The Gargoyle who sits near Saint Roberts Church sung its songs long into the night. The towns folk jeered and sued for peace. So the gargoyle shed a tear and turned to stone. The towns folk were too deaf too appreciate good song any way.

The focus is split between the guy in the air and the foreground samurai. Try arranging your values in a way that one is subordinate to the other.

I also don't like how the foreground samurai has his feet plants on the bottom of the picture frame. It really takes away from the image.

Kind of a minor nitpick but, samurai of that era wore their swords with the edge pointed upwards, wearing edge down was something that was done before katanas came into the picture. Tachi were worn edge down, so were gunto katana from WW2.

Try quickly blobbing in an edge up variation, I feel like it would look better.

Easiest way to make trees is to work dark -> light, with regards to the light source. Right now, the lighting is all over the place and makes no sense. Things have hard shadows in different, contradicting directions, and the sky isn't even communicating weather that would produce such harsh lighting. Thing's need to work in harmony and make sense.

Remember that even natural, organic settings such as a forest need perspective.

If you're using a reference, use even more. You need to understand more what a river is how it looks, how it reflects and how it behaves.

Recently finished this piece and put all my effort into it... tried photobashing for the first time because the company i'd like to intern at likes to see it.

posted it on several websites and facebook groups but havent got a single crit. So i was wondering if you could give me a honest opinion.
i'm not planning on doing this one all over again, so please keep it general.

Work on a better thumbnail. You want it to read clearly and have nice shapes. In your image it is muddy and dark, and a lot can be clarified. The guy in the foreground blends in with what is behind him. The monster's entire arm runs tangent to the edge of the plant. The light source doesn't really make sense and it overly bright.

Also you can work on integrating in the photos more effectively.

At the end of the day though the image is fairly weak, and your fundamentals are lacking. Sure you made some progress from that other image, but you are being deceived into thinking you are better than you are simply because photos give the false impression of more finish.

Continue playing with photobashing if you feel it is helping you get the internship, but realize you need to learn to paint too. If you can't do everything manually then the photobash will look poor.

You don't need to post this stuff. Draw more and fill sketchbook pages with these, focus on getting the principles into your head and then refining them so they look pretty. Then when you apply the knowledge, post a shot here and we'll tell you where you're lacking.

Rocks are hard, and so are the edges on their shadows. Some are hard, some are soft. Do some rock or statue studies focusing just on the shadow forms, it'll help a lot. Study Ruan Jia's stuff for that, hard edge, soft, lost, he knows what he's doing and does it well, pic related.

Previous anon's critiques are all valid in my opinion. The thumb sort of works, but is still pretty muddy, you can't even tell there is another figure in the shot that is close to the viewpoint on the left hand side.

Speaking of that figure.... Your figure in the bottom left needs a lot of work. The pose is awkward and the anatomy seems off. The arm looks like it's on a 2d plane, it doesn't appear to exist in 3d space at all, and it seems to be pulled in extremely close to the chest. It doesn't look like they are actually holding the gun. The other hand is also awkward and while you could do a pose like this and have the entire arm hidden, it just looks strange as it is right now. I cropped the figure and flipped it so you can see how it looks reversed, sometimes that helps because it lets you see it with fresh eyes.

I like the idea and I think you will be able to make this better. Good luck.

It's more that it doesn't look possible or practical. If you're going for him to look stocky that's great, but right now the torso doesn't fit at all with the rest of the body, as well as the head being too small. He's got the ab and pecs placement as if he's a skinny dude, but then this massively wide and long torso, it just doesn't make sense. If you change someone's body shape the whole thing has to work together, you see what I'm saying? Giving a skinny guy a super wide torso just looks wrong.

I can do a paintover or something if you can't see what I mean, but really I'd just say look for reference and find the body type you want and study it. If he has a squat, strongman look to him then he'll have thick round arms and legs as well as the torso being a wide barrel of core strength.

I feel like I always see things less dark and saturated than they really are but I find it really hard to keep that in mind while doing these. Finishing pictures can be a skill on it's own, almost independent of the drawing/sketching. And like any skill, it simply requires practice.

So try practicing specifically finishing pictures. Set that as a goal, and force yourself to do it. At first it will be hard and you will suck at it (that's why you don't want to do it!), but as you do it more and more, it gets easier.

I think a lot of artists go through this phase (including myself), doing only sketches, gestures, speedpaints, etc. If that's all you ever practice, no wonder you can't finish anything! At some point you're gonna have to step out of your comfort zone and expand your skillset to include doing complete, finished works.

What the fuck are you even talking about?

/fit/ does the same shit, only difference is /fit/s sticky actually works. and explains shit. and explains the resources it lists and gives you a quick rundown of why you should use that resource from the perspective of the fucking idiot.

Im not an expert but heres some ideas I got that might help out.

He seems off balance. When you twist an arm back you put the same side foot behind aswell. Gives you more balance and allows more rotation.

Hes arm looks like its sitting there rather than throwing something, unless the aim is hes doing it "casually".

The left arm would be used to balance the body and kept near torso & bended from elbow.

Made this quick thing on top of yours that might or might not help.

just about an hour doodle here. I'm really trying to work on my coloring-- I'm really awful with it, and it comes from an entire life of just doing line art or greyscale work. Start to finish this was about an hour last night-- there's a lot of rough parts, and a zillion things I'd fix, but it's a definite improvement in my workflow. this is the early draft I did in about five minutes

you only need the fighters. Consider removing detail, especially highlights from areas that aren't what i assume is your focal point, the face. the time you spent on the etremities should have been spent on the face.

Like I said, more or less everything. The design is pretty bad, the pose - what's he doing, anyway? Then you don't know how to render yet, looks like you smudged with your fingers. It really is of no use to continue counting what's wrong. You simply have to practice more to make anything critiquable.

don't like it. the face features are unappealing. can't you see how wrong is that necklace in the back?. learn to draw an ear. pushup bra? the water's edge between tits. where's the light source, and how do you explain the sharp chin shadow? cheekbones are too red for skin tone. shadows lack saturation. if you don't draw the lower eyelid the eyeball looks like painted on the skin.

Thank you! Any ideas for brushes I can use? Maybe some custom ones? Suppose I could play around with the brushes until I find a hard one to use. Looks like I kinda messed up with the coloring and the 'rigid' feel of it already. Definitely will be a thing to work on.

How improve?

Everything feels bad with the exception of a couple of parts of it.

Also I don't usually use custom brushes, just thought it'd be a nice change of pace, I likely won't use them again for a while in case anyone was going to say.

Value of the figure is too close to the backdrop it's against. Try putting some smoke or something in between the two to push the depth more.

can i get some thoughts
also, any tips on how to not overwork something? i really need to know when to stop

>> No.1740436

when you have overworked it and start to dislike it. redo it to the point where it is refined but not overworked. I found doing multiple drafts have increased my skills 200% over the past 2 months. I'm not longer postponing works because i'm afraid of messing up. I no longer stall using new techniques or colors or combinations or paper. I just do it then rework it. If you overworks something, just redo it. You will learn when to stop.
