Do you think comfort in ones own handwriting is essential to comfort in ones own drawing, and as a result painting? theres no art you make more personal than your handwriting so what's to say the key to becoming a great artist is writing constantly. Many great artists wrote thousands of letters, such as Monet and van Gogh.

When I think of great drawings ( and i usually think of the impressionists and renaissance artists) they look almost as if they are written instead of drawn.

I wonder. I have beautiful handwriting when I focus, but usually I scrawl illegible chickenscratch. I think if you have learned the art of handwriting/calligraphy then some of that skill will transfer to line confidence in pen drawings.
