I have been concerned about the quality of my lines as of late, so I have been trying to get used to this "overhand grip" so as to force myself to use my shoulder more. Do you guys think this is a worthy investment?

The grip is a necessity if you're doing any large gesture drawings. If you specifically want to improve line quality, I'd also check out the Peter Han video and do the assigned exercises in their entirety:

I wish I could hold my pencil with the same grip as Vilppu

My wrist cramps up. I try a little bit each day but I feel I'm doing it wrong.

You're probably holding your pencil too tightly, or you're bending your wrist at a funny angle. Have a loose but firm grip, and use shoulder and elbow movements to make your marks.

you must be, the vilppu grip, as shown there keeps your wrist in a neutral position, do you have your drawing board set vertically, i can see how it might be a straight keeping the pencil pointing away from you on a horizontal surface.

I'm working on a Cintiq at its highest angle, so it's tilted back at maybe 20 degrees. It's fine for a bit when I'm actively concentrating, but once I get into the drawing I subconsciously change my grip and suddenly it becomes a huge strain.

That doesn't quite work on tablets. The pen detects pressure along the axis of the body, while that grip is intended for making marks with the side of your lead/charcoal stick.

Would you be able to recommend some resources on linework for tablets? I have a lot of trouble with it.

There are a few practice exercises somewhere in the ctrlpaint library. I think there were a few connect the dots pdfs.

There's also the peter han exercises I linked above. You could do the same exercises on a tablet after doing them on paper.

BULLSHIT, works just fine for me i noticed. Using a pro pen on a 13hd and i have had 0 problems with pressure.

Do people actually use this grip for detailed drawing? I always use it for gestures and blocking in ect. but when it comes down to putting down my final lines I just use the standard grip

i do because you can put your pinky on the paper to support your hand

I never said it doesn't detect pressure, only that it doesn't do it as well as it should. Applying a certain amount of force downward won't give you a consistent mark when working with a tablet because only a fraction of that force is detected by the pen. That fraction is determined by the angle the pen is at with respect to the tablet. It's basic physics and trigonometry. Plus, as the pen gets closer to parallel with the board it becomes worse at detecting nuances in your strokes. A pencil/charcoal doesn't have those same problems.

Those are the only two I was able to find. The first one is closer to what I recall, but I would try the connect the dots portion without using shift-clicks if you want to work on your hand eye coordination and line quality.

Since I can't quite find a perfect example/demonstration of what I was thinking of, my advice is to make a connect the dots assignment for yourself - having the dots at various distances apart. On a separate layer, try to freehand connect the dots with a single smooth line. You could probably make several exercise pdfs and drill through them for 5-10 minutes at the start of your day as part of your warm up. Your line quality and accuracy will improve.

You will conform to what you think is comfortable in the moment. If you want to practice the various grips. The most important thing will be to use a larger drawing pad. You'll find yourself being forced to use fattter and softer mediums like charcoal and conte. And also being forced to use the various grips just to be able to direct a line properly. You are forced to draw with your shoulder. And having more space means you don't need to worry about cropping off what you've been drawing. If you keep cropping your drawings, you need bigger drawing pads. If you need 30x40 newsprint, then thats what you have to use.

People like you are the most worst scum at the world of art has to offer then you refuse the advice of the legends like Vilppu I hope you end up homeless trying to make people to like your work because of how unappealing it is.
