That's exactly why I'm asking, I'm on the same boat. I'm doing what it says and I can get what's being written, but I'm so uncertain and confused about each new thing, I don't know what I'm doing at all.

I'll repost my question from last thread.

What's a good book with exercises to try?

I've read a bunch of books about art, but I barely get a chance to try drawing shit and I'm really behind on it.

I've been drawing crap for too long and I just recently got a critique that gave me a reality check about it, mentioning how my drawings lack any formal foundations and that I should try re-learning anatomy again.
Before that I used to study Loomis' plates while I drew, but it only helped me to keep bare proportions right, without understanding the anatomy behind it.

Any ideas?

TL;DR: my drawings are shit, must go back to fundamentals, but i need a book with exercises and not so much on theory.

Even if I'm a begginer, I want to draw EVERYTHING. Cars, aircrafts etc using perspective, people, faces, fucking proportions, then environments. Also, I want to master coloring and maybe one day, stylization. I know a little about each subject, even if I'm bad at it I just need to study. My problem is, I don't know how start and how organize my time for that. What would you recommend? How I make an efficent schedule? I know it will take time until my work start to look good. If I just focus in one subject I'll feel like I'm not doing enough, even if I draw 12 hours everyday.

Oh, and another thing. I own a "gaming" pc and a notebook for drawing. My pc stays on the table and the notebook is always changing location, I have no place for it in my bedroom. But there's an empty room which I could use for drawing. The problem is, I can't get out of my comfort zone, I don't feel like taking my notebook and going to another room, since my bedroom is so comfortable. Do you thing setting a bed on the empty room would make me stay there more often?

Sorry if it was a long text, I need to improve fast. 22 of July I'm entering in a "contest".

Yes that's the book. It's not actually a course in itself, it is just a series of images you copy out ranging from simple to very complex, and they have breakdowns of the approach you can take shown with it.

It originally was designed as handouts that teachers could give to students for homework, but in recent years the approach has shifted and people slavishly copy out the diagrams over the course of weeks or months, which results in them completing maybe 2-4 plates instead of most of the course.

The approach is taught in many ateliers, and the book covers some of the approach and includes the Bargue plates. The goal is to refine students' observational skills from life, and to instill some sense of classical aesthetics among other things.

Copying the plates are a good exercise to bring up your observational skills, but it isn't necessary to spend 50 hours on a plate as you'll hear a lot from places. From what I've heard, Bargue's students would have done all of the plates as homework, and as such it's impossible to spend 50 hours on each plate [don't have a source though].

that's one method, nathan fowkes does it all the time

conversely you can just use all gouache. try both out see what you prefer

watercolour + white gouache is perhaps the more classical/academic approach because you normally work from dark to light and from thin to thick paint. when working with gouache, you paint thicker and when painting with watercolour you paint thinner

even with retarder it's still hard.putting retarder in acrylic paint doesn't change it into oil paint. there are many reasons why it's so hard. the colours don't mix well, so you have to do it in steps, which takes forever. or in layers which takes forever and ever. colours don't mix like digital paint so unless you're pretty experienced you'll mix it down all icky.

Hey guys, got a few questions for ya.

1) Tablet Position: Bamboo Splash (pic related).
I have been using it for a little under a year and it works perfect for me and my skill level (beginner/hobbyist/casual, etc). My question though, since I have been using it more and more lately (almost 3 to 4 hours a day now) should I try to dock it into an angled position while I'm using it? Will this be better for my hand/wrist in the long run? I'm comfortable either way but I was curious.

2) Tablet Life: Bamboo Splash (pic related).
Should I keep my tablet plugged in while it is not in use? I know these models are considered cheap to a lot of people, I've even been told I should replace it with a more advanced model but honestly it's perfect for me. I just want to make sure it will last as long as possible.

3) SketchBook Pro v 6.2 (pic unrelated).
I am under the impression that this software is the absolute best. I fell in love with SketchBook Express (which was one of two software programs bundled with my Bamboo Splash at the time) and I was wondering if any of you who may also run the software had a custom made brush you wouldn't mind sharing or know where I could find some. I have tried making my own and I haven't been 100% satisfied just yet.

Sorry if the post is a little long, thanks ahead of time if you answer and I've tabbed out and here's a preemptive fuck you to the assholes.

All I can say is pay attention to balance, weight distribution, squashing forms, tension and relaxation, etc. Bridgman is good at showing weight. I'd look into the Human Machine, and Constructive Anatomy. I think Vilppu also does a pretty good job of showing weight IIRC.

There were some posts about coloring comics on Muddy Colors, but upon looking at them it looks like they only talk about coloring digitally.

Your best bet is to do some research into comic colorists that you admire in the industry. You might have to dig back in time to find ones that have worked traditionally. Once you have a name, try to find a blog/site/deviantart. People in the industry get asked questions about materials and process so many times that they often make a detailed post about it. I know I've seen a few examples that dealt with inking comics in the past, but I don't know of any that deal with traditional coloring.

This is only speculation, but if you're using paper that can hold onto watercolors, you could try using watercolor over the pencil lineart, then inking once everything is dry.

Photoshop or Lightroom might have some functionality like that, but it's imperfect compared to just taking the photo properly to begin with. Getting a tripod is a lot cheaper and more reliable.

Trying to do a software fix, you're essentially using a program to take a best guess at what the original would look like if you correct for motion blur. The only information it has to work with is the blurred photo. The only way to get perfect information to begin with is at the source, not through editing the source.

I'm not 100% it will work, but it's worth experimenting. Get a test page of paper that will hold watercolors, slap some paint on, let it dry, then see how inking feels. What are some good exercises for drawing?
I've started drawing "seriously" I dunno around April or May and this is all I can really muster up.

Time is really no problem for me as I've got no job and all I really do is waste it by playing games, going to the gym, or go on /v/.
So what kind of daily exercises should I do to improve? I can't really draw objects nor people.

You're drawing with someone's else "handwriting". Go back to the basics, do figure studies with charcoal (trust me, even if you want to use a pencil, you can learn more with charcoal) and draw -what you see-, not what you think you see.

I dunno what to recommend you, Vilppu or Loomis may be good starters, but I prefer not recommending authors that I haven't studied completely.

You don't have too many problems with your lines (no chicken scratches), but they're boring. I can tell that you have some ideas that you want to make, how about you try drawing them and get criticized? (after practicing human figure)
Post in the beginner thread and stylization general, they can give you critique on your work . Keep drawing, get criticized. work some more.

Your practice by painting still lifes. In fact, when working on your fundamentals, still lifes are often recommended. Your question doesn't make much sense from that viewpoint.

What you should be doing is tailoring your still lifes to focus on what you're weakest at in terms of fundamentals, but aim for the more basal skills first.

>not as accurate as drawing every single hair
Nobody draws every single hair. That always looks bad.

Just simplify the eyebrow into value shapes (you need to observe a model for this). Paint those shapes with the correct value, and the correct edges all the way around. If you make the edges too hard, or the value too dark, or the value too uniform, it won't look convincing. Just look up the myriad of excellent portrait painters out there and copy what they do. There's already a lot of simplification involved, but you could then simplify even further to suit your needs.

I'm also working under the assumption that you're depicting the form of the top of the eye socket correctly. If not that could be causing you some problems.

Just start wherever. You learn by doing - don't stress what you can't do yet because no matter where you start it will be hard and it will look like shit.

If you want to get super theoretical and go in order of developing skills:
1. Line control. Watch this video and do the entire homework assignment exactly as instructed. No skipping shit. If your results are bad, do it all again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

2. Value scale exercises. Like this here:
>>1772903

3. Shape copying. Learning to see and copy shapes and lines accurately. Books like Drawing Made Easy help get you started. Copying Bargue plates (read the book to learn the proper approach) is the most difficult but optimal. Once you can apply those principals to photos and still lifes, then chances are you can observe accurately.

4. Perspective and basic forms. Perspective Made Easy is a good start

5. Constructing complex forms from basic forms

6. For figure drawing, this is where you can start with things like Vilppu. Technically gesture can be learned before perspective and forms, but I find it easier to understand gestures in 3D space if I already understand 3D space. The rest of his book tackles handling the figure in a logical order, so I won't repeat it here.

A lot of people will tell you different things about what they'd do differently. In general it can be summarized as 'more targeted learning', and more drawing from imagination.

Targeted learning meaning to address your weak areas, but with a focus on the more basal skills first. Like for example you'd want to learn the major masses of the body before worrying about individual muscles, or you'd want to learn value before learning about color.

Drawing from imagination can be used as a tool to see what you know, and to develop your creative skills, and to reinforce what you just learned in a study. If you do a study and don't immediately try to apply it somewhere else, you won't retain as much. In that line of thought it can also be helpful to take notes on your studies as you learn. What worked, what didn't, and why?

In short, apply yourself, think critically with everything you do, and stay out of your comfort zone. As long as those are in place you will see improvement.

>how much is overcharging?
More than people will pay.
>how much is undercharging?
Less than people will pay.

Keep in mind sometimes people avoid buying something because the price is too low. Like a low price will indicate that the product is worthless. It's not just an art thing. I know people who sell PDFs of books and things, and they'll get more downloads if they charge a dollar than if the book is free. People are weird.

>> No.1783289

>>1783282
no.

overcharging is when the benefit of charging more per unit is overcome by the loss of demand caused by the unit price being too high for the consumers. unless you are selling a 'prestige product' and you think overcharging will in fact increase demand. usually you do that for something with a high production cost which limits the amount of units you can produce, cognac being an example.

so,

if you sell 100 pictures or w.e. at $5 you make $500
but if you could of sold 50 pictures for $20 you would make $1000.

so even if your charging more than what half of your consumer base would pay you still make more money.

now for a prestige product you might sell 2 pictures at idk $400 which would be less than if you sold at $20 but the production cost is lower. but even if you decided to sell at $400 you need better production and that costs a ton more if you become established you might end up selling 10 pictures at $400 next time and so on. it's a bit of a gamble.

undercharging is the opposite, where you could maybe sell 400 pictures for $1 and get $400 but that's less than you could of made and might barely pay for the production costs.

you can also create demand easily by lowering the price.

so at first charge what you think is way too much. if you don't make enough money lower the cost, you might get a bump in sales and you will probably make more overall.

so start by charging 50% over production cost, which if you live in your parents house and don't pay bills and stuff is just your salary which should probably be somewhere around minimum wage if your not uber confident in your stuff.

this all assumes there is some demand of course :p

Its not necessary. it just plays a part in learning how to draw the human figure, /ic/ generally recommends to read books (Loomis, Vilppu, Hampton etc) and draw from photo reference and life to improve your people-drawing ability.

If you just copy nudes all day you won't learn shit.

As for gesture drawing, it doesn't. Its not some magical fix-all drill, its for keeping energy and movement in your drawing, mostly in regards to poses.

Not him, but I was wondering what is a good way to practice gesture drawing?

Go on some figure drawing website and set the timed poses to something like 5minutes, take your time and carefully analyze what the motion shown is like, and try replicate that in an abstract way. If it makes sense to you then its fine, click to the next photo and continue. Don't go for super duper quick 30 seconds poses all the time.

>>what is a good way to get out of this habit?
Uh, tell yourself not to? Maybe try poses which aren't flat, forcing you to build it up with forms. Practice constructing smaller simpler objects if you can't handle humans yet.

I've heard of a lot of people that don't listen to anything during the more mentally rigorous parts of picture making, and then listen to music/watch tv while doing the mundane rendering and polishing.

Try drawing with music and without. Try lots of different types of music. Do you in general draw better under certain conditions? If so, keep drawing under those conditions.

If you see a problem, fix it. The sooner you fix it the better. You don't produce good work or learn anything by ignoring your mistakes. At the same time, you shouldn't be trying to make something that's absolutely perfect in every regard if it keeps you from working on many pieces. So you mean a rotated object, not a diagonal object. As a box rotates, it's vanishing points move along the horizon. 2pt perspective works for objects aligned to a grid. Any object that isn't aligned with this grid has it's own unique vanishing points.

If you locate the station point from the first box, any pair of vanishing points will meet the station point at a right angle. Using your original station point as a guide, you can find the two new vanishing points for your rotated object accurately, without running the risk of inaccurate lens distortion.

If this doesn't make too much sense, take another read of Perspective Made Easy. Early on he covers the station point and how rotating a box moves the vanishing points.

Yes, if you only practice drawing 1 thing. The odds of this happening are higher if you don't know how to construct forms and extract useful information from references.

For the most part, a good artist should be able to draw anything he/she hasn't drawn before if provided with what that thing looks like from a front/side/top/bottom/back view. The rules for perspective and constructive form don't change.

I would recommend the books Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson and Rapid Viz, they're loaded with exercises to help you not only draw what you see but to be able to visualize things in space. I would move on to Loomis, Hampton, Hogarth and Vilppu books once you can grasp these concepts.

Mojo..hmm. Well, we all have our own mojo coming from habit and schedule. Try drawing everyday first, don't worry about making good drawings or practicing, just have fun. Once you can draw everyday(consistently) for considerable amounts of time, then you can start being hard on yourself with how you spend your time. Another thing is to leave the drawing board when you still want to be there...so that you want to come back to it.

So whenever I'm out of the habit, I just make a small decision to draw everyday for even a small amount of time. It just becomes like brushing your teeth, then. Then once I can do this for a few days, or when I am ready or desire it, I start to learn and work on improvement.

Besides my own momentum keeping me going forward, being around other people(across the internet of course) practicing art keeps me going. Also, people like Android Jones and Craig Mullins that have been dedicated to their art over long periods of time inspire me as well.

I love mixed media. I've tried stenciling flamable fluids on wood, and setting it on fire. There was a vague dark shape, but not enough to make out any figure. I also tried covering one layer of a multi-layered stencil with flammable fluid, so that the blue part of a stencil got sorched. The effect was nice.

There's also the effect of spraypaint on sand-paper, where the spayed parts lose texture and the unsprayed parts don't, and on that white light bubbly isolation material, in which case the spray paint eats through the white material. The effect is nice, and works great with rough single-layer works.

There's also the thing with sprayable glue and various powders.

I'll try to explore more with mixed media, thanks bro.

Would you recommend building up some skill on paper and then moving on to digital art or just going digital straight away?

When is it a good time to start painting? I've been working on learning how to draw for the past few months and gone through loomis, Hampton, and some villpu but haven't done any painting. I wanted to know if it's a good time to start learning value and color. Also where is a good place to get started with painting (digital)?
