Stylization Thread

"Each step being broken down into even smaller steps, the impossible becomes possible." - Glenn Vilppu

Previous Thread: >>1659574

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-Ssi angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

you should be happy that there even is something like an anime general thread because a few months ago these kind of threads didnt exist. even if you dont like them, at least they are keeping most of the stuff you dont like in a single thread.

it depends. if the flow and layout is good and the story is interesting i'll probably read it either way.
but then again there are manga like 7seeds that have weird art and messy layout but i read them anyway because of the story and writing.

i guess the most important factors are that it looks reasonably professional ,at the very least in terms of typesetting and paneling, and that it is interesting in content.

Never implied that. I said, "pleasing and sensible," meaning it's got to look good and make sense. I'm sure you can spot a flaw if you search for it, you said so yourself. But let's not try to conflate major flaws with minor ones. If something sticks out like a sore thumb, it's a flaw that should be remedied. And that forearm sticks out.

you also need to realize that not all the critics are correct all the time. you need to take the criticism and try to understand it, make the best out of it.
you just need to know that if somebody complains about your art, there is likely SOME things wrong with it.

for example in this case: the guy probably wouldn't complain aboutt chickenscratches if the drawing was good.
if it comes down to it, having nice lines is important, but it's still pretty low on the list of priorities.

how cancerous they are really depends on the people in it. and right now, it's getting more cancerous by the day.

mainly because of how defensive these faggots have become.
like in my example before, the artist and critic could've continued to argue about chickenscratching, and it would never have lead to anything. because chickenscratching isn't really an issue.

people need to take critique much more vaguely (and not that literally). you just can't expect critics to solve your problems for you. they can only point you in a direction.

Rest assured these threads will continue despite a couple of Anons dedicated to disrupting these threads.

In order to learn one must be immersed in an environment where set examples are provided and be able to participate by discussing or sharing experiences on how to solve a problem.

The examples are there, look at the Sticky, look at Artists such as Greydeath and Teal line guy, deadhorseguy, and many others.

I strongly believe that these threads are necessary to provide the suitable environment especially if that environment does not exist in life as Anime is heavily stylized - instead it reflects and follows life by mimicking laws that govern proportion, perspective, forms, planes, etc.

It's up to the draftsman to translate the laws of life into the stylized genre and the same goes for any stylized genre not limited to Anime. I and hopefully the current OP are dedicated to continue creating these threads despite the disruptions.

If it is in the culture of /ic/ to disrupt, and argue over meaningless and trivial arguments so be it welcome to the new /ic/ you asked for this.

It's not all about Anatomy like /ic/ makes it seem, there are other things such as gesture that is just as equally if not more important. It's very stiff looking, and by the looks of it you seemed to be more focused on muh anatomy than anything else remember gesture comes first.

When you are drawing gesture, do not worry about bones or muscles or anatomy keep it very simple as it is an abstract form that you have to "feel" in other words there is the state of mind that is part of the process in which would directly influence your drawing.

You should figure out the pose when doing the gesture, but you didn't developed a gesture, so that's why you can't figure out what to do with the limbs.

I say that you place her right hand in the thumb and the other hand just laying in the palm, her right leg could be crossed, as the abductor muscles represent a bump that would certainly make unlikely the way she's sitting right now.(by the way, it looks like she's standing and you just drew the hand behind her, there's no signal of contact between both objects.

the extreme levels of scribbling going on here tell me you don't quite understand what you're doing or where you're going, so it's no surprise you're brickwalling on a particular element. I don't mean this aggressively, it's just simply a sign you need to alter your approach to your work.
Your fundamental construction skills are weak so when you start building your piece you're not getting enough vital information onto the page to keep progressing. Take a step back, identify all the basic shapes and elements and recompose on a new layer.

Thanks. I like the suggestion about putting her hand in the thumb, I thought about putting it right in the fingertip but I'm afraid the thumb is a bit too behind her for that .

As for the pose, you're right I should have done that beforehand but I've very little experience with those.

I was just practicing with my Note 2 during lunch drawing my hand, then I tried doing some figure drawing eventually both things lead me to this idea.

This pixiv guy has a good understanding of gestures. Note how he sketches a simple gesture first to get the flow of each girl in the scenery, then he fleshes out the details afterwards. I love how he used a compressed mosaic for the ground, very creative way to get color.

In general, I feel that you should work on gestures and basic anatomy, and scrap this one. This pose looks too stiff and confusing to look at. Highly recommend you start/continue work on life drawing so you can understand basic construction. Proko's Youtube channel has step by step processes on doing gestures.

Right now, she just looks upright stiff, right leg looks fucked up. I didn't even know she was lying down until you said so in a previous post. You have good colorwork, but work on anatomy first. Stop with stylized work for a bit, build your basics by working on gestures.

I hope you guys don't mind, I'll be pouring out some honest critique here. Part 1.

>>1661995
Overall the lines are quite stiff. Loosen up a bit. Most of your efforts seem to go to the face, instead of the overall body. Work on your gestures and volume.

>>1662019
Try zooming really out while painting. If it doesn't look like a photograph in thumbnail size, it doesn't work. Be concerned about values first, perhaps make some value studies in small sizes. Right now, the bad value placements make it look like the head is floating in darkness because the body is too dark.

>>1662362
Looks promising but it feels like the butt/hip placement could use some help. Not sure about the approach you are going for at this stage, but the composition seems really bland despite having some interesting elements in it. Play around with space.

>>1662369
This may be subjective, but it looks like a mongoloid. Sorry for my rude vocabulary, there is no nice way to put this. Have you drawn the ears? Next time try drawing the ears before covering it with hair. Right now the connection of the chin towards the back of the head doesn't seem convincing. I can't believe if you say that she actually have ears.

>>1662376
The gesture is pretty weird, and everything seems off about the work. The colors are cancerous too. More practice, nothing much I can say.

>>1662389
I'm not even going to look at that; I hate it subjectively. Props on using references, though.

>>1662402
Feels like you're going with a George Kamitani approach, or possible inspired by that. The skin color looks really dead. It looks really lumpy when you paint it over the lines. Your painting does not have the same confidence as your line work. The shadows are not convincing enough- be more bold with you shadow and dark values. The armour is reflective and yet it doesn't seem to be reflecting any color at all.

>> No.1664151

Part 2

>>1664040
There is something about the structure of the face that makes her look like a black person. Try studying skulls and different facial structures. Try to focus on your value placements. Don't be afraid to apply shadows. Right now it looks really flat, like it doesn't have shadows at all. Try applying solid-edged shadows over flat colors. If it looks right, then proceed to blend it.

>>1663948
That's the head of a man on a midget body with a girl's legs. I'm not sure if that is the intention, pardon me. The perspective of that far-off leg doesn't connect well to the body. Some of the shadows feel too stiff- the hair looks like it doesn't flow at all.

>>1663939
The entire structure of the body doesn't seem solid enough. It looks like your abs are being plastered on a flat tray, in fact the entire body looks like weird 3D-modelled object that has been plastered with a mismatching texture. Your values could also use some work. The shadows present do not convince me that the figure belongs in a believable space at all. Don't attempt to fix this any more, but please keep this in mind when working on your next piece!

>>1663830
Use a solid linework. You could always paint on top of the lines later. The thighs look like they're about to burst as well. Be brave with the shadows, right now it looks extremely flat.

>>1663740
I think it's a good start with the simple flat light and shadows, as well as the composition. The gesture feels too stiff, though. I can't make up or decide what her expression is supposed to signify. Also try having a little subtle creases along the body costume, to reinforce the fact that it is hugging the figure.

>>1663574
There is no confidence in this at all. Some good manga artists start their drawings with a tone of scribbly lines, but they all contribute to the gesture and flow of the piece. Yours is trying to do that, but your understanding of anatomy and form and structure is too limited to do that. Study more gestures.

>>1663553
Don't even try to finish it. Always start with the initial overall gesture before adding details. If you attempt to add the limbs now, it's only going to turn out stiff, judging from the way the limbs are fading off.

>>1663523
A simple, good start. Work more on the subtle curves and gesture. I know it is supposed to be subtle, but I'm not convinced that there are muscles beneath the figure. I'm not sure if this intends to be poses for a character sheet or just a study.

>>1663495
The proportions and gesture seems off. The colors are cancerous as well- from a distance it looks like a cheesy, discoloured boutique of flowers. It feels like there is no concept of lighting in this world you drew.

>>1663459
"Soft shading" doesn't necessarily mean using soft brushes all the way. You could use hard brushes and then erase the stroke/shape with a soft brush for that ultimate soft-yet-solid impression. You could also try masking the figure, then using a bigger soft brush to render the shadows and stuff.

>>1663279
The first and foremost thing you should consider when painting environments is the simple perspective. Think about how one element relates/connects to another through the perspective. That's a nice bush, but no good environment starts with a well-rendered object over a white background. Paint the overall composition first!

I'm too tired for any further critique. ;)

Why is there always just one or two or no good drawfags at all in these threads? Are these threads for the lowest common denominator? Shitty anime doodling kids and that one washed up semi-decent but still anime "artist" with no future or career in art seem to be all you find here.

Why does this thread always get so worked up over nothing? Either critique and leave it at that or don't say anything rather than passive-aggressively attacking someone. This is why most of the threads have more shitposting/arguments than actual art and crit.

To be fair he DID correct that there was proper context for the hazmat suit. Yes, it caused some problems initially, but it's sorted out now, right? I think he was just specifically asking for technical critique on that particular panel.

I am having a lot of trouble trying to copy a character.
My basic goal is to be able to draw the character in a bunch of scene's and poses. So I figure I will need to draw the base pose and figure out how to get every detail exact on her. I keep making it feel disproportioned and too thin of legs/arms, too tall, face seems emotionless, and hair is flat. I can't seem to capture the character in my drawing. Can anyone give me advice?

I feel like even if I can manage to get the lines in the right place, with the right angle, I can't get the curves exactly right, or the besier curve or whatever. And my line weights are shit. But basically everything just end up a bit off making it seem like shit.

>> No.1667159

>>1665551
Proportions are wrong.

The only way you're going to get it correct is if you keep looking at your reference. It seems like you only glance at the ref for a second, and spend the rest 90% of the time trying to make a pretty curve.

Look at the lines, see where it is diagonally, laterally and horizontally in relation to other lines.
