baloons are ok but im just letting you know that your hatching texture is in direct contradiction to the forms you have described. The hatching should either follow the rhythms of the volume or wrap around the form. Right now your picture is looking a bit flat. I'd actually recommend some subtle circular hatching to get rid of that flat unidirectional hatching texture.

The shading look kind of flat for me, like it was a bas-relief. It's perhaps because you jump from a dark value to a light one, forgetting the middle values. Also, for the hand for example, you don't have actual dark values, but just a line, so it looks very flat.

don't half ass the shading on the balloons, they look stale.

Either keep them graphic or shade them as you would a spherical form, properly. Use line weight in whatever direction you go in.

and break up the balloons more, vary the size VARY THE ANGLES and use more overlaps. You have 4 balloons on bottom that are equidistant in appearance, even if I know they are in perspective, their separation makes them appear on the same plane. You can just change the distance.

And a personal suggestion from me would be to make them even BIGGER.

And in my mind's eye I feel like the soda can isn't that long, it's supposed to be a 12oz can? or is it one of those skinny cans? I think it might be more foreshortened than that, double check your measurements next time around.

As for the fabric, the colors and temps are looking good, just take notes on what folds you are seeing and how they intersect with each other. Look out for tension points and tension rods, areas where the fabric is going inert, etc.

Keep up the good work anon, I want to do a fabric study myself now.

Take this with a grain of salt, because I am not a Tehmeh or an amazing artist by any means, but I'm become knowledgeable about study habits. Definitely go reg on permanoobs.

You do need to up your production, however don't see it like going crazy. You just need to put yourself into a routine or at least know ahead of time what you are going to do in a study. Check out permanoobs, Go read the posts by algen and the others, they have excellent information on doing proper studies. I find I've definitely upped my production at least 4-fold what I used to. And I went from drawing copies of photos, to actually analyzing what the fuck I'm drawing and painting and applying it properly next time around. I definitely don't ask questions about not drawing enough anymore, because now I understand that I have a lot of work to do, and that I know what I need to do to improve.

C still shows the character though. If you must make it more like a "character illustration" just give your character a clear emotion and gesture. She's a merchant so, give your character the traits of a veteran salesman. I think it's very important to include elements of the merchandise as part of the image. A character holding 2 vials is unclear. But a carpet or sheet layed out with good tells us who we are dealing with.

I really haven't ever done landscapes before. Most of the time I just do portraits or sketches and leave it at that. I've been trying to work a lot on working with color and actually "finishing" stuff. This is about as cliche'd as space fantasy wallpaper stuff gets but I kind of like it.

Google Images is your friend. There you can find plenty of reference images of boats on water ranging from murky to clear.
Try it out.
Also, try working on something simpler if you're just starting out with blending. I'm sure I don't have to tell you to get the technique down first.

>>1732973
I suppose I could give it a pass because it's a fantasy world, but those colors aren't really appealing.

The composition is pretty bad too.
Nothing reads too well, there's nothing to focus on, and I'm not sure what's happening. Nothing really looks connected. I'm having trouble determining if this is a painting/photo manipulation hybrid because of the inconsistency in rendering. The cracks for example look like pre-made textures while the mountains(?) in the back look painted.

But, you do have potential, so don't give up.

here,

thanks for the critique!

Most of it is painted, with the cracks being a plastered texture. I wanted to get it done rather than spend many more hours getting the cracks in by hand, for fear of losing interest. Lazy, I know.

What do you think is wrong with the colors? I'm genuinely curious, because I guess nothing huge really pops out to me about them. Is it just because they're unrealistic, or is there something else I should be considering?

The two colors that are most obvious in this picture are brown and purple, and brown and purple, being two neutral colors, have a hard time standing out by themselves.

Simply put: add more variation in color, but don't overdo it. It seems you're going for an orange-blue contrast, but you missed it by a bit.

Don't be afraid to use color anon

It's not conforming to the contours of the face. Beginner photo copy mistake. Values are alright but the edge work is going a bit sloppy. Easy fix you need to map your shadows or blend them a little more. Left side of Brandon face has this issue more plainly. Proportions are off usually it's the nose that throws us off. Just check out Hampton for tips on basic facial proportion and spend more time measuring.

Keep it going anon.

Thanks for the crit. By edge work do you mean where the shadows meet?

That's one of the main things I'm trying to improve at the moment. I'm using a semi-transparent brush and working one area of value into another with long, gradual transitions for shallow curves and short, blunt transitions for highly angular transitions.

And by proportions being off, do you mean the left cheek bone or do I have more problems than that?

couple of quick thoughts

Not enough definition in the face. Apart from the nasiolabial fold on the left, everything kind of smudges together.
Lips are too far forward
Nose is too far forward
like the face looks like she's got a massive underbite, and like it's all sliding forward at a weird diagonal

shittiest redline edit in the world incoming

also painting the skeletal outline of the body (not literally, do whatever you need to do to get the feeling for volume) under clothing helps. lets you understand how the fabric would behave rather than trying to figure out how the body would move under fabric

And at the same time, the midground(?) is leading the eye vertically towards nothing. although your study still has a lot of room for growth it already looks quite promising. i think you should spend some more time on it. one thing though: i think your shadows shouldn't shift towards the yellow/red/brown. leafs tend to shift into the cyan or deeper green, because of the blueish ambient light of the atmosphere. contrasting that the yellowish sunlight makes leaves and foliage shift towards that stinging-yellowish-green.

i know there's some brown rocks down there, but then you need to convey the separation more efficiently.

So, after some time of drawing only cups and pots, trying to nail down some fundamentals, I decided to do something more interesting. So I guess this is the first concept piece I am doing. I took Lilith from mythology and tried to come up with something like a temple or lair for her.
How am I doing so far? I am having some difficulties with the colons, I tried doing them in one point perspective, but they look very flat, so I tried making them in 2-point perspective. Not sure if it came out right. Any other critique?

>>1734025
You can always take a photo of yourself holding a broom or something, then learn from that. Also, just study the bones underlying the hand, learn its structure. The whole piece could use some anatomical knowledge.
>>1733671
If this is your actual 4th study, then your on a good path so far. However, I would recommend coming back to basics. Your forms are not defined and messy. Start off with studies of a cup, a plate, a teapot and so on. Pay close attention to the perspective and construction of these simple items, drawing even the parts that you do not see, ellipses and so on. They are the fundamental for what you drew here. The more you understand the fundamentals, the easier everything else will be. Also, improvement will be faster.

Also this, which is more just an experiment of an idea of how to do color. The colors were done with colored pencils, but in many tiny curves, about 3/4th of a circle each, rather than coloring homogeneously, and each block having three colors in it instead of one.

The red blocks, for example, had red, orange and purple, all centering around red.

Any thoughts on this style of coloring?

Life drawing refers to drawing from a real life reference, you're doing an anatomy study. If you've got problems drawing the face and its features, you should check out the sticky filled with all sorts of fantastic references and the like.

I'll also recommend you read through/practice out of Loomis' "Drawing the Head & Hands", because it will teach you the basics of drawing......... the heads and hands. If you don't feel like you're up to snuff with your construction overall (maybe your "style" involves mostly 2D cartoony character art) then I'll also go ahead and recommend Loomis' "Fun with a Pencil". It may look a bit silly how he draws the characters, but it's very helpful for teaching form, which gives drawings dimension. You can read PDFs of both here: http://www.alexhays.com/loomis/

You also seem to be working digitally, and if you're having problems drawing the proportions or anything of the sort correctly, give the ol' pencil and paper a shot. That's probably a medium you're more used to working with, and you're gonna feel a lot more at home practicing in your sketchbooks like that. Good start anon, you can only improve with lots of practice, so hop to it!

If you want better composition, just consider how a viewer would respond/see your work. If you wanted me to focus on the clouds then giving them the yellow instead of the bottom right would have worked etc.

i think your drawing issues are mostly whats pulling down the quality of your work. i would construct the thing in perspective, do a tight drawing that was totally correct, including plotting of shadow etc. also the form of the tires are flat on the sides, which doesnt make any sense for turning, you have to communicate the rounding of them, else they will not be believeable, so in that sense thats both a drawing and rendering mistake. else its a nice approach of doing work, with the material studies, keep going! :)

fundamentals. you have to see every object as a 3 dimensional object. you have to be precise in your drawing.
lets take this pic as an example. you see how he describes the forms with lines and how they all make sense and how the heads work as 3 dimensional objects? most of that you want see described like this in the finished pic. however, these forms are implied and it's something you have to look out for.
for example the the shape that attaches to the front wheel(the wholepart) doesn't make sense. it looks weird.

Also you can make somehting more of a focal point. I think if you made the light in the top left a bit less obvious, then put in lots of small artificial lights in the main tents in the center (or center-right) it would look cool.

Anyways, keep working on it man!

What grain filter you use anon? I love this effect. Also, the lines look a little "3D" (these light lines or red/green) how this effect is called?

If I remember correctly, it was a normal grain filter, which I used on a separate layer. Applied the filter three times, changed the mode to Multiply, and scaled it back to 20%-40% for a strong grain effect. For finished pieces, I don't usually go past 10% though.

For the 3d thing, it's chromatic aberration. Flatten the final image, and select the canvas. On the Red channel (RGB), I stretched the image very slightly. This trick is good for paintings that are meant to have a cinematic feel, or the abberation of light caused by water, and things underwater. There's also other uses, like depicting certain types of explosion and stuff, but that depends on your creativity.

For a break from serious drawing looked at a random porn image and tried to draw it looking classical / innocent / whatever. Done with photoshop & mouse.
