How would /ic/ rate Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as a learning tool for a beginning artist?
I'd like to learn to draw and everybody seems to swear by this book.

It was written by a woman.

Do the practices. Ignore the pseudoscience.

>> No.1716940

I'm still learning, but I can say that I found it ok. I just didn't like you had to have extra equipment to draw.

I switched to Keys to Drawing around half way of finishing Betty Edwards' book. You still need the extras like charcoal, markers, boards, ect. But at least it has more paper-pencil drawing practice.

working on some of the practices as we speak, though I have to improvise a bit because of lack of material.
I'll be sure to check out Keys to Drawing after I finish this one.

The practice is based on the "pseudoscience." Would be hard to ignore it, no?

Waste of time.

Betty Edwards pretty much pads the book with a lot of bullshit. In my opinion it's really not as complicated as she goes on to explain things but the exercises are great for an extreme beginner and will help build a skill set to get you to appreciate more advanced books and resources.

Barring this I would also suggest Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson.

And how is it you know what will help an extreme beginner?

i'd say yes.

i didn't really buy/read too much into the brainhalves stuff, but i think it explained well how measuring and observing really works.
it's not gonna teach you drawing from imagination though. not even a little bit. it teaches you the basics of drawing from observation.
i think if you are someone who has problems getting the features and proportions of a reference right, i'm positive that this will help you set some foundations for the future.

there may be other books that can teach it even better that i don't know of, but i don't really regreat reading it. it's also one of the few books i bought.
but then again i draw uguu animu so take that as you will.

the thing is i remember thinking i was better than everyone here when i wasn't. what i was thinking was 'in two weeks i'll be better because i'm such a harder worker and i can see the path laid out before me.'

i had miscalculated the learning curve somewhat.

although now i am better than everyone on /ic/ bar the other good people.

Why is it, almost every other week some how-to art book from the sticky gets the teen choice award? It is as if every thread about one of the books is in fact done so to validate a feeling of belongingness. Nobody wants to question what the group likes or dislike. They just want to be in sync with the group.

but i agree that book review threads are annoying and belong in the general questions thread.
