing without reference looked like shit. Someone pointed out I was stuck and they were right. So I've been doing studies of both real eyes and animu shit and I can already see the improvement.

>>1852163
well, humanized pony shit anyway.

I'm not worried at all about fucking anything up. It could be a learning experience. I don't see though how having more action in the composition makes it more likely to be fucked up though.

Longelf is long. Zoom out, get your proportions right, then do the clean lines. Everything is oddly stretched and her face looks flat and squared. It'll take some practice to tighten up your sense to wonky faces and body proportions. Work on just line art and forget the coloring for a while.

>>1852415

The bony face is making this look like "badly drawn anime". The bodies are absolutely fine. I really dig the style. But you need a new facial structure. Don't cheapen what you have by some dumb anime trope if you can't manage to master the subtleties that differentiate the "good anime" from the "terrible anime". Everything else about their bodies is rounder, so make their faces rounder. Draw like you're trying to make an anime Charlie Brown. Round the cheeks, give them a slight impression of a forehead, and you'll be onto something.

>>1852447

Finish your drawing before beating yourself up about it. I can't tell you what you need to do if I only see 1/4th of what you can do.

>>1852451

I second the hips thing, but you're damn close. Try giving your lines some color instead of black (dark orange for the hair, you know the drill.) and you can even do that stupid subtle color bloom everyone does to soften their image because it somehow magically makes your work seem that much more impressive. Can't link to any specific examples at the moment but I'm sure you've seen it before.

it reminds me of Galactic Breakdown. Very intentionally crude, I like it. The only thing is the last panel is made so hard to read, that I don't think many people will even want to spend the time to decipher it (even if it takes a couple of extra seconds). Even with the crude look, I think it would be helpful to have more definitive and set apart panels, because there's intentionally ugly, and then there's mindlessly ugly. Still, though that last panel is a little hard to decipher at first glance, it's pretty funny and it also is the most attractive because of the composition and the large amount of black.

I had to interact with two fandoms before understanding that you shouldn't feel the need to be part of a comunity to enjoy something or make fanart of it, you also shouldn't think of yourself as a "fan", it's like saying "i'm an otaku", it just directs retards towards you.
You just like the stuff and that's it, do your thing, draw what you want and people will naturally gravitate towards your work, no need to interact directly with the fandoms.

it seems like youre using the panel ruler thing right? i dont think that there is anti aliasing on that tool like you see with the brushes on other problems, where the edge is greyed out
its just black and white, binary, and that makes you have those jagged lines. the "other programs" you are talking about might have anti aliased lines then

It's hard to even look at it because you put black on a dark BG. The proportions are unattractive. Legs are thin and gangly (and they don't attach to the pelvis correctly). Neck, by contrast, is quite thick. The arms shouldn't taper at the joints like that - remember that muscles don't just sit along the length of a limb - they always cross over a joint. Hands are all finger, no palm. The fingers don't convey any sense of form - and obviously the hands are different sizes. Hard to tell if the pose makes sense without context, but unless he's on uneven ground, the straight leg should be weight-bearing, thus tilting the pelvis up on his left side (w/ the ribcage angling the opposite way to compensate). Hair looks flat, and doesn't seem sensitive to the shape of the head.
