How do you feel about abstract art?

>> No.1793141

>>1793139
Be more specific. I really like the abex action painters and lyrical abstractionists, not much of a fan or minimalism, color field, or hard edge painting, with the exception of more expressive work like Frankenthaler's.

Abstract art can be very powerful and envoke extreme emotions like the very vibrant and real soulcrushing feeling of loss.

Impact of abstract art really depends on context, when I see it on tumblr, I just judge formal qualities, when it accompanies some other art like literature or music it is legit. But yeah rarely there is a piece that work as a standalone art piece

when did, for example, jackson pollock ever say his paintings were supposed to represent or mean something? there is no esoteric truth that the audience is supposed to "get", don't judge abstract art until you at least attempt to understand its goals.

man, even though i like to paint representational, i really love abstract art, its like how a picture should work at its essence, if you made the figurative non figurative. Id like to think that figurative images should work on the abstract level to be truly great, so when you boil all shapes down to their essence you still have something pleasing, a fine arrangement of color shapes. Abstract for me is the moment when you paint, where you still have a choice in what to do with the image, the stage where imagination can be allowed to reign freely! its a good exercise to create an abstract image that works, and then make things figurative from there on. Thats the approach mullins used from time to time in his personal stuff, looking for images in the abstract, sorting through combinations of shapes and colors.

Heres something i made, if it where to be boiled down it would just be triangles pointing down into a warm circular shape, thats how i like to think of it! trying to entertain the eye in texture, light, shapes, thats the essence of images. (of course im still a noob though!)

I only like abstract art that is technically good and not just a bunch of scribbles. Because of its minimalist nature, colour is much more important, so the colours MUST harmonise nicely.
I've learnt quite a lot from Josef Albers' paintings, when it comes to colours (picture relevant).
