Not a regular here or drawing, but I like to do some stuff from time to time.
I tried to get a "runic" feel without going all diablo II or ussing existing ones, but getting a more organic feel.
I really dislike how the image feels disbalanced and that individual letters lack cohesion, but I give it a 6/10 personally.

Study looks good man, though be aware of your value ranges. Guessing it's from a photo, and a brightly lit/taken in a studio one. As long as you're aware of that then it's fine, and maybe try a more naturally lit one for the next study?

For the head, not sure what to say. Feels a bit flat. If you've ever studied one of those planar head models then you'll know what I mean, keep in mind the sides of the head especially. Her forehead seems very flat and should be more curved, with planes at the sides, the keystone between the eyebrows should be forward a bit more, the bottom of the lips is a bit too far into the face, things like that. I like to think of it as 3D modelling; if you've ever dabbled in that you'll know how you can model something to look OK from one angle, but as soon as you rotate you see just how fucked up it is. Try rotate in your mind, or at least go down a checklist of each plane, whether it's too deep or shallow, right or left, etc. Nice work on the skin though and I dig the colours.

Another thing to check out for face planes would be Linran's sketches, the polished stuff not so much. Guy knows his forms very well and you can learn a bunch by thinking them all through. Keep it up man, see you post here a bunch and you do well to take crits and then just go back to work, not discouraged at all.

I'm not sure what to say for the composition, usually I leave more space on the canvas in front of the character's head, but this works well the other way round, means you can put more focus on the hair and such. I'd try out having him as some hunching monster, whether he's some meaty mutant or a sweet cyborgy thing is up to you.

Basically I have no idea, but the composition works for me as is. Follow the hair back and see what comes out, then maybe push the lighting more to make things pop. Really dig the work on the faces though.

No crit, sorry, but your comment makes me curious so I gotta ask.

Does your friend draw? If not you shouldn't care about their opinion on your process, they are either looking for some flaw to point out or they are ignorant themselves. If they do draw try to find out why they find use of reference so wrong, because frankly I can't think of an artist of decent skill level that hasn't done many drawings from reference. This includes every old master as well as every current artist I am aware of and those I know personally.

Well I'm learning information through repetition, I'm gradually learning the ins and outs of the figure.

I draw from pictures, which from talking to other artists isnt the best option, so life drawing would probably be your best bet.

I keep drawing my characters with big eyes, how I educate myself and break this addiction? Also, the rest of face, but specially head size and eyes. I'm reading Loomis books, but it's not helping, I started with animu/mango and created a lot of bad habits. I was about to post a pic as example, but I didn't save...

>> No.1682462

>>1682461
easiest way to break bad habits is to do some trace paintings over good photographs/art at correct proportions. It will get you used to the actual proportions of the face.

>> No.1682463

>>1682462
I'm sorry, I don't want to sound rude, but are you serious? Tracing will really help me?

>> No.1682466

>>1682463
yup, it actually does help in moderation. Obviously dont use it for actual pieces- but for study, sure its really good at helping you with proportions/textures/shapes/lighting you are unfamiliar with, just pay attention to what youre doing while you do it and it will really enhance your visual library.
Tracing isnt a replacement for skill, but it does have its place in learning about how to draw.

I kind of suck at this whole "art" thing, but I think your problem might have something to do with the balance, or lack thereof. Try to take that position. You will notice that it is impossible. This is because her center of balance is in thin air behind the forward foot, meaning that she is accelerating backwards, EXCEPT THAT her spine is bent backwards like she's leaning against a stripper's pole, which is the opposite of what your body would be naturally doing if you were, say, stopping from a run.

Also I think the forward foot is off-perspective.

I don't think there's a TRICK to drawing lips. If there is, no one ever bothered telling ME. You just gotta draw a shitton of lips and at some point you'll hopefully develop some idea of what lips are supposed to look like and how to replicate that. Grind it.

Either that or always draw everyone with something covering their mouths.

Right now it looks like you're just using two colors. Black and White. You need some grey in that. Mix the black and white, then mix what you get again, create a palette of some sort then go over the lighter areas progressively blending them into the dark.
