Good start but try rotating your canvas with the original reference occasionally! Working from different angles should allow you to more easily identify any proportion and balance issues. Also try working with brighter colors. The original piece has lots of yellows and reds. Not as many blues/greens as you've got.

Not him, but yes. Drawing is the single most important fundamental skill to learn. I don't agree that you have to draw _extremely_ well, before you start exercising painting, but until you are at the very least decent at it, drawing should be your highest priority, before anything else.

A painting will never look good if you can't draw and you will never learn anything valuable from painting studies if you can't even do a simple, yet accurate drawing first.

Hello /ic/,

first time poster since '07 or something. Anyways i thought this thread might suit my question also.

I've been going through this world in my mind, related to the pic. I don't know how much people here go out, but you might have seen those "islands" on swamps and fields. Those are in my eyes somehow really mystical and hard to reach, so i've been creating this story around it. What kind of animal-like creatures would you see walking around with these islands on them? I'm trying to find some rough, yet friendly form for it - not any hippo type or such, im trying to find a solution that also suits scandinavian scenery.

I've been lately working on birds too, so I see a connection with these animals and setups. So, any critique/feedback?

Update on a shirt illustration from a few draw threads back. Thought I'd share the progress. I'm going to get rid of the words "Super Metroid" though, since you need a Nintendo license to sell anything with game titles on it. I'm considering writing something simple instead, like "Kraid" or "Brinstar", or maybe just getting rid of the text altogether.

Thoughts?

while the cave itself and characters look ok, the main interest of the scribble, the tower, or whatever it is is pretty underwhelming. Considering the perspective and the distance, you're suggesting that the tower is about... 5-6 floors high. Or those windows are huge as fuck. Perspective is pretty fucked. Then again, it looks as if it was made out of concrete slabs put together in a hurry. Think about this: the thing that built the tower was in an empty cave. It is in need of a tower. It won't try to haul foreign materials to the scene, it'll use what's lying around, stones and... well stones. They're around. And when something is made from tiny little bits (like stones) it's easier to make it round (unless the creator wanted it to be a ... hexagon, right?). If it's made out of some enchanted material show it. A different color on the edges or whatever. A hasty sketch is ok, but you want to keep your players focused on something. They are not going to look at a speed sketch in awe for 20 minutes to see if you got their equipment right. Still, they'd like to see something cool ahead of them.

Not bad anon. A few pointers:
-soften face more, harden edges on hair and shirt
-make sure the nose is in the right perspective,
-watch you dont go too dark on hte neck shadow
-control your values more, there are many value jumps in the face
-glazing a saturated orange-red over the eyelids, lips, ear, and nose will help bring some life to this
-the bg look weird when the lefthand side is light and the right is dark.

You have to stop thinking of the hair as individual pieces and focus on it as a mass instead. The little hairs you drew make it look really fake and fuzzy and it doesn't fit the rest of it at all. That and you could use a lot of practice with defining more and avoiding the blur tool. Rely more on your brushes and colors to blend, they will thank you for it.

Hey /ic/, have you seen how some big humanoid monsters have a little circle/square shaped head contrasting with their huge body? well, I want your opinion on pic related. I'm trying to make something like that, but the head/mask/skull/whatever has these horns or something like that going backwards. Is this a good design choice? or a good design in general? I'm kinda liking, it but I fear I'm just getting used to it and instead I'm making shit by trying new approaches to generic designs. I'm kinda new in this whole creature design stuff, but I'm trying to make a final illustration with this design.

Also, sorry I can't upload the actual sketches I did in paper, but I quickly did this silouette in Krita and I hope it's accurate enough to show you my idea. Any design suggestion is highly appreciated.

What's with her nose?

You should be aware that there are multiple lightsources. A diffused, ambient lighting from the environment in a dawn/sunset setting, and direct light from the train. Consider the type of source, and how it affects the figure. Also, some soft bounce light opposite from the diffused environment light might give her a bit more volume, but this is just my opinion. See what suits the illustration best.

Also be aware at the train tracks. It's weird to see nothing between the girl and the tracks. There's usually some things in between there, like additional tracks, track sleepers and general track related stuff.

Also, try experimenting with cooler shadows on her, and see how it goes.

Start doing spheres & cubes & stuff like that. Rinse & repeat till comfortable. Then sort of box out out the planes of figure and shade them accordingly. Rinse & repeat until the boxed out forms start to look proper. Then observe edges (soft, hard or lost) & reproduce them. Also do simplify. Boxing out is basically simplifying. Also check out Proko's vids regarding this shit.

>>1766501
>you can use airbrush all you want if you know how to use it and I'm trying to learn
Exactly, if you know how to use them. Right now it's too much blended which makes it look too smooth & also looses structure. Plastic lighting is when you paint skin in such a way that it looks like plastic. There's a whole lotta shit to painting skin. Like Sub Surface Scattering and saturation control and lotsa more. See some master paintings & then see what you have done. You might think it's different for coz of the airbrushing, but it's not.How do I know? Coz I've been doing plastic lighting myself, & trying to get away from it now.

It will help you alot to turn the image you're studying from into grayscale and compare values. Saturated doesn't mean dark value althoug it looks.
Other thing is to do a structure FIRST. Structuring is crucial! You'll just spend alot of time correcting errors and guessing if you don't do a solid pencil structure underneath, compare it to the imagem to make sure it's right and then move onto painting.

Quick tip for value studies for beginners : Don't paint your subject on a pure white background. To learn about value is to be aware of the value relationship of the subject in relation of their surroundings.

Try to at least block out the background first, then the subject.

When you start a certain shape, how do you get all the values you need on it? Do you start with your darkest, then use the eyedropper tool on the edges and paint over with a slightly lighter value and repeat until you get the desired scale?

I use a method originated from renassaince artists like DaVinci, which is to paint the whole picture a neutral color like 50%gray or sepia and then use white and black to build value. You will have ALOT more volume to work with this way, instead of working directly onto white which is much harder.

Through personal observation, and from Sargent's notes, for me I find it best to work for the midtone of the subject first. Depending on the light setting, it might be the local value, but try to look for the mid value in relation to all the level of value on the subject.

Then, build up your values from basic 3 values, like dark + mid + light, and then add more and introduce more in between values as you go.

While studying, keep in mind the light sources that are present in the photo, how it affects the subject's form.

Refer to pic attached when you study, and understand it, why light and shadow appears as they are in your reference. If you could understand it, then you will be able to improve in the value dept. much faster, and your personal pieces will be much more stronger.

Bonus : You can also learn about edges. Edges can be pretty subjective in painting, and may be up to the artist on how to use them, but the constants are usually this. Form shadows has soft edges, and cast shadows have hard edges. Lost edges can be made in really low contrast areas, and high contrast areas can bring in hard edges.

Read, study, learn, and apply.

I like your style and way you made the shades with different lines and dots. But the style and anatomy breaks easily, when you're trying too hard. Weight is too much on the hands and middle part is too stuffed. Weight seems to be so much on the left, it makes it look off-balanced. I think you should put less weight on the outline and make it more alive. Leave it totally out from the high points. Also try to bring that shading into feature more than pattern, less would make it more interesting.

You did really well on the shoulders and neck, back of the head made me really think. Though chest is totally broken and head should need some rearrangements. Forehead looks flat, eyes and ear are offset. Temples should fit where the ear is now.

I hope you find this useful, it's only my point of view.

Ruanjia does have stylistic choices which are mimicked by many asians and a few westerners too. It's just the way he uses colour and value, and the extra light sources he adds in the shadows (like conmana is adding that orange light in the face) etc. If you actually look around you will notice many superficial aspects of his work that others copy. Besides, Ruanjia's fundamentals are fairly strong but he still is a weak draftsman/weak at the human figure. His livestream things are proof of this.

Anyways, conmana obviously has some degree of fundamentals, but I still think they are fairly weak overall. I'm not trying to be mean or a douche, I'm just saying it as I see it. His draftsmanship and knowledge of light and form can be a lot stronger. Doesn't matter if you think he can polish an image a little more to make it look alright--polish has little to do with core fundamentals.
