Well for starters, don't stray away from the ref. Your values/colors are way off. Your image is a lot brighter than the ref overall, and eyes are never that bright, it looks like they're glowing. You're actual rendering ability is kinda getting there but I'd focus more on studying values at this point.

It looks great, anon. Just work on your laundry list and make sure photoshop isn't arbitrarily blending your colors to green. Also, I know you said you had to work on the lighting on her implants, but depending if that blue light is glancing offer her face or if it is coming at a more direct angle, those implants will cast a shadow on her neck. As for the orange lighting, you may want to take away more of your shadow layer and make those orange points more defined so that they illuminate her face more. This anon does have a point though, >>1754028 you have to be careful with shadow layers so that they don't annihilate your values. The face geometry is most definitely still there, so the other anon may be blind, dense or just using a low brightness monitor but you still have to be cautious.

Also wrong. There is nothing in that pic that he would need to finish or correct that would require such a massive rework. Changes, yes. Colossal fuck-up? No.

While it may not be fair sometimes for an artist to use the "I'm still working" bit as an excuse for imperfections, it's even moreso unfair for the critic to use the "I'm still working" bit as a golden ticket to assume the worst.

Also...

>spending hours upon hours on a painting
>not engineering the ability to make massive changes in a moments notice

Instead of critiquing artists for their ability to paint, you should learn how to critique better so you break the bad habit of focusing on things that are more or less off limits.

Anon here. Tried my hand at a paintover and got a little carried away. It's not great, but hopefully it helps somewhat. And of course, if anybody else wants to jump in and correct my mistakes feel free to do so.

Some notes:
-Pay attention to plane changes, particularly when it comes to separating light from shadow. Since your light source is upwards and to the front, planes that face this should be lit, including the area above the lips, the lower lips, the top of the chin, etc. Mine isn't perfect, but look up an Asaro head and study that from various angles and lighting directions if you haven't already. This link talks about separating light and shadow very well:
http://www.erikgist.com/ErikGist_WattsAtelierFigureTutorial.pdf

-Colors are still a little garish. Mine isn't great either, so in the future I'd suggest finding some lighting/environment refs that somewhat match what you're going for so that you have a visual guide. Pay attention to the color of the primary light source (and its other qualities), the local color of the object you're painting, and the colors in the surroundings (ambient light sources). I didn't use a ref, and it shows. Doing more studies of master portrait painters will also help a lot.

-You drew the features as if viewed from a lens that's very close to the face. I tried to correct that a bit.

-Your bouncelights are too bright, which is breaking up your shadow shapes. Your big value shapes should be clear and read easily from afar.

-Your edges are okay, but fall apart in places. Schmid's Ala Prima has a great section on edge control.

No problem.

Basically a wide lens amplifies perspective distortions (things close to the viewer look very close; things far away look very far). A long lens does the opposite, where it 'flattens' an image (things close look farther away than they are; things far look closer than they are). This is shown in gif related. The image is made by taking many photos using different focal length lenses, and either stepping closer or farther away from the object to keep it the same size relative to the picture frame.

In your original painting, it had a similar wide-angle lens distortion that you see in selfies. Though there are ways to plot out the perspective using station points to avoid this effect, it's much easier to eyeball it. You get a good enough feel for the approximate distortion that the human eye sees by painting still lifes and portraits from life.

There's more on that here:

add flat local colors underneath the lines
block in the shadow shapes
start rendering

Just throwing around colors without any structure and gameplan is bound to end in a disaster.

If you're aiming for a painting, then be sure to paint everything. A lot of things that could be painted with large brush strokes are instead drawn in with thin, dark, sloppy lines that do not exist in real life. This isn't to say you can't have a base drawing, but don't use that drawing to define your final product.

Do some master copies. Watch some painting demos by pros you want to emulate. You need to make the transition from lines to shapes (still using line to define the edges of your shapes), then eventually shapes to forms (still using shapes to guide your placement of forms). I'd read through this:

Your lightsource is off, based on the highlight and also the cast shadow. Next time you paint, focus on the overall shape first, then the values. Seems like you're too caught up in trying to color paint the onion that you didn't get the fundamentals right.

Keep in mind that the shape of the onion is sphere-like, so get some sphere lighting ref if you could, and see how the form shadows are formed as it recedes from the sides of the onion, and also see any core shadows and reflected light that forms on the subject. Apply it to your onion.

Also, depending on the type of onion, you might want to add more range to the hues you are using. For yellow onion, it is light yellows, and a some brown in it.

There's no red in yours, the original had very red shadows. Not enough contrast either, that highlight on the back should be lighter and a bit more yellow. I think I should probably delete all of my brushes besides like four of them or something.

And yeah I've used just hard round and stuff before but the edges with more texturey brushes can get me places faster, but it's just about deciding where I want to go because I always lose myself. With paint and things I know how far I can push it but with digital you can practically make a photo. For me, it's hard to know when to stop.

Love the brush you're using to leave implied details (seems like a very popular choice among concept artists).

The secret to getting better at art is finding a balance of giving a shit and not giving a shit.

The saddest reality of being an artist is realizing you'll probably always have problems with your drawings/paintings/etc, no matter how good you get. Once you realize this though, things become a lot better. The biggest thing holding a new/younger artist back is that they usually have skewed expectations.

"I gotta become this good in x amount of time!"
or
"This person is younger and much more experienced than I, I've failed".

Gotta try and have fun with your art, even if you don't like it. Every single drawing you ever do will make you better.

A good way to knock yourself out of depression is to keep older pieces. You can always look back on where you once were, and where you are now. It'll make you happier.

i noticed in all the underwater pictures that you usually get a very high contrast between light/dark and the shadows tend to be very blue/purplish
you also get this weird pattern from the waves, but it was too complicated for me to try out

Not >>1755226 but colors basically come in 2 flavors: warm and cool. In a really simple sense, warm colors are reddish and cool colors are blue-ish. You can't have reddish shadows and reddish highlights, and you can't have blue-ish shadow with blue-ish highlights. You want opposites.

Cool shadows with warm highlights are usually the best for skin tones. So much so that hollywood goes off the deep end with it:

Are you working from a ref? It just looks strange because some elements are handled substantially better than others.

Try to approach this like you would an oil painting. Establish all your big shapes before refining - we should see this much of the black background poking through everywhere. Consider utilizing an underpainting to bring in some life to your colors in the future. I'd also look out for color temperature changes between the lights and the shadows.

Try experimenting with more opaque brushes. A circular or square brush with a slight chaulky texture is a very versatile starting point for experimenting. Try to steer clear from brushes that give you hairy, tiny separate lines (many brushes have their uses, but the ones you're using here aren't really helping to describe form or texture).

The face is too large for the cranium. Also, the nose is a bit long and the lips a bit low. I can't quite tell whether you're aiming for African or Indian descent, but some refs can help.

The lips aren't lying along the centerline of the face, but instead it looks like he's pulling them to his right. The eye lids are missing their thickness. Pay attention to the planes involved - the edge of the lower eyelid faces upwards, and should catch light and be brighter than the rest of the lower eyelid. Yours has eyelashes making direct contact with the white of the eye. Check out Proko's two eye drawing videos on youtube for some pointers.

I do like how distinct the silhouette is. Just be sure to recognize and distinguish which forms are from muscle and which are from bone. Also for the silhouette make sure your forms overlap correctly in 3D space (ex: the ball form around the lips should come in front of the far cheekbone, etc).

>> No.1755476

>>1755267
The eye on our right needs a lot of work. The eyelids have the wrong shape and are missing some thickness. Pay attention to which planes are upward facing and which ones are downward facing.

The values and colors for the white of the eye and the iris are off. The white should be greener, darker, and you should see a clear difference in value between the medial edge and the lateral edge. Remember that it is a sphere with eyelid wrapped around it. That spherical form should be evident in your values.

most brushes make my traces go slower, so it annoys and make it worse on my computer / tablet T-T, but yes, I need to change all that

I really shouldn't be redlining but here's how I think you should handle the face, even if you're going for a more androgynous look it would help if you just squared the jaw some. Right now the face is overly feminine, it's basically a teenage girl's head on a male body. As for the rest, well you can feel free to disregard that as I messed up too much anyway and stiffened the pose but I felt the torso was a bit on the long side and the clavicle had too much of an angle in yours making the neck appear much longer than it really is.

These are just some vaguely relevant mountain climbing shots, but you could also look at monkeys and such climbing, spiderman, or that real life spiderman guy who does spins while he climbs and such. Parkour and those Russian climber videos might be good to look at too, find some nice shots of them hanging from a ledge.

Hm, alright. I thought the pose was fine (save for the left hand grabbing the rock, which might need some work) because he was being supported to some extent by resting his feet on the rock.

Again let me say that I am fucking loving the fact that we're getting more traditional art in these threads.

I like it.

Use a softer brush for the skin.

The head is too big. Look at your reference, if you imagine a line from nose to the breast it would be almost vertical.
Try to see relations between the parts of your drawing.

If you want to mach the colors then the background should be more blue or purple-ish. and notice how the skin color is warmer around the lower abdomen and around the face.
Notice how the hair on either side of the highlight is more saturated and red.

Hope this helps

So do you charge more or less for making 4 characters in exactly the same off balance pose but with different hair and mostly skin tight clothing?

I've been drawing something in ms paint about once a month this year and I've been surprised at how I'm improving. It's motivating me switch to paper&pencil and actually learn art. But before that happens, could I get critique on this latest drawing?

In particular, I'd like to know what anatomical mistakes I made. I was very confused about the ribcage, the collarbones, and the knees. (and of course the hands+feet, but I haven't studied those yet)

talking bout anatomy like that when you're just skipping any actual learning and going right to the animu style be a waste of time foo

try the alt art thread, they're more accepting of this kind of shit

I didn't realize anime had a different way of drawing bodies. I thought it was just the head.

tempted as I am to find a picture of something clamp has made.

I don't know what you want to be said here. You make a doodle once a month, it's going to look like a doodle made by someone who doesn't practice much.

With drawing like many things in life you'll get out of it what you put in.

I'd like some more feedback on this painting. Am I just polishing a piece of garbage? Should I be focusing on more complex shapes? It seems very plain to me.

you might want to focus on the grip on the shotgun a little more and maybe add some detail to one of the thighs (i.e. a knife holder or something)

It's only polishing garbage if you're in your comfort zone or you're not learning anything, if you're learning/struggling/thinking then keep going anon. I'd say that complex shapes aren't as important as the overall simple shapes. Pic related. You can have the wizard guy just on his own, but a simple background and strong lighting , as well as decent shape design, will help it a bunch.

For practical advice, I'd say push the lighting, I'm guessing it's coming from the staff right? Could make it iconic with some nice shapes in the background.
