since last night ive been having this issue with the brush.
as you can see in the pic the brush randomly lays pressurefree strokes every once in a while.
ive searched for possible solutions like renaming the settings folder and stuff but its not working.
never had this before really,it just started happening an hour or two after i got some tool presets. That makes me think the new presets are the culprit but as i said ive already tried renaming it and the problem's still there.
Its annoying.
>>1752454
what dont you understand precisely? a cast shadow is a shadow cast by a form hit by light. imagine an object like a cilinder, imagine a light is coming from its right so the object(the cilinder) is gonna cast a shadow to its left, on the surface it(cilinder)'s standing on. this cast shadow is based on the form of the object and the strength, source, distance of the light. im explaining it badly i think although its really simple. just observe things in real life, grab an object and put it against a light and you will see.

That depends on what you want out of your drawing abilities.

If you want to become a realist painter and you don't mind using reference for the rest of your life, than you'll want to check angles and get everything down line for line.

If you want to be able to draw from imagination, you'll want to break everything down in to basic shapes. Everything. Even while not drawing.

I've found that it happens when you learn something new. Before you learned the new knowledge some things were automatic, you did them without thinking actively. But now that you have to add the new skill, you concentrate on everything you do, to try to integreate the new knowledge, which makes you less relaxed and you're gesture more stiff. You kind of feel like you don't know anything anymore because every stroke is hard again....so it takes a few days to trial and error till you find how to apply the knew knowledge. Once that happens you usually get back to doing what you know how to do automaticly and get a sudden break trough.

It's funny... Your post answers more of your question than you realise.

The image you've attached is 50% of the answer. We draw things from oblique, profile views directly head-on or side-on to understand where the points correlate and essentially build our understanding of how to render the polygons in our mind.

To understand proportions and measuring on any object, you're going to want to draw a flat side view, a front view and back view before you attempt to put it into perspective.

That's the proper way to do it anyway.
The other 50% is practice.

I'm planning on buying Loomis so that I can practice at work. However, my job doesn't allow us the use of pencils, only dry erase markers. It's some ass-backwards privacy policy that makes less sense the more you think about it.

So, do any of you guys think it would be detrimental at all for me to practice the basics with a dry erase marker/board rather than a pencil and paper?

I will also be practicing the normal way at home, but I spend a lot of time doing nothing at work so it'd be a waste not to utilize that time.

Well, you need 50-50 imagination and study to improve, You need to apply what you learn or you are just going through it on autopilot,

Doing quick sketches is fine, but also do at least one longer drawing each day (minimum 30minutes). This can be either a study or imagination piece, try to keep up the 50-50 here. In the longer pieces, decide how much time you will spent beforehand and keep fixing problems you find till the time is up.

Working from imagination is very frustrating, but try to relax and analyse where your problems are, you improve way faster this way!

There are some people who are very good at drawing animals (furfags and dragonfags mostly) but for some reason they're GODAWFUL at drawing humans, why does it happen? how is it possible? take some deviantartist for example:
I would expect enough skill from someone as experienced as this finnish girl to be able to draw a decent and pleasant looking human already, specially since she has a long as fuck comic. But instead I see... pic related...

Even the clothes are shit. Is there some explanation for this? I can't eat the "oh it's because she draws more animals and dragons than humans" because you don't usually need reference for humans after doing a pokemon comic as long as hers half-full of humans. I've improved by drawing all kinds of shit and I'm automatically a lot better at something new I wasn't good two years ago if I try it for the first time, no joke, and I don't think I'm as skilled as that girl yet. But this is one of those times where I can tell how shit someone else is at something without being better than that person. Why does it happen? does she have shit taste at picking her lines for humans? is it just a bunch of bad habits at drawing humans? is it on purpose? am I the one with shit taste here and those human drawings are actually good?

So I'd decided that I'd draw every hand and hand accessory featured in George Bridgman's book "the Book of a Hundred Hands" no less than three times just to flex that mental library a bit but I had an epiphany only a few pages in. His hands are very gestural and sketchy throughout. Contrary to Loomis whose books feature mostly complete images with strong, deliberate lines, Bridgman's book features work that is decidedly more "loose".

Long story short is it even desirable to copy this kind of material even though it's so "abbreviated"? Should I just use the construction techniques and information on the mechanism from the book but draw from photographs/my own goddamn free hand or perhaps even "fill in" what's missing from the illustrations in Bridgman's book with references of my own and basically create original artwork instead?

Any tips for 'creating' interesting poses from imagination?

>> No.1754793

>>1754765
Have a clear action, intent, and personality in mind. Say you have someone sitting. What kind of chair are they sitting in: is it too big, is it comfortable? What kind of environment is the character in? Who else is he/she interacting with? What's the character's personality like: are they dominant; informal; friendly; reserved; outgoing? What has this person's day been like? Is there a reason they're sitting now? How long have they been sitting for, and how long will they continue to do so? All of these and more will determine what pose is most appropriate - studying body language by observing people around you will fill in the gaps.

The same thought process of planning your scene and knowing your character will help you come up with suitable, interesting poses in any scenario. Knowing a thing or two about gesture, guiding the viewer's eye, etc will also help.

Can someone please tell me what they think about the so called two ways of drawing?

People have been saying that there is the smart way to hit a professional level and the hard way.
For example, studying loomis, hampton or vilppu or going to FZD are considered the smart way.
Where as someone that does nothing but sketch in their sketchbooks everyday is the hard way.

Don't most people do a mixture of both?
Or am I just wasting time sketching in my sketchbook, knowing that my work is full of anatomical errors and incorrect perspective?
I want to believe that focusing on studies and methods only is possible, but it kills the creativity sometimes.

I have also heard of the 50/50 balance of studies/sketching anything you want.
I guess in the end it doesn't matter how you do it as long as you make it happen.
Though the thought can be really aggravating sometimes.
That thought being "am I really studying right? Isn't this way a waste of time compared to this way?".

I'm not asking for a magic instantaneous ability to draw,
though if I knew what I was doing I know I could put even more effort into it.

I just want to be able to draw people accurately in perspective. Is that so hard? I feel mentally challenged sometimes.
It's just a few shapes! What is wrong with me?! Damn!

I guess this is more of a rant then a question, so I'll ask again.

What is the smart way to study and practice, short of 120k for FZD or Art center? Just Loomis and the masters?

There's no "hard way", if someone "does nothing but sketch in their sketchbooks everyday", they will progress BUT they will also gain bad habits. It's inevitable because they have nobody to correct them.

Then one day they'll want to correct those bad habits, which are now deeply ingrained in them.
It's smarter for a beginner to learn things correctly from day one.

But studies should have a focus, a goal. Don't stop drawing whatever the fuck you want on your free time. Those are 2 different activities. On the first, you're learning something new, on the latter, you're applying everything you've learned so far.

So I know some drawing tablets are used with PC, but is it possible to use them separately? Say, while in a park or a bus? Are there tablets that can be used in both ways (assuming using them without PC is possible at all)?

When buying my first tablet what should its size be? Pros cons of sizes please.

Any answers appreciated.

I'm going to buy a Monoprice tablet. Am I going to screw myself out of $56? Some people swear that it works great.

>> No.1755651

It's a good brand. Sometimes it has driver issues, but their return policy is perfectly fine too, so no worries.

I own both a Monoprice and Bamboo - don't prefer one over the other, but the Monoprice was half the price of the Bamboo for the same quality.

On the Monoprice I lost the pen pressure function for a few weeks and couldn't find the cause - however, it fixed itself and has worked perfectly ever since. The Bamboo has issues with turning touch on and off - even when turned off, the touch function (being able to use the tablet surface with something other than the stylus) keeps working at times and messes up my workflow when I accidentally touch the tablet.

A downside of the Monoprice might be that the stylus uses batteries, but for me personally that doesn't matter at all.

In short, I recommend buying a Monoprice. :)
Have fun making digital art!

I'm trying to understand drawing forms, but the book seems to spend almost no time focusing on the forms themselves, so I've hit a wall there. I don't have a feel for details and shit, either, so that's basically hopeless. As a colorblind person I have a few questions:

First of all, I know my terminology is incorrect.

1. How exactly do I know what color I should use for shadows?

2. When painting with watercolors, would it be best to mix ambiance tones to the paint and then paint in a negative space to create shadows, or to have a shade tone already mixed and just paint over dry paint in the areas I want shaded?

2.5 Does it look bad to use any hue for ambiance? Is it fine to use various different shading tones in the same painting (for example pink for skin and blue for concrete etc)? Is it odd to use a specific color for shading instead of taking into account the color of the object that's being shaded?

3. Does sunlight give a yellowish hue to objects?

>>1756535
I'll assume you're red-green blind.
1. Choose a cooler color for shadows, so something closer to blue.
2. Don't paint, sorry
3. Yeah the color you choose does matter. Think of it like seasonings you cook with. If you don't add enough then it tastes bland, if you add just anything it's gross. Same with color. If you don't use enough it looks bland (sometimes done on purpose), and if you use the wrong colors it clashes too much. Your specific example sounds fine. And you always should take into account what color the object is and the ambient lighting.

3. Yes it does. Some indoor lights tint everything cyanish blue. It's that almost white color between blue and green.

>> No.1756548

>>1756541
The colorblind here, thanks a lot. I know choosing any color for the shadings would be a mistake, but I imagine changing the shading color slightly from one end of a painting to the other would create a nice effect in some cases, no? One last thing, if you will: I often see white houses/structures and when I look at the shadows in it I don't know if it's gray or blue. Logic says gray but assuming skylight is hitting the darker side then should it be blue?
I always try to imagine whatever I look at as how it would look in a cloudy day and then add saturation and some brightness to the areas hit by the light, as well a hint of sunlight. I find this would be easier than to try to find an appropriate color for the shadows based on the original colors. However I feel that this kind of takes away from the beauty of hue changes in shadows, but I'm not very sure how I should go about that.

I think I usually get enough hue variance just by tinting every color normally. The shadows of a red object are a little purple, while the shadows of a yellow one are a little green. Things in heavier shadows or lighting will have heavier tint.

And whites reflect the color of what's around them. So a white ball in some grass would probably have both green and blue shadows on it.
You can color pick this image in MS Paint to see.

However I still lack the ability to draw from imagination. As of now I'm going to learn gesture and anatomy, is there any other things I should take note of?

Style come naturally, and you don't have to master the figure to have a style. You need to expose yourself to new art as often as possible, he work of other artists is the biggest influence on style, but your style is also influenced by other life experiences and personal taste.

Drawing from imagination is important too, especially in developing a style. Just take a break from studies now and then to paint a canvas without regard for the outcome, a loosening up exercise from imagination

What are you doing when you study for anything else? Repeating something until it is ingrained into memory for you to recall further down the line when you no longer have access to the material.

Doing study for art is the same thing. You draw an eye over and over from different angles until it is committed to memory. Then later, when you are doing your own artworks, you recall what an eye looks like from the angle you need and you draw it without having to look for a reference.

This applies to doing any study in art, not just remembering what things look like. Composition studies teach you to quickly spot good and bad compositions, therefore allowing you yourself to create good compositions. Perspective studies do the same thing... etc.

It's important that you are actively trying to understand what is happening in your reference picture, and then applying what you've learnt as much as possible in your own original pieces. Art isn't much different from anything else in life; it just takes effective, efficient and repetitive effort to become adept.

Like I said above, as long as you are doing it actively (trying to understand why things are the way they are in the photo) and by eye (no tracing or overlaying) then there is absolutely no problem.

When it comes to studies generally quantity rules over quality. You're not trying to create some pretty, you're trying to learn how the world works. That's why you'll often see people submit pages of nothing but simplistic gesture and figure drawings that took them a minute to do each. The more they do, the more variety they have stored in their minds.

That's not to say there's no value in spending time on lengthier studies. Often more complex things like eyes will need more time allowance, and trying to rush through a perspective study isn't really the best idea. Not to mention we all learn differently and at different paces. At the end of the day what's important is that after you've finished the study that you've gained more knowledge than before you started.

What are some good books that thorougly deal with rendering and lighting? Focusing on basic shapes, how overexposed, underexposed lighting works, how the specularity of the object changes the highlight intensity, differences between overcast and directional light, difference in surface materials and so on and on.

I've looked through the sticky but there's surprisingly a lack of books that cover this topic in its entirety. Most books have a short chapter on rendering and that's it. And yes I know the best way to learn about this stuff is to draw from life, I'm not trying to replace that, I'm just looking for some complimentary literature about this topic.

I remember reading about an artist, who painted a large canvas but it didn't turn out that good, so he cut out just one part - a dead guy on the ground. And that became an acclaimed masterpiece.
Can someone remember the artist's name? Or the painting's?

There is actually a way to do this and draw a perfect cube, the method is on Norling's book tho (and on David Chelsea's as well)

but as this anon says >>1757507, just do that

Where is the point for any aspiring artist to give up drawing because they hit a wall that makes it impossible for them to improve further? When can I say, "Fuck it. Art and I were just never meant to be"?

yes it's norling

I think that part on Chelsea's book is in the one at the end about circles in perspective.

all you gotta do i stop it dry. draw straight lines slow down just enough so it looks nice but still try to do it as fast as possible. dont erase just keep drawing and try to do it better each time. at first it will look like shit but once you identify the shape it will look better.

When sketching digitally do you want to draw at a smaller resolution, then bump it up when inking? For wherever reason I have a terrible time sketching at high resolutions/dpi and find it much easer when sketching at lower settings so I am able to zoom 70 to 80 percent. I can't tell if this is psychological, or if sketching at higher resolutions really does make it difficult.

What I always do is one of these:
>sketching on a 1500 x 1500 canvas at 35% size
>sketching small

There is a lot of ways tho, pick the one which fits better to your way of drawing

Ah, gotcha, guess I might stick with drawing the sketch at a smaller res, then bumping it up if I want to ink it. I appreciate it(sorry to ask in a autosage thread)

guys how do you get used to drawing fully sized work...Like I usually just create thumbnails in my sketchpad for works but as soon as I try to create them on a larger canvas...it just loses something
