Majored in psychology of advertisement, was supposed to start working as a copywriter but a week before I majored I got offered this job with the android game, the pay was good so I decided I can always get a normal job if this doesn't work out.

That one was pretty cheap, it was for a family friend, so she only paid 200$. I think I should have charged more though, even though she is a friend.

I've only been working pro for a couple months though. The most I've gotten for one piece is 400$. Currently I'm working on a bulk order of 10 illustrations for 2500$ total (so 250 each, which isn't super great but considering the number of them I am doing it's not bad I guess?), and a character design (rendered to promotional finish) for 350$. Hopefully that gives some sense of stuff. I dunno, kinda low pay overall, but I literally just started working, so figure I'll work my way up.

I don't have that much control over it I guess. They come to me with a set price...the 400$ one was from Regis, then the bulk order is Alderac Entertainment Group. I took it on because it is lots of work and a fun set of assignments (almost every brief is pretty much an ideal assignment).

How do I go about getting better pay? I've only been accepting hte better paying ones, and already turned down lots of jobs that have offered like 100 or less (some drastically less, not sure what people are thinking). Seems like most places simply don't want to pay much. And I don't have a portfolio of things for concept art stuff and I can't do 3d, both of which drastically cut down on what work I can do. And then my work isn't yet at a level to get jobs from wizards or applibot or other better paying gigs. So I feel kind of stuck in this midrange price bracket...I plan on just working a ton until I get better skills and then better jobs. Brad Rigney was making below the poverty line as recently as like 2009 or 2010, and at that point he was way better than I am now.

Anyways, suggestions are welcome. I am in a bit of a sticky financial situation now, talked with my brother today, and it looks like I'll have to move in with him for a few months. So any tips on getting better pay and better work are appreciated. I'll probably be getting some more design work stuff in a month or two from the guy my gf works for because they will be doing a new game at that point. Other than that I don't have much on the horizon (also am mostly concerned with finishing all the work I have now).

You're doing it wrong bro. As someone who is (presumably) practicing art, you should realize that code is no different than learning to draw, you can't simply memorize code to learn code no more than drawing circles will let you understand 3d form.

I had over 2 years of education in Computer Science, and I can honestly say the best way I learned to program was just making shit I found cool. For example, say you want to crawl the internet for MP3s from your spotify liked list. Instead of searching the web for a tool for that, just program it in java. You'll learn a lot this way. Also try writing code on paper then sticking it in a compiler and seeing how close it is to running.

I'm not sure how much code you need to know for IT though, IT is easy modo, you basically should just be very technically well rounded and prepared to be everyone's bitch when they can't figure out how to plug in their printer.

Are these paintings 1 day jobs and there's dozens promised? otherwise you are getting ripped off by regis, it sounds like your attitude is a problem here and it's bringing you down. listen less from BS artists like rigney and ask for more money, sell yourself higher. i asked for 800 EU a piece from regis before my portfolio was anything other than a couple of studies 3 years ago, he wanted 600 and we settled at 700EU (1000$) - this was 3 day turnaround work too. It has very little to do with portfolio quality, the price you ask for dictates most of your work's value in his eyes, as long as you can then follow up with a rendered-out piece (and i know you can)

It would be hard to ask for that much extra pay from him now, and that guy has neverending supplies of work, I would seriously consider even making a new name and sending some other portfolio work asking for at least double your offer. This is why undercharging can be so lethal! i know guys working for him weekly for 3 or 4 years, making easily double their studio wage from just those freelance cards in the evenings.

>I plan on just working a ton until I get better skills and then better jobs
This is your problem, attitude problem man. You got into spectrum, while most clients don't want a quality even near your level. We cultivate such a small ego when trying to improve, especially on /ic/, but when you sell yourself you need to leave that at the door. It is also gonna frustrate you and lead to failed jobs and lost clients, if you don't have the confidence to see your work for what it is and know you can do better than a good job.
And you know I know your skills are easily wotc-worthy by now, that boat painting could be a $2000 piece with a few days more rendering.

Damn man... well first off just to correct a tiny detail, Regis only gave me one job. I showed you already the painting I did for him, and it paid me 400$. I didn't even offer an amount, he just said that was how much the pay was and I accepted it. Didn't realize it was negotiable. The other stuff in the bulk order is not through Regis, but is a separate thing entirely, but yeah it is taking me more than a day per painting.

Anyways, regarding the attitude thing, Im not even sure how to like handle it. Like when someone tells me it's a flat rate of X$, do I just counter it with a higher amount? Won't they just walk away? Are all prices negotiable? How do you present yourself in emails and stuff then? I don't think I come across as having too small an ego (though in reality I don't feel my work is really as good as you think).

And I don't even think Spectrum is that special tbh, like I never got a single job offer because of it. Still waiting to hear whether I got into this year as well, I may not have even been accepted.

At this point like, I am lucky if I even hear back from emails I send out. I've been taking whatever work is willing to pay me enough that I make more than minimum wage. I feel lost in getting good paying things. Maybe we should have a proper chat on fb or something soon if you don't mind.

>> No.1687272

>>1687269
pay is always negotiable, even if they say it is a flat rate say 'that's lower than my usual price, could you raise it to $(150%)? is that within your budget?'. As long as you are courteous and negotiate, the worst that can happen is you'll work for that first suggested price. usually you have to suggest the wage first and won't have that fallback anyway.

Spectrum is very special, maybe you need to take a good look at the very average majority of illustrators, your stuff is much better than the average. i'm obviously not convincing you, but it comes across in all your writing and even affects your art, and now it's losing you money, so this is your biggest problem, not your art quality. the guys earning the most money aren't the best artists, they are the best businessmen, guys who are full of confidence that they are good enough to ask for high wages.

yeah we can chat on facebook, i just thought anons browsing might learn something from this exchange.

As a random anon, I do appreciate hearing this exchange. Very informative stuff.

Side question: when you say that anon's boat painting needs a few more days of rendering, what does that entail exactly? Is it just a matter of zooming in and refining edges and indicating surface materials through texture, type of specular reflections, etc? What about that painting makes it look unfinished? I ask because I've consistently had a problem with polish, and I'm not 100% sure how I should be tackling that in an efficient manner. Is it possible to get a tighter finish without destroying larger brush strokes?

your local dispatch will usually have a website, and post when they're hiring for positions
then you call the place to set up an appointment to take a pretest, it's mostly listening and remembering information, and tests your ability to type accurately.

then IF you pass the test, you'll probably get invited to do a sit along, which is where you shadow a dispatcher and listen to actual calls and ask questions
THENNN if they recommend you, you get to do interviews. there's 2 interviews, a panel interview and a one on one. then you have to pass a psych eval and a background check and then boom, you're on your way to $23 / hr. with paid training.

pro tip: they like people with clerical experience, and all of the emergency calls are scripted (you just click on shit and read a script while you dispatch an ambulance.)

either a lot of people ask this or you're who i'm thinking of . it's hard to explain, you simply know it when you see it, perhaps look at more finished work on cghub. there are too many brushstrokes visible and slightly messy areas, edges could be tightened up etc, maybe a bit of detail on the clouds, and a punch of contrast, bright red softlight spotlight or something.

Thanks for elaborating on that boat painting. >Technically none?

Started drawing back in May of last year. Had never drawn before that, so it was new and kind of fun but really frustrating at the same time. Tend to be hard on myself even though I was just starting, and I still am most of the time.

Quit my job at Target because I hated everyone's creepy kindergarten teacher personalities and the way they bullshit customers in the electronics section. Mom kicked me out of the house when she found out. Moved in with my dad and started focusing more on drawing. That was the end of November.

My dad seemed fine with it until he got drunk on Superbowl night. Offered me a job at his company, but it wasn't something I felt comfortable doing and I was really starting to get interested in drawing. He called me a no talent hack, said that I'd regret everything, and when I told him "If that happens, then that's fine. It's better to just try and see" he punched me out. Packed up my stuff and was homeless for a week.

Moved in with a friend, he's fine with me living here for now.

Since then, I've been doing my best to draw 8-12 hours every day. Taking a break since I've been feeling burnt out.

Can't go to college because my high school royally fucked me and aren't backing up what their own syllabus said about what classes are considered certain kinds of credits.

Sorry for the life story, but I've been feeling kind of stressed lately.

Haven't seen my sisters in months and it feels like my family abandoned me.

Algenpfleger. He had a similar schedule as you and is now fucked with CTS.

Tehmeh said it quite well when he posted about studying efficiently. (does anyone here have a screencap of this btw? i checked mine and cant find it) The gist of what he said was that you can achieve much by "only" practicing with the pen in your hand for 2-3 hours a day. Learning to SEE and UNDERSTAND is something that you can do pretty much all the time, and is a vital ingedient in gittin gud.

So practice efficiently rather than a lot... can't I do both? I don't want to spend too much time leaning on the people around me, I don't feel good about it. The sooner I can support myself, the better.

And CTS? Carpal tunnel syndrome? Damn... is that common in artists?

>>1687736
I rarely use photoshop to draw, and that was my first time playing with color since December. I've been drawing almost entirely traditionally for several months now.

It depends on the day, but I'll typically do an hour or two of gesture drawing, study some porportions for a while, do some sketches and life studies, copy something I like from another artist for a bit, study the lineworks and stuff like that from other artists, read whatever PDF I pull up, and then do some more anatomy/proportion studies.

Sometimes I spend more time in other places, so I can't really say for sure how much I focus on what.

Yes of course you can. But as soon as you lose focus and it becomes mechanical you're not using your time as efficiently as you could be. While I have no doubt in your determination, I have doubt that you are the only human in the world who is able to stay on high alert for 12 hours at a time. Those hours many spend mindlessly grinding could be used a lot better by e.g. watching a documentary or doing something for your physical fitness which will refuel their mental one.

>is this common in artists
Very. Also, your shoulder, neck and eyes are at a serious risk when you do this kind of hours. That's cause we're not machines yet.. Just spend an hour reading up on these things, it'll be worth it.

>I've got it good, and it's making me soft.
I think that's something you should be happy for. I don't think I'm a particularly strong or tough person, I just adapt to whatever situation is given to me whether it's good or bad. Having it good isn't a bad thing if you stay a good person. It's about how you react to things around you, and not so much what you're given.

CTS is just another reason to NOT work with transfer / pen pressure opacity. the downward pushing motion is very straining for your wrist. learn to paint opaquely and/or to control pressure with the number keys.

you can still turn it on ocassionally for when you need to make that swishy stroke, but having it permanently on is a surefire way to cripple the hand that pays your rent. i speak from experience.

mmm... this sounds a lot like a witch burning to me. There's no reason not to use a tool that's available to you out of fear of carpal tunnel. If that were true, the pressure differences from pencil sketching would be exactly the same kind of stress to your wrist. People react differently to different kinds of stress. Blaming it specifically on one feature that's key to drawing is a bit overblown, whether it's from experience or not.

well ofcourse the tool doesn't magically cause CTS. but its not comparable to trad media, because you hold the pen very differently.

if you insist on using transfer all day erry day, make sure you adjust the pressure curve so that you reach 100% pressure without having to exert alot of force. i tried this, but it felt like i lacked control. so i went full opaque. havent looked back since.

Carpal Tunnel comes from congenital predisposition more than anything else.

"There is little clinical data to prove whether repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work or leisure activities can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Other disorders such as bursitis and tendonitis have been associated with repeated motions performed in the course of normal work or other activities.. Writer's cramp may also be brought on by repetitive activity." - National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

No, not at all. I would never have gotten as far as I have without the intense classes and variety of study, having projects due every 2-3 weeks in 2-3 classes a semester really forces you to work hard and learn quickly. Studying by yourself is a perfectly fine approach and works for many people, but having the amazing personal critique and peer support multiplies the effect of any effort put in.
Additionally you have a large (2,500 in my case) body of people who are all more or less in your skill range, that you see and work with on a daily basis. You will be insanely hard pressed to find anything like that anywhere else apart from a scholastic community like that.
I also have access to so many resources that have helped me get jobs or knowledge, and I have access to them for the rest of my life.
I really don't know how you can say that all you get from a BFA is networking.

to the guys talking about CTS and wrist issues.

>Algenpfleger. He had a similar schedule as you and is now fucked with CTS.
it was tendonitis, which is more akin to RSI. But these are allayed by simply gripping the pen as lightly as you can - in the words of jeff watts (i think it was?) like a passing breeze could knock it from your grip. I used to suffer from severe RSI, was on CTS medication, and this little practice completely saved my wrists. Many beginners grip their pen too hard, and how does that affect your drawing? The only difference is you're constantly tensing those muscles for no reason.

Lifting some not overly heavy weights about once in a while keeps the muscles and CNS in check to stave off any RSI, cheaper and laster-longing than a powerball I find.

Woah, woah, woah. You guys are blowing my post way out of proportion.

For one, saying "stylize" is probably the vaguest suggestion you could give anyone. Second, what I mean by my concern about the drawing is that I'd rather capture the essence of what I'm viewing instead of going into the gritty details right away, especially with such a time limit. That doesn't mean I wasn't trying to draw my subject well.
It isn't pretentious to clarify something like that. If anything, it would make it more understandable as to why it looks the way it does. I never implied that it deserved your praise, but I didn't find your criticism to be useful to me in the least.
So quit trolling over something so minimal.

Man, /ic/... I love you guys so much.

Just the way this board operates. I often forget that there are real people behind the art that gets posted. That some of you guys are younger and better, older and just starting, or what ever it is.

I don't know about anyone else, but this thread hit me a bit like a shock. I just want to get better at what I do and, as someone not surrounded by artists, you guys really keep me on my toes and motivated to keep going.

They did, but I was an idiot and disregarded a lot of the very basic lessons on color theory and shit because I was 16 and thought I was ~talented~ and didn't need to pay attention on "kiddie shit" like that.
I wasted the first two years of art school to be honest, my basics are crap.
I wish I had the motivation to study the basics and really improve but I don't.
Oh well.

Took a gap year to save money and now I barely draw anymore aside from pen gestures, it's not good. In the last art classes I was in I had gotten really depressed all of a sudden and just gave up, apologized to my professors and withdrew from school. I feel too ashamed to go back.
