I can't say that I am surprised in any way.
A friend of mine met that lady on an artists' brunch here in Germany and well.. there you have it.

I guess you can kind of say that the domestic market for and of art which is not architecture is dead since 1908 and 1907 here.

IMO you should first try ink wash and camaïeux, it is the easiest when you first start to paint.
