Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1775590

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Anyone knowledgable on manga / anime styles, what would the style used by JJFrenchie in this >>1780656 thread be called? Not the futa subject matter, but the actual style of fairly realistic but still clearly stylised. Any artists known to use a similar style?

>> No.1782170

>>1782146
it doesn't have a name. it also isn't fairly realistic, it's just a touch less symbolic than manga. it looks really french, manga was a big influence in france but they also had a strong and fun history of their own with comics, stuff like asterix and obelix, tin tin etc.

not saying it is french, but that's what it looks like so you could probably find more by looking at some french artists.

Grr. I wouldn't call his subject matter Futa. To me it means females with a vagina and a dick. He's drawing Traps, boys/men with breasts but no vagina.

That being said, he's got a very nice style, tending to favor the more anime looking stuff to his more naturalistic big lipped stuff.

You can call it a European Manga style since that's what it looks like. Vatine has some nice stuff. Look for a scan of Pink Planet if you can find it. And then there's Wakfu.

You make me feel good about my chicken scratch.

Speaking of chicken scratch how the hell do I get rid of it? People say to draw with your arm but it's so uncomfortable for me, especially when trying to make bold lines for the final lineart (at least on paper)

>> No.1782310

>>1782303
its not so much about how you draw but about the line.

a line is a statement. so if it were conversation say, chicken scratch is like a stutter, 'he -hel -ell- lo' while a single line is like a nice bold word, 'hello!'

that's why it looks bad, you aren't being clear. so the thing to do is make sure you know what your want your line to say before you say(draw) it.

normally slowing down and thinking before you draw the line is enough. but 'ghosting the line' ..going over the line a few times before you actually draw it on the paper is a common way for being sure about your 'statement' before you make it. you see vilppu and the like doing that all the time, basically subconsciously.

it'd also probably be good to watch something on inking where they tend to explain the parts of the line, the bleeds and such quite well. knowing about what makes a line should make it easier, if only because you can't chicken scratch bleeds.

I draw a lot, but I only draw from life. I haven't drawn cartoons or my own characters because they look so shitty I give up and leave it alone.

I think you're right though, I need to practice cartooning.

>> No.1782315

>>1782303
heh, that's just the layout. Pencils will be much tighter.

Yes, to get more fluid, longer lines it's better to draw using your elbow or shoulder as the pivot point. An exercise we did in Life Drawing class was to draw a series of parallel lines vertically and horizontal, trying to keep them as straight and parallel as possible in one stroke (didn't have to be fast, just consistent). Another exercise had us drawing circles on the page of different sizes. You could either swirl your arm around, overlapping lines to achieve roundness, or attempt to do them in a single stroke.

>>1782310
Agree with the "ghosting." It's akin to a golfer taking practice swings. I do have a habit of doing double lines, putting down a definite stroke, then following up with a bit of emphasis where I want. It works for me, but YMMV.

>> No.1782316

>>1782315
Oh, I guess I should have mentioned we were doing these exercises on 18x24" sketch pads, so it required us to use the whole arm. Doing the same on a sheet of copy or notebook paper should do just as well though.

Still seems a bit stumpy. I think what's flattening out the chest is that the horizontal lines you're making should be curving upward instead of downward. Since it seems that the camera is down by the feet, the breasts should curve upward on the form of the chest.

You're thinking of the forms as 2D patterns rather than 3D objects.

Auditory, Visual, Reading and most importantly hands on practice through repetition is how we learn; if reading up on the material doesn't work try a visual aid or watch a video and listen to the instructor explaining perspective. Participate.

Well, how I sketch probably won't help you much. I do have a test video I did a while ago.

http://youtu.be/weZCPcEu1TE

What advice I can give you is when drawing, think about the human body (or any object) in a three dimensional way. For example, the shape of a rib cage can look roundish from a front view, but more elliptical from a side view.

Knowledge of how the muscles cover the skeleton and interact with each other will help you in creating the forms of the arms, legs, hands and fingers. For example, a woman's (or man's--not judging) calf will look different in a high heel stilleto than it would wearing flip-flops. These are the things I generally think about when drawing figures. The same thing will apply to drawing animals or any creature with a skeleton. They all have some sort of physicality going on under the skin that creates its forms.

Hope this helps.

In the case of the video I'm just sketching in the sketchbook doodling figures. So generally I start off with a head and expression and see where it goes from there.

If I'm doing comic work or a piece with an environment I'll first think of where I want to place the characters in panel and work in a space around them at the same time. I also try to leave space for word balloon placement.

some of my "work" i did for a /v/ drawthread.
im going to need 1000 yrs of "learn the basics", stat!

i've been at this for 4 years. i can't practice, i get too bored doing the same thing over and over and I feel like im accomplishing nothing. so if I do watch a video or read something, I try to apply what I learn and take my time drawing. I think I spent over an hour on this. There is nothing you can fix except tossing it in the trash and starting over would be faster.

probably shouldn't bother with styling shit, but I figure everyone gets to that point early on and wants to draw things in a style they like because that is why they started drawing in the first place, ya know?

I like the designs, never did watch all of the show. The OAV with the bath/palace place was nice.

>>1782810
The video was done on the UX21 Cintiq and was sped up 8x. I think of the hatching in 2 ways, 1) using it as a texture and as an indicator of volume and form, and 2) filling in spots that I would like to blacken in when inking. Both I lay down with intent. Many a HS student just throw in hatching just to quickly fill the space. But if you lay it down with a distinct intent, it will look more "professional".

I also try for an even tone, if I were penciling this traditionally, I'd be holding the pencil at a shallower angle using more of the lead surface to cover the area. But it's all about intentionally putting down your lines, whether it's shading or contours.

Yes, the term tablet is becoming blurry. Tablets can be anything from the traditional Wacom tablet on the desk, to the Cintiq (a Monitor Tablet? Tablet Monitor? Screen Tablet?), to a Tablet PC, like the Surface Pro 2 I'm currently using.

I, for one, have never gotten use to drawing on a traditional tablet, the hand/eye disconnect was too great for me to use it as a sketching tool. It took the Cintiq and Tablet PCs for me to make the jump. But even then, you still have to be aware that you're moving a cursor around on the screen and not think that you're actually drawing on the glass.

I was in the last thread trying to draw a girl I know. After comparing my drawing to the references I used, it was obvious that I missed the point. Now I've started a new drawing and I think it already looks better than the old one. Proportions are really messed up. Torso is way too far from legs, neck is too long, and upperarms way too long. Forearms are not foreshortened properly and look blobby. One hand looks alright while another looks bloated. It seems like you are relying too hard a few different references to the line, and when put together falls apart.

>>1783094
But for months the majority of the responses ARE jealous highschool-hambeast-tier snide remarks that lack any real point or substance (also trying to act like they speak for everyone/popular opinion) . These threads for the past year has suffered from "tall poppy" syndrome something fierce.

Better with the form of the chest, however the torso you're trying to twist the opposite way, which can be done, but the legs are still at a straight on view. I'd say moving on to a fresh pose instead of running over the same one.

Once you get more knowledge of anatomy, gestures like these will come easier.

for the most part you did nicely including the gestures and general proportions, but a bit more detailing can be desirable to get the audience (in this case my dick) going though i dont know how much muscular detail can be logical for furries. breasts need to be really soft since they are basically bags of fat and are not connected to muscle. because of that, they kinda show separation from muscle through the skin in the form of creases. hell, even buff dudes have creases in different parts of muscle. you have to make it subtle to seem like fine folds but obvious enough that you can notice it on the get go rather than connecting them to the pectorals and then to the shoulder muscle.

remember, bags of fat so sag and crease em up but dont overdo it. unless.. you know, you're into granny tits.

Look for artist that inspire you or you think are fucking cool.
Listen to the music that you love or find some catchy ass music to keep your mind from drifting off.
Try drawing with friends.
Try to draw "something" can just be squiggle lines or just doodles, it can be a page filled with dicks, as long as you draw something it'll help get out of that "artblock/lazyness"
Bottom line, draw something, ANYTHING...

Lastly
Watch something inspiring or motivating:

Right now the first thing that sticks out to me is how the hat is resting on her head. It either has to be floating, which noting about it really indicates that it does that, or she has a massive mound of hair under it or a freakishly deformed head.

The second thing that stands out is the legs, which I think you may have over exaggerated the positioning of to the point of almost dislocation. She also doesn't particularly feel as if she is actually standing or placing any degree of weight on them.

Serious question, not trying to be shitty or sarcastic or anything:

Why does there seem to be so little overlap between CGL's artist alley threads and these alternative art/stylization threads? They have a lot of common ground. The art in artist alley is often a similar style to the art in these threads (anime inspired, etc)

On the CGL board, there are occasionally "AA threads" in which folks (mostly people who table at AA's) commiserate over the ins and outs of business, art techniques, art crit, etc. It never gets too in depth in any of those subjects, though. There isn't a thread up now, but a new one is made 1-2 times a month. It usually lasts for a few days to 2 weeks.

Sorry I'll try to explain a little more to make up for it.

Not much to say about the first deform just more fitting proportions. I'd advise zooming out and/or flipping the canvas when working. Also there's nothing wrong with exaggerated proportions, but I'd say that it was not properly executed. It feels like "Legs are cool I'll just draw them bigger", which is kind of correct but ignoring everything else was jarring in this case. Hips or ass would likely be something else to also accentuate. A better understanding of anatomy will help.

The second deform attempts to show the effect of perspective where things closer to the viewer is larger and things further away is smaller. This allows you to still have a really big leg because it's closer to the viewer just make sure everything else is in proper perspective.

the only time when legs get fat as fuck are if they're right up against the viewer's face (foreshortening/extreme perspective) or the character is designed to have giant fucking legs. (stylization)

The thing with warping the proportions so crazily on a figure with everything a typical chick with tits would have is that people will look at it and ask you what the fuck's wrong with it, when they should really be focusing on the character's design.

what >>1785960 is talking about is my first point, this whole thing with the body being made of basic shapes and if its turned one way you see less of the other side

tldr have decent proportions of shit'll get fucked. extreme perspective is weird.

generally speaking: all the crap you can read on every post here. observe and draw what you see not what you think. read the sticky.

a few things you should keep in mind while looking at some photo reference / life: the eyes are not stickers on a perfectly round head
there are sockets in the skull -> the eyes sit inside the head
the eyeballs themselves are spheres
eyes are almost never fully open i.e. the upper and lower eyelids can be seen following the form of the ( spherical ) eyeball

but yeah just look at reference and try to understand the subject

The highlight for the nose just seems weird. It should either be on the tip with the redness, or removed. It gives me the impression she's got a mosquito bite on the bridge of her nose.
