Looks cool man! As >>1697468 says though, it doesn't look very sith lord.

I did a quick paintover, might have ruined it though :P

Some of my thoughts:
-lightsaber sells the concept more
-the robe can be a bit more black to push the evil look
-the far wing looks shoehorned in...it is very small and lame, and the shape seems to fit perfectly in the negative space between her head and staff.
-the cast shadow over her upper face is so dark, it doesn't read as a shadow. It looks like something covering her eyes and face. I made all the shadows lighter and kept it consistent. Gives a bit of a different feel, but it reads more clearly. If you want such a dark shadow on her face, then make the rest of the shadows that dark. Although it doesn't make sense for it to be so dark given the local value of her skin.
-I made the hood shoot out a bit more over her head, currently I don't think it would leave the cast shadow that appears on her face.
-The hands/arm appear very warm compared to the skin in the light, I tried bringing in a bit more of the blue colour back to them.

Catbib? The lighting and rendering seems familiar, has that RuanJia look to it. It's really nice man, don't agree with the paintover anon completely but I agree the face could do with being popped out a bit more, or maybe just the eyes. Could do the cheap glowy evil redness like in the films but I feel that'd take away from it a bit. Also the lower hand's fingers seem short, but that might just be me.

How To Crit:
>Step One: Say what is wrong with it
>Step Two: Say how it can be fixed

You seem to have missed a step. It's a pretty nice enviro anon, could do with pushing the values a bit more and some color variation too maybe since at the moment it's mainly blue vs orange. Also feels pretty cool for what looks like a desert/dry plains. Push the heat, try make the viewer thirsty just by looking at it.

It seems like an early morning light which means that the artist would not want to push the dry feeling so much. Have you ever been to a desert area? It's still pretty cool in the mornings and the light reflects that.

I do agree that values should be pushed however and everything needs shifted around for a better composition.

Well for the vast majority of illustration and concept art the goal is to have that quick read and bash the viewer over the head with the intent and focal point. This isn't fine art where you can be subtle; this is the entertainment industry where clients want things to be contrasty, tight, and very obvious. They don't want subtlety or creativity, they want what is popular and safe and they want to make damn sure the viewer knows it.

Too many darks, right? If I gave him a big, light collar and light seams down his clothing, would that fix it (separating his body from the arm in the foreground and the cave in the background), or would it it compete with the important subjects (fireball and face)?

Sort of study of today.

>> No.1698041

>>1698031
Using a photo should only be applicable if you truly understand the form of what you're looking at.

Think about it. If you are studying a complex form like a fancy table or the figure, you only get the snapshot of the one perspective on the object.

If you do not know the form of the object, in real life: you can tilt your head to see more on either side, you can get up and go look behind it, you can pick it up, study its underside etc. Real life gives you more to work with, but it can be harder for beginners to frame the object and keep it proportionate.

Photos on the other hand, give you a frame and boundaries to relate the object to(proportions). They also provide a static image to meticulously copy, dot for dot, that never move.

but i joined the group on deviant art that recruited people some weeks ago. they have setup where you have to post atleast something for a set time or you get kicked out. and you get score on what you make and stuff. And I plan on keeping up.

My problem is that I dont really know what to work on first. i cant read because I get bored to fast, so i decided to just stick to drawing alot and doing a few exercises once in a while. fuk gramr

It's not that hard to work hard. Sit down, work an hour or two a day. After a month of that it will be habit and it will be easy to add another hour a day. Keep doing that until you are working a number of hours each day.

It helps if you love the process of painting. Maybe try setting up goals such as X finished pieces in Y time. I found that since I've started getting pro work my work ethic has improved since i am held to a more rigid schedule.

Min Yum started around that age I believe. And Brad Rigney started even later. Still possible for you to make it. Just work hard and don't expect results overnight. It will take at least a few years before you are pro (don't believe the guys who say it only takes 1 or 1.5 years to be pro, it will take you closer to 5 probably).

The only way to get good is to paint. Don't care about the result, just focus on the process. If something looks wrong, fix it. Don't leave things messed up that you know the solution to. Patience is important. You probably won't be able to knock out amazing paintings quickly yet. It will take hours for it to look acceptable. That's fine. it will take years before your work is decent looking overall. Accept it. And paint. Work on good observation, and don't forget to practice drawing without reference, no matter how ugly the results. Don't bother posting anything online while you're beginning. Try to bring it to a mediocre level first. Before that point people can't comment meaningfully since you need to work on everything, and all it will do is discourage you.

well i think that is a great goal. i think it has a lot to do with brush economy and getting the base tones right the first go around.

Though from looking at your work "i follow you on tumblr" i think overrendering isn't really a concern for you as most of your work on there looks very unfished and sketches.

your work on DA such as that halo mc study you did. has a lot of issues. though you pushed the rendering aspect you failed to get the right forms and tones in the right spot and giving too much detail to certain parts that should have been played down giving it an uncanny feeling.

This study looks pretty good though i have no idea how long you put into it.

thing is, artists like Jaime Jones who can start with very loose scribbles are excellent draughtsmen. They skip the lineart process because they have the experience to do so. If a beginner tries to emulate their loose workflow, he won't be able to establish all those spacial relations, perspective, anatomy, form etc in his head without lineart.

Jaime could very easily do a great looking drawing of some forest scene with a rider on a horse, hence he can paint that scene without starting with a tight drawing. So before you start painting something loosely, ask yourself if you COULD draw it tightly if you wanted to. If the answer is no, your painting will inevitably end up looking like crap.

well i don't know man i still feel that a loose drawing "but still accurate in proportion and gesture"than letting the brush describe the proper form through tone / color and edges is the best method to approach a painting.

vs spending tons of time drawing out a perfect line drawing and than coloring it in like a coloring book approach. which is similar to how i first learned.

though it really comes down to taste. i think drawing on it't own is great. but you can't approach painting like how approach drawing.. well you can but the result tend to be rather dull.

Try doing a piece or two zoomed out (reasonably) without zooming in at all.

Issues like that usually come from jumping from detail to detail more than looking at the thing as a whole, you end up with parts better than the sum or parts not meshing with each other.

I've been having the same problems and I tend to fight them by just keeping everything in the view and zooming in to work the details only when completely, absolutely, unquestionably required and the more I do it the less I find myself requiring it.

Ideally you should get your proportions correct before you start painting, but that's just me I focus on drawing before all else. Shoulders are too wide I think that's whats really throwing everything off. Also I'm assuming you are going to bring the hair further out? Because right now it doesn't look right for how big the skull should be. Also the eyes appear a bit too large.

Other than that push your shading more, the cast shadow on the neck from the face isn't big enough or dark enough and throw down the highlight on the top of the shoulder, it will help a bit with defining your light source, also put down the highlight on the nose and the little dark crease where the lips end in the cheek.

Also, looking at the thumbs should help you notice these a bit better than looking at the images full size.

You're right about the hair, i'm painting in oil and i was wondering if i should paint the background first before working more on the hair.

>> No.1699849

>>1699843
Well there are a few other things, first off right now they are just symbols of eyes... they are very flat and you've got nothing to show us that they are actually spheres set into an eye socket. So putting in stuff like the eyelid and some more shading will help. Also you'll notice that there's actually a shadow on her eyes cast by her brow and the bottom of her eyeballs are lighter than the tops. The whole thing looks pretty drab too, you gotta breath some more life into it with some more saturated colors.

>>1699840
I'm not entirely sure but on first glance I think my idea that your painting looks like the hulk is because the facial features seem to have shrunk slightly compared to your ref, the nose and eyes are just slightly too small, but also your jaw line as it comes off the ear needs to drop lower before coming forward, i think that's the main thing you could do to help it out is to reshape the jaw along the right side of the drawing a bit and make the angle of it on the left side a little more steep. nice ref btw gonna swipe it, love me some sculpture.

I used a mirror last time, it ended up like this. I was using a photo reference this time.

Thanks, but I'm just here for art critique.

Yeah I guess I can see that a bit, but it can be an easy fix. Anything else I could work on to improve it? I'm not really done yet but I'm nearing the end for sure.

Work more on forms, proportions. Shading is a bit soft. Use some hard edged shading.

>>1700073
Okay thank you, will do. How do people work on getting rid of fuzzy/soft shading, just pure practice?

>> No.1700090

>>1700079
being confident in your forms will allow you to shade confidently. you'll know where to put shadows and won't have the uncertain pillow shading.

Reading up on drawing on the right side of the brain and god damn, reading these threads and that book is like discovering a whole new world.

Also coming from /fit/ I find it odd how helpful and experienced a lot of you are, compared to that board

Not dark on mine, assuming you wanted a half silhouetted spider, looks pretty good
