I wasn't one of those kids, but there's this weird-ass phenomena of six- to thirteen-year olds who are unnaturally obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog. I'm guessing it's probably because the Sonic series is extremely simplistic and overdone, the artstyle is fairly easy to copy, and that gives them a sort-of vent of expression.
I mean, I know of kids drawing canon Sonic characters since around the time the first few games came out. I guess some kids used to make up OC's, too, back then, and now DA is giving them a place to make their stuff public, free of criticism. People don't critique on DA because they either want to save face or don't realize it's bad in the first place, which is why they end up becoming shitty furry artists, normally.

I guess kids normally like animals or whatever when they're really young, then that evolves into Sonic anthros, and eventually into furries.

Sorry for the wall of text, yo, just my thoughts on it.

I was not into sonic but I was one of the kids you are thinking of. I was obsessed with pokemon and would constantly be drawing my self insert eevee interacting with the world the game's build for me. It was a creative outlet, I could put my emotions into this character and vent as much as I wanted to..which includes some embrassing teenage angst. I feel it's the same with sonic drawing people, they probably grew up with the games like I did with pokemon and grew attached to it, wanting to make themselves 'part of it' by making a fan character. That is just my two cents on it though.
