Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

In order to do something right you must first do it wrong.

Previous Thread: >>1708071

A general message to aspiring artists: Fear is the mind killer. Do not be afraid to make mistakes as no one is perfect, you will make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes, break from your comfort zones and explore new horizons.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Do these shadows make sense to anyone? I'm having trouble figuring how to light the figures in shadow, and I'm not sure if I've gone too far with the darks.

I think what I need to do is finish the dark layer, re-work the edge lights and soften the closest edge of the cast shadow, but I'm not sure. It'd be nice to get fresh eyes before I waste any more time with it.

The shadows kinda don't make any sense altogether. You have light sources being positioned behind the 2 small figures in the background, one apparently above the mob on the ground, and one supposedly cast by the flying tank onto the ground mob, and that flying tank also has a light source above.

Simplify.

How does this sound as a strategy: First, moving the light source to the setting sun off the left directly behind the tank. Then, making ambient secondary lighting from the twilight off the right, directly in front of it. Fix up some appropriate colour and stars in the sky, adjust the hues, and make sure the lighting puts focus on the tankers. Hopefully that'll do it.

That could work. I do like the coloring on the tank and those guys. The shadows on the ground mob is what needs to be thought out better. And you have that skull/robot guy breaking through the ground with a green glow whose light can be also cast on some of the other characters. To be honest, you picked a really complex scenario that's a bitch to create some sort of focus. Good luck.

As for going darker, I'd suggest against that. You already have a busy enough piece without having to make people figure out forms in deep shadow.

Interesting character designs btw.

Might I ask at what size or distance are you intending the viewer to be looking at the pic? That could give you some direction into how intricate you want to get with all the shadows on the characters.

To me the tank stands out fine, maybe lighten up the shadows on the flesh of the booze guy so his face is more easily recognized. I squint and I immediately see 3 lumps.

I did a color test of my own, to see if it would separate the characters a bit. I extended the green glow from the ground and highlighted certain portions of neighboring characters. I also took some lighter colors and gave some of the ground mob a secondary light source to give them some highlights so they stood out more. If you do use this, make sure not to put those highlights all over the place, only try to keep it to spots you want to emphasis; mainly, characters's upper bodies. I also put in a white core to the green laser's energy source to make it pop more.

Hope this helps.

I can only tell who one of those characters is.

You'd benefit greatly from a short course in caricature, where you can learn how to emphasize iconic shapes and facial features to create a strong likeness that is both recognizable and, yet, creatively adventurous.

For example: Eren (I would assume that's Eren, based on his hair) on the far right is shown. Eren, in his original design, has comparatively larger eyes to both Mikasa (the only character I can recognize) and Levi, yet you have not only drawn his eyes small, but you've made his nose bigger, and in a shape that is inconsistent with his original design.

If it weren't for you explicitly saying these characters were from Attack on Titan, I honestly would have been completely unable to recognize them.

I suppose the size and distance of a piece really isn't that important if you're remaining digital and not printing it and hanging it on a wall. It's just when one gets too noodley with details a viewer might not find the piece as easy to read if it were printed as a postcard.

For the marks I was just using the Airbrush tool in Manga Studio. I was selecting your colors, then lightening them up a tad and rendering lighter portions to give some emphasis to the characters.

Here and there I was adding white highlights that can give a plastic/metal effect depending on how you do it. I don't do alot of coloring myself so I can't give you a concrete answer on how to proceed.

People in Draw Thread could probably give you some pointers about light, but they're thinking more along the lines of scribbly concept painting and not cel shading.

Thanks. I'm still learning real proportions and how big eyes can get before they get too anime. I thought I'd get away making Eren have rounder eyes compared to the other characters with more rectangle eyes.

Cute. But she looks like she's off balance with her far foot being in front of her near foot. I made a simple adjustment by shortening her far leg so it appears to be more under the rest of her body.

Other adjustments were making the breasts more the same size, having her hand go under her shirt a bit, and moving the axe blade a bit off the hand holding it so it's not touching.

I really do despise that feet turned in thing, but I understand it's moe.

The same principle for cartoons applies, look at how Teal does his gestures and study how Vilppu's systematic approach for figure drawing is executed.

Both Artists use sequential lines which involve the mechanics of movement that allows you to "lead the eye through the figure" resulting in a free flowing abstract form.

As simple as it may seem, it is however one of the most difficult parts of learning since you must understand how to "see and feel the action" and since you are not copying the outline/shape it can be quite a frustrating experience but you must train yourself to only focus on what the figure is doing.

There are other methods of achieving gesture, there is no right or wrong way of doing it so as long as you get the action and are able to describe what a figure is doing as if you are telling a story not with words but with lines.

You compensate too much for your lack of skill when line drawing - either by using low opacity/soft brushes or by doing chicken scratching.

Draw the lines slower without duplicate strokes and think at the same time where they should go to and how they should look. Erase all accidental lines. This makes drawing much harder, but this is real drawing.

Chicken scratching occurs when there is a poor economy or an unconfident expressiveness with the lines. You scratch marks without some kind of a focus.

And that weeb shows no authority in his "sketches" You can tell he's not searching for form, or even shape for the matter. He's just scratching about until a barely-good-enough facsimile occurs. They're boring and lifeless scratches he calls studies.

Chicken scratch is clearly evident there

Thanks.

I was just trying to not lose the sensitivity of the face while doing these that is why I used low opacity in certain parts.

As for the "chicken scratching" argument, I try to not do that, if you see repeated lines that with the aim of adding weight. Either way I'm here just trying to get better at two thing I suck tremendously: lines and stylization.

This is very true, you should always be feeding yourself material for imagination.
Read a book or a doujinshi and eventually you will stumble an idea that you will want
to bring to life. Just watch it so it doesn't become procrastination.

>Where did I go wrong.
by drawing using a light color on white.
don't mimick teal, draw using a color you can see properly so you can see your shapes properly, in all their glory.

also personally i recommend using a pencil/pen like brush instead of a soft one like that. but that depends on your preferences.

same probably also goes for miku.

Blue, then Green, Pink, then Black/Brown.

>> No.1713208

>>1713196
yeah but still, you are creating the drawing while using these colors.

it's just my personal opinion but i think using colors that are TOO light will just soften your impression of the drawing as a whole.
or rather, i think you'd be able to see the major mistakes easier once you use a more solid color.
it's fine to do this if you are experienced, but i don't see the point of doing it in practice sessions.

for example: i don't know if those two lines are supposed to be clavicles, but their positioning is RIDICULOUS.
