I am seriously thinking about dropping out of college and trying to make a living drawing random people on the street. I know I sound like a hipster, but it is a childhood dream come true. In order to do that, I took some pictures of acquaintances and worked on portraits of each one of them, they all praised and said it was perfect, but they might as well be lying just for the sake of the friendship.
I'm here to ask you what you think.

You won't make a living from that. You just won't.

You could of course do this on your free time. Like dress up as some poor guy who does it for money and impress people on the street but for fucks sake get a real job.

Don't quit your day job. It's one thing praising free work from a friend. It's another for a stranger paying for it.

For one, doing portraits on the streets require you to be quick and not reliant on a photograph.

Realistically speaking, how much would you charge per piece? How long would it take you to complete one? How many commissions could you possibly get in a day? (Morning, nighttime, bad weather days removed.)

You'd probably make more dough doing some minimum wage job.

Keep doing the art, but don't starve for it.

You need to learn to draw gumlines. People's teeth don't just appear out of a skull, your teeth look horribly unnatural. You also need to work on eye and lip proportions, as they're off enough to make the picture look weird.

Buy some charcoal and work on shading as well, that's severely lacking.

Fuck that, if you think youll make it, fucking starve for it, all Monet ate for three days when he done caricatures was a potato and a few beans, but THAT worked out pretty well

Draw people from your school and PLEASE stay there.

We don't need any more uneducated artists in the world.

The real gauge of your skills are not the feedback from friends, but the feedback from people who don't care about you, especially from a personal level.

With that said, your stuff are beginner level. Start going to life drawing classes first and don't even entertain that idea of hitting the streets until five years later.

But Monet is Monet. And cameras weren't in common use in his time, so the only way people can get their portraits and "selfies" done was via an artist.

Besides, people today won't pay decent money for a crap portrait sketch. They should be paid for wasting their time as they could have taken out their cellphone and took their pictures themselves.

>> No.1821632

I'll try a constructive response. OP, your friends aren't lying to you - they think your drawings are good. And they are, insofar as they are the output of a beginner with enough talent for observation to do a decent photocopy. Drawing people in real life will require you to actually learn to draw, though, and the errors in your drawings betray that you have no such skill. Try going to a coffeeshop and draw portraits of the people you see (like you would on the street), and I guarantee they'll look like dogshit. Still, you clearly have talent and you can definitely develop into an artist, with practice.

I would strongly advice, rather than most people on 4chan said improve it alone, you should go to an art school for atleast part time studying

my experience told me it wasn't enough to study alone, you need someone besides you to point out places that just seems "off" but unexplainable,
the tutor can hold your hand or point at the spot to give you a more accurate guidance, god knows how many people on /ic/ are really good or just babbling things written on the sticky

>but they might as well be lying just for the sake of the friendship
you use the strong word lying as if they are a bunch of hypocrites. they care for you, even it isn't helpful. So I wouldn't use that

As some others have said, stay in school and keep doing art as a hobby. Your friends are more inclined to like your work because it's more personal and also because they aren't paying you for it. Trying to make a living as any kind of artist is difficult, let alone trying to make a living from doing portraits in a world with cameras. Doing art and going to school aren't mutually exclusive, so pursuing art is no excuse for dropping out.

And we shouldn't encourage any more than untalented hacks are encouraged today. It's because of hacks like those that real talent are treated the same way as they do.

>> No.1822125

Honestly a lot of caricature artists draw worse than this and make a living off of it. Depending on your speed it seems plausible.

>> No.1822131

That's because caricatures are often funny and appealing to look at. Meanwhile a portrait more grounded to realism will be prone to criticism.
