Scopes are occasionally used on handguns as tools for technique improvement by magnifying the small movements (sway) that occur to the user. Furthermore, scoped handguns aren't held in a manner that would allow someone to injure themselves in the way you described with the scope in question, unless the shooter is maybe using a .600 NE, at which point you have other things to worry about. Would a carbine or rifle be infinitely more preferable for practically engaging targets at range? Of course. But is this fantastical subject matter that also allows the creator of work to exercise flexibility over how realism is portrayed? Yes.

It reallllly doesn't take much effort to just google this yourself and see people do use scopes on handguns for reasons >>1655189 explained.
