you might aswell reduce its size to 512x512 because that's the maximum size it will have for low poly. when you reduce the size you will probably stumble upon a bunch of issues with detail being too small or just not visible.

>> No.1812699

>>1812664
You'll need to develop a basic sense of colors at some point, even if 'painting isn't a priority'. It's important to becoming a more well rounded artist. Lot's of people can do really nice, tight line work, but it's the people who have a profound sense of color that really enjoy much more success. It's harder to do, and less people bother with properly understanding it.

Just as you have been practicing your faces, I really recommend you start practicing some colors. You have a lot to learn based off that example - and that's okay - just take it back to the basics. To start, remember that a darker value of a color is not necessarily a more black version of the same color.

Again - don't constrain yourself by just doing line work. I'm not seeing a whole lot of understanding of values either, so I think this might be a good point to start focusing on other fundamentals.

Good luck!

Might be that you're using too slow strokes to ink it. Hair especially tends to look best when done in quick, long, loose strokes, not short and neat ones.

Your colors look lifeless because, as >>1812699 mentioned, you're just using a darker version of the same color for shadows (and a lighter one for highlights) when in reality there would be nuances of colors from the surroundings in them.
I'm an ESL so I have a hard time explaining this well. It has to do with how light works, so I would recommend looking up a good tutorial on how light influences color.

That aside, it's also a good idea to think of a general color scheme for your picture before you start.

The lips aren't quite lined up with the center line, and look like they're being forced to the side of the face that the viewer sees. I think you need to take a little more care to show the lips from the underside, as they look more like they're level with the viewer when the rest of the head isn't (I think it's mainly the lower lip).

I'm thinking you intended to make the zygomatic arch more pronounced and protruding, but instead it looks like the front bottom of the zygomatic bone is severely underdeveloped and caved-in. Don't forget that you need to visually account for the muscles that attach to this bone from the underside that fills in the face.

as for criticism, on one hand I feel like your colors are too dull and could use more variation, but on the other I think it actually works on this piece as it creates a somewhat lifeless, desolate look that seems appropriate for an abandoned outpost (man this sounds kinda backhanded but I do mean it in a positive way)

Darken the background behind the snake dragon guy to make him pop. He gets lost in the lighter values.

The red lines on his wing and mountain behind him are causing too much focus because they're exactly parallel. Same thing with the snake dragon's wing and it's tail.
The mountain in the background shoots out at an irregular sharp angle and is right beside the end of it's tail causing even more unwanted focus.
Same can be said of the sharp angle on the middle left of the rock formation it's on.
The red on the bottom is not clearly defined. So figure something out with that.
And finally, the green marks are too straight of lines. Make them interesting by breaking the line and shape. Experiment with it's silhouette.

Don't take it out completely. You need a foreground element for scale and depth. Look at paintings from other artists and see what they did for a foreground element when the focal point was purely in the mid ground. It can be a number of things. Another story element, an inanimate object solely for composition's sake and leading the viewers eye to where it needs to go. Just make sure there's something covering that area or else the painting will lose a balance of weight and cause so much unwanted attention because it's just empty.

Haven't got a lot to criticise here if this is the level of detail you wish to settle on.

The legs could use a little retouch. The gap between the two seems a little wide, or at the very least the right thigh (from our perspective) looks far too thin underneath compared to the rest of the leg. So does his upper arm on the same side. Left foot also appears to be pointing too far down at the tip unless he's actually positioning on an uneven surface.

And the facial expression. He looks worried or confused about something totally unrelated to his current situation. Like he just remembered that he missed an appointment. Or that he's overcome with paranoia about contracting an STD. At the very least he doesn't appear to be gazing with purpose.

well then i put it to you that you should paint the background first, then the furthest away object, moving forward until you paint the closest.

not to a polished finish mind, but perhaps just a bit further than you have gone so far.

one object at a time. then at the end polish it all up, blending and such.

it's helpful to break a task down like that. i know many people including me would like to paint the whole painting at once but one 'color group' at a time is the usual and perhaps therefore smart way to go.

Use a bigger brush, and try to have it as opaque as possible for your block-in. Establish the color of the environment too. What color is the table and the wall? Those colors will interact with the objects on your table and shift hues around a bit. Try it out for yourself. Paint a white cue ball that's resting on a red surface. Now paint one that's resting on a green surface, then finally one resting on a black surface.

Anything that's perceivable and isn't jet black is a light source (it omits or reflects light into your eye). It thus acts as a light source for other objects that are nearby.

Well all I can offer about hair is to think of it as just one big mass, do not focus on showing individual strands.
Getting the dark, midtone and highlights down then adding some some strands here and there to give an illusion of hair, rather than doing strands individually which give the 'spaghetti hair' that is common in beginners.

I know there is a image macro floating around with more info but I don't have it, perhaps someone else could oblige.

The angle of the thumb. I dunno about you, but i've never seen a thumb that, when relaxed, sits a perfect right angle to the rest of the hand. I'm talking about both the angle AND the twist of the thumb, btw
The fingers are good though. Just watch that finger-webbing. It's sitting just a tad, tad, too low for my liking.
Even though it's minor, the webbing between the index and middle finger is usually the highest, or at leas on par with the middle webbing.

I really like this piece it is one of the most powerful works on sexuality in modern art

Clearly a metaphor for mans descent into reliance on cybersex, and reminiscent of Odysseus being drawn into Circe's hedonistic prison, The first two frames speak of power to the male who stands amongst his fantasy concubine who wait to please him.

From frame three onwards we see him become increasingly isolated, and his objects of lust become abstract, then pixellated, then ghostly, representing the transition from .jpg to smooth streaming video. He begins to look bored, even resistant in the penultimate frame. Perhaps he begins to realize his fantasy is not heaven but hell?

Finally, as man achieves full virtual simulation of sex, free from the emotion and obligation that women require, and the economics and logistical barriers to sexual fulfillment are finally destroyed, in a nietzschian twist has become a ghost himself, inside the machine, an object, nay a spirit of pure carnality

Found an old sketch page featuring a bunch of studies featuring light houses (from life) decided to touch one of them up. Need to clean up some shapes but it's very far in the process.

Keep forgetting how much it eases the process the along by having lines. I haven't had to retrace any steps so far.

Also everyone should try and paint a landscape featuring a cozy scene but at a dutch angle!

>>1812871
Most of the things that blend together into things that you can't discern are things I haven't resolved yet. The final painting may have a very different layout. Also it's very easy to glaze in colors in photoshop at later stages.

>>1813899
It is not a very hard style to imitate since it is basic brush work on top of forms and not much else. I would wish that you would spent more time considering your shapes, how they belong one into the other. Among the things you posted
>>1812782
is by far the strongest and would be very easy to take to a 'finish' not as in a conventional finish as in rendering every detail but rather are more careful arrangement of shapes and colors. Try and take a break from your pieces instead of posting them and then comming back to them a week later, see them with fresh eyes.

Gives you time to think and you avoid a lot of noodling

>>1813024
Shaddy safadi's technique lends itself well to very graphic rendering. Try to stylize the shapes even more than you already have. He goes on about the 'feeling//essence' of things with good intentions in mind. Copying the technique without applying more thought to your shapes will do you little good.

The placement of her eyes and the direction of her gaze has be believe that her head is tilted upwards and a bit to our left, but the lips are painted as if viewed from perfectly straight on.

Gesture study is also about proportions. If you get good gestures you can build anatomy on it. If you are good at anatomy and shit at gesture you get stiff stuff. But if you know nothing of anatomy you can't get proportions right and you don't contort the body right.

you can study both at the same time. First do a gesture of a ref. Then make a study of the forms on a new layer. In the form you will find the anatomy. Section big muscle groups or forms, and show the form with crossing lines. Gesture is feeling and understanding. Anatomy is knowledge and understanding.

No, all of your edges are smudgy and there is very little difference between sharp and smooth edges, It just all looks the same. The proportions of the character are far too over exaggerated, I understand this is a fantasy character and not all the rules of normal proportions should apply, but they still look far too stretched and comical, whether it is a fantasy character or not, you should still find a good balance, and make it look more realistic. Shapes and forms need a lot of work too, it just looks overall shapeless, give more volume to the clothing, make the bits of armor fit to the perspective, and so on. Also why is the swrord so weirdly curved? and the scabbard not? I like the overall design, but this needs a complete overhaul.

Most people tell you to do gestures first, but everyone sucks at them without knowing how an actual body looks like. It helped me A LOT studying anatomy and construction first, specifically Hampton, and only then add some motion and looseness to it.
Same thing as having to know fundamentals first before stylising, it's a lot easier knowing realism when simplifying and gestures require a lot of simplifying.

aaah, well, since it's manga fanart i did want to keep it vaguely anime. but i suppose it does kinda clash with the rest of the non-anime elements.
either way, i'm finished, but would love some crits for next time. i already know that i fucked up around the legs area, and it doesn't really seem like they're making eye contact..

Need thoughts on the monkey. I'm going to tweak the hand some more since it's not a total rip off (same with the colors)

I'd try and bring out the darker parts a bit more and maybe do a bit more detailing other then that the values and anatomy look good
