Not really.

Centering the eyes in the middle of the head is always useful. Its a great rule to stick to.

Dont draw faces exactly centered, it encourages flat drawing and hurts you early on. learn some basic face contruction and you'll improve a shit ton overnight mah nigger.

A lot of times people draw the lips centered between the nose and the chin, sometimes tatorials even tell you too. it looks better if the center is acually the bottom of the lips. It can be centered sometimes in real life but it usually looks better if the part of the face above the lips isn't too long.

Try and draw the hair as a single mass and then adding little details like individual strands later. Some people like to separate it into 4 masses like sides bangs. top, back etc but overall you'll want to simplify hair, add the light dark values and then draw in the little details like strands later.

Also, when you practice drawing the head from different angles the ears are a very very useful reference for showing where the head is facing in 3d space.

Overall just try and draw the head as an actual 3d object rather then a flat thing like you're drawing suggests. next time you draw a head try and picture in your mind an actual floating 3d head, it'll be incredibly hard at first but it's the best thing to improve; and yea, anime does all these things too.

I actually constructed the head using Loomis' ball and plane method. Here's one I did which isn't entirely centered.

Realised the face was somewhat off. Spent time reworking it. Better or worse?

Regarding Cap 2: I'm a Britfag, it's been out here for a week. Saw it yesterday, which is what prompted me to paint Cap.

It's a really solid Hollywood blockbuster. Very entertaining. Action's great. Plot moves along at a good clip and has some great twists and turns. At points it really feels like Metal Gear Solid with Cap in the place of Snake.

Also holy shit the movie version of Falcon is awesome.

I was planning on totally cheating to get the propaganda poster look after I've finished. I'll probably make all the copy and framing in Illustrator, drop in my Cap painting with an American flag and eagle and shit behind him and then mess with the colours/create some custom filters, then use an aged paper phototexture and some freehand painting on it to complete the look.

So I'll have a regular study of Cap, a propaganda poster I might slap in my portfolio if it turns out convincing enough and also this alternate version...

Jesus guys, it's all about getting a mix between the two. Soft edges, hard edges, lost edges, etc etc. Use your edges to further emphasize the forms and lighting, and to lead the eye to the focal points. Alla Prima has a whole chapter on edges from memory, but I usually advise people to look at Ruan Jia for stuff like this, that guy's edges are fantastic. HGJ's work too is excellent with his edges, pic related, and more of it is figure and portrait work than Ruan Jia's, though he goes overboard on the soft and lost edges sometimes to make the figures seem all floaty. But yeah, look up edges Firez and Anon, they can add so much to your work.

Sorry. Genuinely, I am. It's just I haven't posted on /ic/ in months after some guy started harassing me in every thread. Then he started accusing other people of being me and harassing them, so rather than let it go on I stopped posting for a while.

Chris Evans does have a pretty soft face, though. Hopefully it'll look more manly after I get some stubble and hard edges in there.

Use the lasso or circle select to make a perfect circle if you are having a hard time doing it free hand. The lighting doesnt seem to be coming from the same direction. Decide 1 lightsource then render everything based on that. The texturs on the ground looks good, you just need more of it and the correct lighting to begin with.

There's also Gnomon Workshop's website - $50 a month for unlimited access to all their videos.

Actually it's not.

That is if you are referring to Alla Prima by Richard Schmid (which is what I originally assumed you were talking about). A great book, don't get me wrong and one of my most treasured. I currently have the book placed in a glass cabinet in my atrium. However, the book is quite specific to oil painting and/or other traditional media, and thus it doesn't quite translate that well into digital. You might apply some of the ideas presented about color theory and composition to digital painintg but otherwise I don't see how that book would've helped that other anon. not to mention the fact that it's not exactly a book for absolute beginners anyway; it assumes that the reader has even a basic understanding of the medium of painting (traditional painting).

You see, sir, he's better off watching matt kohr's videos LOL. Quit being so pretentious.

You ever come up with a character early on, and then later on after you've created other characters you end up enjoying drawing them more than your first character? That's what's going on here. Ginger's more fun to draw than the kid, so I've spent all of today restructuring the plot (mostly the beginning) to get it so the story I have in mind can be told from her perspective and with her motivations in mind. Hell, at this point I'm about ready to drop Lakritz from the story entirely.

"Cheating" and using phototextures would get it done quicker yeah, but it depends on what you're doing this for. If it's for a client or deadline, go ahead. If it's to learn from, then you'll learn so so much more by doing it properly.

My crit on the piece is that the mouth looks weird, bottom lip in particular the plane is facing towards us too much. Need at least three planes there, one above, one forward, and one under the lip to push it forward. Chisel them forms out anon. You've also rendered out your shadow shapes a bit too far I think, which can lead to you losing form in certain places. Just things to keep in mind, keep at it.

I drew the feetless one first (which I actually like better) but I feel like inward facing feet don't work well with the character, like it makes her a bit too girly? Trying to express someone 'tough and confrontational'

then I tried working out the legs and feet, and while I have something there now, it doesn't look quite right, in terms of expression. Also I burnt out, and everything I draw is crap for now.

Advice? And yes, I'm aware the arms are fucked, I was planning on fixing that after resolving the legs (feel free to shit on everything else though)

First time using cubes to block out the body after circles for construction. I'm really happy with how the head turned out with that slight upward facing angle. I wanted to make him smile more but it was difficult to do with the cigar in his mouth.

The arms are shit and so is the general fabric of the coat. I rushed the cubes for the arms but I won't next time. I had a lot of fun drawing this.

The new one has it's merits, especially all the activated colors. I still much prefer the older one - it has a little more charm to it. The color palette and value changes were subtle, and the atmospheric perspective was a little more consistent. I also liked the ambiguity of the ground plane - it was a lot more ethereal.

The new one looks like it has too many deep darks, particularly the front right leg (our left).

I liked the structural solidity of the original head. It's size compared to the body was also better, as the new head feels a little narrow and the neck a little long. I also liked how the eyes and mouth were more concealed in the original.

Now that the forms of the head are a little more ambiguous, the mane stands out too much. There wasn't too much of a differential between the two beforehand, and this shows even in the thumbnail.

I also prefer the original spear over the sword in that current position. The hand was also a lot more emotive than the fist you have now.

Seconding this, try get in those gorgeous shadow shapes he has anon. Artists who have great brushstrokes almost invariably have good shape design. Look for some oil painting demos on youtube, there's some ok ones from Watt's atelier, and look how the first thing to go in is the block shadow shapes (after a reasonable line lay in). Then build it up from there. It's already really late here but I did a quick and messy paintover just to push out some of the shadow shapes more, get those in first in a piece and it cements your forms and shape design. Keep at it anon.

try doing these with a soft airbrush/blur-smudge as well to appreciate how each of those planes can be simplified to a gradient, like the sky, the water, a cliff. it's a simple transitional gradient from one colour to another and that's something missed with no-pressure full opacity.

try and think and visualise more, the original is much better and i think you should stick to it. take a step back from the tablet and think up some elements to this. who is the guy? what's his age, what's he doing there? what's where the camera is, and so on.. do that for the environment and everything and you'll come up with something great to paint out of it. the newer ones just has random bridges? or connections? the perspective is strange andi don't see their purpose. if you were a floating camera in this scene, would you really shoot it like this?

oo synchronicity , was just watching the show.

anyway your colours are a little pastelly, i did you a quick thingo more to show what i mean than as a correction.

i'm not a digital painter , but what it would be with paint would be you have too much white in the mix, which desaturates the colours.

it's okay and it's a certain look, but if you want weight or richness you need to use more pure colours. oh and the pink in the hat is way too high in value.

I think I'm done with it now.

You can try drawing a normal head and then draw over it with the stylized features.

>>1697123
Think of the nose not as a set of lines, but as a three dimensional shape. Then draw that shape onto the face. And to get that to work right you need a good understanding of the nose.

I suggest you go a step back and draw a few of the loomis "fun with a pencil" heads, the simplified features help you focus on the three dimensional thinking rather than the anatomy. You can study that later.

>>1697171
Convert your art into a transparent-to-black gradient and then put the colour in a layer underneath.

Actually, I think drawing with the mouse time from time is a really good exercise as he said. It makes you need to simplify things like edges and have a strong sense of color theory in order to blend colors and give them mass. It's like a digital version of using the palette knife

Just finished this. The proportions aren't exactly as I want them, mainly because I normally draw smaller sketches.

Anything in particular I need to work on?

Sorry mate, but it's hard to distinguish between bad and troll around here lately. Anyway, you suck.
Flat out.

But you can get better, you have good control and line quality so you're real focus should be on forms. Playing runescape right now so I'm not gonna redline it for you but I can throw together a short tl;dr tutorial in a bit.

Woah, thanks man.
I think my main problem was just drawing from different drawings from manga than just one picture from real life. That made the perspective and proportion all fucked up.

Also, just bad basic skill.

Anyway, thanks a lot. I'll keep working!

Head length vs torso length
Head width vs shoulder width
Proportions in general
His right hand is twisted. Try doing that with your hand in real life, not the sort of thing that would go well with boxing.

Read Figure Drawing for all it's Worth by Loomis.

Beat me to the punch (dohohohoho). In that guys defense there are boxing shorts that go up to the highest abdominal muscles like that.

>draw a few of the Loomis "fun with a pencil" heads
The features (nose in particuler) just seem to get cruder and more 2D. I tried to straight up copy Loomises '3-ball' nose several times but it doesn't come out right. Tried a DA tutorial as well (Nose #6). All the noses I've done for this drawing are now labeled (except the one still attached to the face).

I think there's some kind of limit of how hight the shorts can go up to and a lot of boxers just pull them right up to use the "below the belt" rule to their advantage.

Well either way his problem was mainly construction and anatomy so he should start there.

Here's what you need to do:
1) Learn perspective: I suggest going through Perspective Made Easy, and do all the exercises within.
2) Study basic forms from life, and practice drawing through the forms using your knowledge of perspective.
3) Learn construction. Use it to build up complex forms from basic forms (i.e. making an apple from a sphere, or a shoe from a box).
4) Draw noses in real life. Use a mirror if you have to. Have a strong single light source. Study the anatomy of noses as well. Proko's video is a good primer:

Last update or I'm scrapping it. I really wanted this to have a "cute" vibe, but the more I look at it, it just has that "uncanny valley" feel to it and I can't help but feel like this happens frequently when I try to make something unrealistic realistic. Other artists can do it really well and keep it looking fresh and clean, while I make it look... weird, as this Louise demonstrates.

Pic related, this artist in particular is one I really look up to because he can make anime look real yet still keep the feel of the style in his paintings. I can't do that in my work and it frustrates me beyond belief.

its because that artist is good at picking and choosing just what he wants to go into detail with in terms of values. notice how he refrains from rendering the face too much, only adding a little highlight here and there, adding another shadow here and there. then he goes way more into detail with the arm and shirt
