Nothing wrong with tracing. It's just another means to an end, but it's not like you're actually good at something if you trace shit. Get ready for people to call you out on it if it's proffessional work. You may think that obscure porn photo isn't gonna get recognized but it do, and then people will doubt you had skill in the first place.

I trace now and then, but not when I'm doing actual work. Just personal pieces, doing some shitty photoshop or whatever. You trace when you want to focus on something other than what you were tracing.

>> No.1739316

>>1739274
If you trace someone else's work for something that you want to display/sell, then you're doing it wrong.

Tracing for experimenting/learning purposes is completely fine. Tracing photos, especially ones you took yourself, is also fine.

>> No.1739317

>>1739274
Is it acceptable if you're trying to absorb a certain part of a style?

>> No.1739318

>>1739274
Tracing is fine if you are doing it to try to understand the image, not if you are tracing to try and create something you will claim as yours.

I used to trace out the hip and chest constructs on difficult poses in order to better understand exactly what the body was doing while it was twisted/bent/contorted. It really helped me to better understand what I was seeing and helped me with my anatomy studies. It also made it easier to use more challenging poses as reference (not tracing) because of what I learned from doing that.

Other uses are: tracing to find vanishing points, or to understand perspective in a photo.

Again to re-iterate, tracing is bad when you are claiming work as your own and attempting to sell it, use it in a portfolio or as an example of your skill level. Tracing as a form of study for personal use only is fine, as long as you learning something from it.

>> No.1739322

Okay, not sure if this is the board to ask about this.
Let me know if it isn't.

I am trying to animate in Snyfig
I have circled two polygons in red.
There is another hypothetical polygon represented by the SOLID blue line.

I want the horizontal width of this blue line to be exactly the distance between the two polygons circled in red.

(eg. I can move the blue polygon anywhere along the y axis (depicted with white arrows) and the blue polygon will always touch the two red circled polygons, example would be the DOTTED blue line.)

I know you can link polygons by vertex in Synfig, is there anyway I can do what I am describing here?

No, there isn't. If you made something original, it's copyrighted to you. Here's a quote from some website, I can't bother finding a more "legit" looking source:

>Q: What do I have to do to get copyrights in my artwork?
>A: Basically nothing. Under the copyright law, an artist is protected as soon as his or her original work is "fixated in a tangible medium," that means, as soon as the brush hits the canvas. The basic requirement for obtaining copyrights is originality. An artist can only get copyrights in his or her original expression, i.e., that which originates from the artist and is not copied from someone or something else.

Tonight i made a strange dream: the world is in some kind of post-aphocalictic disaster, i find myself at a low floor of a tall building at night, probably an old hospital, who has been arranged as a the place to live for a quite large group of people, solar panels on the roof provide electricity.
I take the elevator to an upper floor, when i get out a man welcome me, he was waiting for my arrival, he is shaked, something will soon appen; he orders a technician to turn off the power on the other floors, seems like this night we need it all for us. Now, the only light sources are the reflex of the spotlights that guards are using outside through the glass wall, and the door of an illuminated room in the end of an alley.
The man tells distractly about how his management helped to improve the quality of the sojourn in this place while guides me there, i don't listen to him. He opens the door and lets me in.
The bright light blinds me for a second; a group of familiar people turn in my direction, they are all set down facing a point of the room from which comes the slow, regoular sound of a machine for the measure of the heart-rate.
They are all serious, cordially salute me, someone stands up and give me a path on the back, nobody tells me why i am there, and however i'm not interested in listening it from them since i'm about to discover it anyway.
They peacefully return to their positions, and i mimic them.
Now we are all whatcing at an hospital bed in which figure is higly covered with a blanket.
I do some steps towards it.
Even if i can only see the head, i can tell the figure is no bigger than a baby, and, as easily, i can tell it isn't a baby, due to the old, emaciated aspect of the head.

I look closely. Finally i recognize the patient: I'm in front of what remains of Vilppu.
The throat cancer advanced dramatically since the last time i saw him.
I'm shaked, the sadness fills my heart while i think about how i remembered him, from his '70 vintage tapes, as a young, libertine, virile and slighly ambiguous artist with sideboards and the obligatory magnum PI moustache, who first drew and seduced the oldish but fit models on air and then, in the backstage, i always imagined, made them know love as if it was the first time.
His eyes are open, he is weak but notice my presence. Obviously he can't talk. Despite the situation, he doesn't seem to be melanconic, on the contrary, by the moment he sees me, a light to the eyes seems to bright his face. He is particularly pleased to see me; strange, because by logic he shouldn't even know how I am. Hell, i'm not even one of his biggest fans, and not even close to being a decent artist!
At this moment two other figures that i didn't notice before, who has been stayed quiet since i came, move from a corner of the room to the bed, discussing animatedly. I learn that one is the doctor, the other the publisher of the comic series Vilppu's was drawing before the illness made it impossible for him to continue. Vilppu has a contract with the publisher and still has to end the story. Until recently, despite being unable to draw with it's hands, Vilppu managed to do it with the use of the only thing he had a decent control on: his incisors teeth. Using an orthodontic device with a pencil glued to the teeths.

CONTINUATION:
But now his teeths have fallen off and the doctor, despite trying, didn't found a way to permit vilppu drawing. He removes another failed device from the mouth of the old man, shaking his head reseigned while the other man yells at his incompetence.
I, outraged but unable to interfere with the contracts rules, watch as Vilppu is still there, with placid looks, not saying a word nor making any resistance.
The doctor says he can't do anything, leaving the room, followed by the by now furious publisher.
Quiet reigns again in the room. Seems like an epoch has came to an end.
Then he moves. He is determined in jumping out of the bed. Before i can think anything, he's already supine on the floor, semi-nude. To my big surprise, but not fear, i see how the illness really took all his body, deforming heavily every part , and not only making the head smaller. The torso is now proportioned to the little bald head, and all his limbs are now smaller, and visibly weaker.
He watches me, and outlines a smile, like if he is making some irony: "yes, that's what i am now, years passes for everybody, didn't you know?"
I feel the impulse to fondle, to hug him, so i tender my hand to him.
But at this moment i understand. To him, i represent his legacy, for decades he teached us how to feel, and now he want to tend on to us everything he still have left: he curls up one my hand like a cat on a ball of wool, thanks to the little dimension he manages to do it perfectly, and for the first time i undertsand, and, as intended by the great master, once for all, i feel the pose.
Thanks Vilppu, even if i will never understand how to draw naked sexy girls, you definitely make me do cool dreams.

I don't even know what should i ask. 4 you Is it normal to dream this shit or just an effect of the antidepressants?

He needs to understand that drawing the same line a couple of times is fine when sketching, and then putting in the correct one stronger, but that trying to draw the perfect line first time, in lots of itty bitty chunks, is not a good thing.

I also think blind contour drawings are pretty useless, but by all means do a couple. I found drawing things from observation in a single line more useful; having the pen on the paper all the way through the drawing.

>>1740685
Even when doing observation, you should be doing the construction in your head. If you're not able to do that just yet, then do some faint construction on the paper first.

Everybody goes about it differently, but if say, you're drawing a portrait. You want to spend time measuring and constructing.

Make a light or mental tilt line, it's your gestural guide for the placement/tilt of the head. Best to start with finding your center and measuring to find the contours, common denominators. There are a lot of ways of going about it. Nose is usually the most centered placement of the face. Check out Kevin Chen and Hampton's demonstrations to see how they divvy up the proportions. This immensely helped me and a lot of other people. Of course I try to take measurements first. Hampton actually has a great section about the hierarchy of the face.

The face is 2 major parts.
-[1/2 = top of brow to bottom forming plane of nose]
-[2/2 = bottom of nose to bottom of chin/mandible]
--Bottom part of face is 3 major parts. [1/3 = bottom of nose to mouth opening] [2/3 = opening of mouth to top of chin formation][3/3 top of chin to bottom of chin/mandible]

The head itself you can just use the loomis construction methods or carefully measure on your own, with observation, common or reoccurring sizing and important landmarks.

Sorry for yapping too much. I included a picture, using a hampton chart I found online. I also added in orange bars to show the top of the forehead landmark in relation to the face.

Your lack of will to even write this question properly is much bigger problem than "lack" of imagination.
Only if you can work hard then you can develop imagination needed to draw creative and beautiful artwork.

But I still don't know should you bother with learning how to draw: finding job in this field is extremely hard, and drawing is not that great hobby - if you have any taste, then you'll be seeing your artwork as something disgusting (especially at the beginning).

tldr: if you're looking for hobby: play vidya;
if you're looking for job: you're stupid.

Yes. In all seriousness though, none. Unless your goal as an artist is to copy photos of sexy women, then none.
If you want to learn gesture then do gesture drawings. If when you try to illustrate your gestures and they look off then learn anatomy.
If when your anatomy looks off then learn how to add tone to form and how to colour form.
If you can do all these things and yet everything still looks off, you're drawing a guy, why are you drawing a guy.

I'd focus primarily on drawing from life, and to draw through forms, and to construct complex forms from basic forms. Use 2D shapes and analyses to check that you have positions of landmarks correct, but not to do the whole drawing for you.

I recall tehmeh mentioning an exercise when drawing from photos is to use a ref to create a stick figure of the pose, hide the ref, then draw the rest of the figure. i've been trying to draw every day and so far i've filled out 2 sketch books and working on a third, but its mostly just 1 page a day (and its a small sketch book, like the size of an average novel). Recently i kind of slowed down and missed a few days for one reason or the other, but i did take a drawing class that really didn't help me at all beside giving me access to materials to use and bigger assignments to do. I don't know how to push myself "out of my comfort zone" because i don't know where it is yet. I'm not good at anything, really, so i guess everything is out of my comfort zone. I can think about something really cool in my head but once i turn to the paper it just falls apart.

>Also, that exercise sounds neat, i'll give it a try. I have probelms just drawing basic shapes though, i always fuck it up somehow.
In that case, that'll be the first area you should tackle: basic forms and perspective. When drawing forms, everything else builds on top of that knowledge, so the sooner you become adept at it the better off you'll be. Norling's Perspective Made Easy has most of what you'll need on that topic, but there are plenty of great resources on perspective that you could look into. Ignore complex forms until you can do the basic forms.

If you have trouble copying 2D shapes as well, I'd look into something like Bargue plates before diving into perspective. There's a book (Bargue and Gerome Drawing Course IIRC) that includes a lot of plates, and what you should be focusing on. Drawing Made Easy by Lutz also covers what's essentially the same approach.

Chances are you aren't seeing improvement because you're tackling too complex of a subject matter before grasping the prerequisites. For everything you make and everything you learn, work general to specific. If you're ever stuck, focus your studies on the most basic component of the area you're struggling with and work your way up from there. [Ex: if you're struggling with color, try working with a limited 'monochromatic' palette focusing on change in color temperature; if you struggle with that then focus on value, etc]

>is figure drawing the way to practice/learn drawing?
You can practice all the foundational skills through figure drawing. Given that figures are extremely difficult to draw well, and how useful it is to be able to draw the figure, a lot of artists practice it. That being said, you can technically learn to draw without ever drawing a figure, you'll just have some catching up to do if you ever want to draw them in the future.

>Don't you get stuck into only being able to draw that?
If you're doing it correctly, you'll be building your foundational skills that will allow you to draw many things with a little bit of study/research.

>The commitment is scary
There's no commitment. You can do figure drawings in conjunction with whatever else you want to do (and you should). Nobody in their right mind would advise you to only draw the figure.

It sounds kinda corny, but I've found that playing just the right kind of audio while practising can help me keep going for way longer, which I guess will mean I'll get to a level I'm happier with sooner. If I just practice without preparing an environment there's a constant stream of words in my head telling me everything I'm doing is wrong and I ought to just give up and stop embarrassing myself.
However, if I play an audio-book, lecture or just a song with very catchy lyrics, it shuts that voice up, like feeding it a constant stream of words keeps the vocal part of your mind busy and lets you focus on the touchy-feely crap.
I managed to get like three hours of chewing through a perspective book that previously had me getting bored, depressed and easily distracted within half a hour because I was listening to Noam Chomsky talk about politics. I've noticed a similar occurrence when driving; during instrumental songs or albums my driving gets sloppy as fuck (I just got my license a couple weeks ago) whereas a song where you cannot ignore the vocals seems to make everything go smoother. So try that!

How do you get over the fear of drawing in front of people?

When I went to a life drawing class, I've had no problems there. It's a nice atmosphere, everyone is understanding, some people are even worse than you, and I could draw without having any anxiety or an on-set paralysis.

But, whenever I try to draw in front of other people, like my family, then the shit gets worse. Whenever I hear someone walk past me I lose focus, I stop doing shit, anxiety takes over, I start having thoughts that are anything but drawing. This doesn't happen when I'm alone.

The problem is getting to me, since I'm almost never alone. I feel like it is stopping me from drawing a lot of times, because I'd never start. Whenever I'm alone, it's fine, I just whip out a sketchpad and go at it. But, when I'm with someone I know I fear that they'll judge me. It's a very irrational fear, but I can't make it go away.

I usually don't give a fuck about anything, but when it comes to drawing I'm really insecure.
