Been working on this all day. Big departure from the more organic (read: sloppy and shitty) style I usually have. Perspective always intimidates me, but I'm trying to make it work here.

Better without the buildings.

Your first version had a very romantic and untamed quality to it; Add in a town up top and it just looks kinda weird.

If you insist on some sort of habitation, having the village in the valley being dwarfed by nature I think would have a better impact.

yeah but hellboy isn't easy to do in your own style because most of the time it just looks like shit. i have a bunch of hellboy issues and at the end of it are hellboy drawing's from famous artists. the best one is from dave cooper(cant find the particular pic on google), frank miller's version isn't too bad either, duncan fregedo's version is passable too and most of the others look like crap.

turns out duncan fegredo actually works for mignola.

pic is mignola's first design for hellboy

and i really dont like your version at all. even if it wasn't hellboy, that face is weird as fuck

Bro, that anon told you what was wrong with your picture in his first comment. He's "weird and expressionless".
Drawing a character is more than just drawing a collection of physical features that character is known for, it's about capturing the personality of that character.
That anon showed that Hellboy is quite a grump, and I don't know Hellboy but he also looks world-weary, maybe easily pissed off.
What you've drawn is quite generic, and I'm not sure why, but there's something very unsettling about such a blank face gazing off into the distance like that.
Don't get me wrong, I like your rendering, but I think you're doing a disservice to the character.

Here's a rough sketch for a screen-printed shirt illustration, so there's a color limit. I'm generally happy with the sketch, but I wanted some input on it before I jump into making the high-res file. My main concern is the face. Something about it kinda of seems wonky, like Kraid's jaws are opening up like a bird's beak rather than reptile jaws. Know what I mean?

Any other details I could add?

A few things:

1.) The perspective is all fucked on that castle, and it looks really goddamn weird as a result.Looks as if it's about to fall off that mountain.

2.) The foreground pops too much from the background without any sort of continuity. Look at the thumbnail, it's like you've put two pictures side-by-side.

3. Just a stylistic critique but it looks odd that there's this fantasy scene with a gryphon rider just kind of looking away from it. Did you not want to paint the back or something?

Not a bad first try though. Biggest thing for me that stands out is the color inconsistency between the left and the right side, everything else is a more minor fix.

Weekly No-Quality Figure Drawing. Lost some contrast while scanning, oh well. Used HB for sketch, B, 2B and 3B for rendering. Mechanical pencil only when I got frustrated with drawing and rendering some details in the face.

What I noticed myself:
-face squished and forehead needs to be larger
-left torso side needs more "fat waves"
-slightly too sharp arms
-pointy_knees.jpg
-lol rendering.

At least rendering isn't as rough as previously, maybe need to use a different pad bellow my drawing since this one has a lot of texture which shines through when I use softer pencils. Definitely should try drawing on A3 again with more than 3 hours of work.

If you're feeling that lost, start watching some videos or reading some Loomis. It's not the holy grail that everyone makes it out to be, but it does help significantly and also helps you learn where to go next. Participating in discussions here-- not just in drawthreads, either, has really helped me with my ideas of what I should be doing with my paintings.

>Painting hair feels just overwhelming
Don't try to paint individual strands. It's gonna look awful if you give your painting spaghetti hair. It'll also clash with the rest of your painting. Paint hair in sections/clumps/whatever, get the overall feel of volume for the hair without worrying too much about the fine details. see pic

here's what I got--

It looks weird because she's leading with her left foot with the scythe so far away from the rest of her body. It's like she's pulling against something planted in the ground, like it's a street sign or something. I tried moving the scythe forward or whatever, but really the easiest fix is to dump the movement in the dress so that she's standing better. Lowered the elbow a bit and moved the scythe closer because it looked too far. Added some sleeve material on (her) right because it took mea second to realize her hand was on her waist, and you need something there to make her look less like a one-eyed wonder.

Face looks like it needs something. Looks too neutral. I'm not saying it needs an evil scowl, but it needs something to give it character.

hope this helps

Generally the practice for painting hair is painting it as several plains with according light-dark ranges. Brushes themselves would only hasten the process and allow you to do several strokes in the same direction for hair, principle still applies. Hair - small "tubes" when you get into detail. The picture from other guy who commented - the hair first shapes around the head and then adds texture by going into detail, think of it that way.

When you're doing digital studies let's say, of people, in the beginning and are clueless what to use, thinking in planes use the eyedropper to select some color in the area your doing and add it in. It is not good practice to do this in the long run, but you should first understand what color you should be looking for. Your portrait seems lifeless, lighting is also too diffused on the general skin and quite strong with the lips and on the edge of her face.

As said before, you need to first grasp, what colors should be where. I'd start with 1 or 2 small color-picker copies. Then do 3 or so paintings from pictures without picking the color, trying to get it right. Not too detailed, you just need to understand the image. Afterwards try out painting from life, see if it's working better. Simple stuff first, with the last one you'd do in a row something harder.

It's very subjective. There is no strict definition for fan art, and the description you described it as sounds bland. I think fan art that is "out of costume" - as in it's not trying to match the source art style - is much more interesting than trying replicate its usual style. There's nothing cooler than seeing a character in a completely refreshing style.

You could use some better control of value, pick your values a bit more carefully, dont go full white and full black unless you really need to.
Squint at the image to pick out big shapes.
Control your brush more too, you have some scratchy stuff going on, big strokes, confident strokes. really decide where you want them to be before you flail your arm on them.

Heres a quick paintover, mostly trying to show value/ brush work. You also missed some shapes in there but i am sure i fucked it up too.

Oh it's just because there's an implied line on the line art itself. (nose bridge) When you shade it like that you're showing that you don't know how the nose curves at all..

A lot of anime-ish artists solve this by only putting part of the nose in shadow

1)For my attempt at an alla prima timed painting (1.5h). 8"x10" oil on canvas

If its supposed to be metal then I really suggest doing some metal study first. You dont have at all the key element that identifies an object in a painting as made of metal, specularity.

Other than that:
- right side of the torso looks really weird and skewed, like if his hand was pushed inside his chest; in fact the chest piece in general seems weirdly skewed, bad perspective
- pose could be more interesting
- rather ambiguous lightning scenario, seems like just ambient light without proper light source, not very interesting to watch

Take a look at this video from Anthony Jones, it might give you some ideas how to fix the lightning issue:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1lRbALDiXo

(if its not embedded then sorry, I have no idea how to embed a video in here)

Second part of that video might be also useful for you since it also is about metal reflectivity.

Currently working in a Ursula piece to challenge my self with a non digital medium.
I feel good but I'm having trouble going forward with rendering. I have a limited set of colors, but I'll finish this up soon.

i just have small-scale doodles right now since I can't find reference pictures to start off.

What do you call the pic related pose? I'm not getting anything with "elbow rest" or "hand holding face" .etc, please help me with my google-fu.

The arm has no shape. Even if the arm didn't come up all the way through the sleeve (as shown), there's still going to be definition as to where the arm lies inside of it. Otherwise she looks like an amputee.
If the arms are behind the body and the sleeves are just flopping around (which I'm assuming they aren't, but just for the sake of it being another possibility), there's absolutely no definition as to where the arms hang back behind the body.
Eat a dick.

This guy is fucking with you. It's not bad for highschool, but you need to tighten up your lines and work on values. Also, you need to be neater with your lead.
