It derives its meaning from its color, forms, composition, etc. without trying to represent some real thing. Think of it as: a representational artwork is like a sad song with sad lyrics; a non-representational artwork is like a sad instrumental song--no concrete words or anything, but you can still tell it's sad by the way it sounds. not quite m8. this is a snapshot of mondrian in his transition into abstraction, but there are still a few signs of figuration in the painting (the four thick vertical lines and the two diagonal lines toward the bottom of the painting). iirc this was painted during his time in paris, a representation of the view - of neighbouring roofs, windows & balconies - from his apartment

he didn't go full abstract till a few years later

Wut. Sargent was known to never rush stuff, and he also was a very highly paid artist throughout his career. The only "questionable" thing in that painting is the hand, which is a bit large and doesn't read as well as his hands usually do, but I see nothing else in that painting that implies it isn't his usual quality.

>> No.1791107

generally his finish is like twice as good as that. i was joking about rushing really, but now that i think about it it may be true.

he was known to take a long time. not that he didn't rush. if you take a long time doing something perhaps you get caught short occasionally.

and of course he was highly paid, that's the crux of the joke. i was implying he was a moneylovin' hack and that he would rush/not finish a painting if the money didn't show up.

This board is for work that can be critiqued. Art on such an abstracted level like that or minimalism simply cannot be critiqued because it can't be "wrong". That's why shit work like that isn't accepted here, and is also why this board isn't full with your typical wanky art crowd.

Abstract art requires great skill, fair enough you don't understand or appreciate it bro, but to come out with such a negative approach to art like that is just wrong

WOW, that is one fuckin spooky lookin horse, man. I liked that what I noticed first was the nostrils, there seems to be some kind of focus there with how well it's defined. Then I was like wait, that's not the eyes, that's the - whoa! Seeing that big, black, crazy eye made me stop breathing for a split second. I love this kinda raw power. Even though I'm very uncomfortable looking at the image now, I have to save it.

You have to see this piece in person in order to truly appreciate it.

If you just pass it by it looks like a black square but when you stare at it you actually see that there is a red and green cross with blue corners.

Reinhardt made these paintings as a commentary about how people take art for granted.

Then again, they're not everyone's cup of tea
