Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Each step being broken down into even smaller steps, the impossible becomes possible." - Glenn Vilppu

Previous Thread: >>1644597

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Okay guys, is me again... the tumblr guy... Anyways, what I really want to draw -at least right now- is girls in stockings, I want them to be flat chasted/small breast. My concern is, do you think people will stop following me or more people will follow? So far I've been drawing mostly figure drawing from Pixelovely and some digital sketches of various stuff, and the two posts that get more re-blogs are a drawing heads tutorial and some ink sketches of feet/shoes.

I know it sounds kind of stupid but I don't want to loose followers.

Although now that I think of it, the last drawing got 15 notes overnight and most of that people was people that followed me already.

Most of the time, if you focus on one particular thing rather than drawing whatever you want or your own original content, your followers will reflect that. People on tumblr are OBSESSED with fandom shit. It's pretty fucking retarded. An easy way to get followers is to pander to fandoms though, obviously.

I occasionally draw some semi-loli stuff, like the demon chick from an earlier thread. Will this get me banned from tumblr if I post it there? It's just a small part of what I draw, so I'm wondering if I should just avoid it entirely, in case I ever reach some level of popularity. I suppose it's not good to be associated with that stuff.

what career? I start the day with jacking off, watch anime, jack off, sleep, rinse repeat.

You know how great it is not doing anything with your life? I used to want to be an artist, then I realized I was shit, that it would take tons of effort, and even after I got really good I would never make a dime. The best feeling in life comes from quitting, its real liberation.

The thing is I actually spent like 3 months studying loomis and anatomy, and got really decent at constructing forms. as soon as I got good this all totally lost any value for me. there was no point. I was never going to need to do this to eat anyway so why do I care? its not like there isnt an abundance of loli, touhou etc doujins out there to spank to for free. drawing is as pointless as anything else. even you fags to cling to it stubbornly are never going to make anything out of it. most of you wont even get self esteem out of it which you all badly need.

Here. I've made a quick 3D biped and boxes. I'd recommend drawing geometrical objects with good perspectives (like architect drawings) in order to have some sense of space. And then doing life drawings from photographs or people in buses and trains will help you with how human bodies look in a space. You don't have to stick to realistic drawings when you're not doing life drawings but, I think, starting from the original (actual human bodies) and then having alternation is a better idea.

Not that guy, but that's a bunch of horseshit.
It's not about what is used to draw the nose, it's what it represents. A dot is just a dot. A properly drawn line can show the shape of the nose and even provide depth.
The comparison to Charlie Brown is terrible, because you're talking about a comic strip.

I'm personally not a big fan of dot noses, because it greatly reduces the variety of faces and detail of a person's style, and is usually a result of adopting a generic style or just sheer laziness.
It can work in certain styles, particularly more simplistic, comedic works, but overall it's just a shining example of the ever decreasing variety and quality of anime.

I thought like you, sort of, about the lazyness part but after having that argument with Anon from /a/ I came to the conclusion that the "dot" is used as a landmark, after all the proportions of a loli is to replicate that of a child.

Take the nose of an infant into consideration, the nose is shaped like a snorkel and is that way in order to successfully breastfeed while properly breathing; this is why we find Animu so cute because it is mimicking those kinds of proportions that we find cute.

I use the dot as more of a landmark now, the bottom of the nose that is aligned with the bottom of the ear or a shadow in order to help make the face adorable but this is just my opinion.

in fact it's the exactly same thing.

i think you have too much of an kneejerk reaction to "dot noses".

>The comparison to Charlie Brown is terrible, because you're talking about a comic strip.

There was a Charlie Brown TV series and several specials. He still had the same C nose. Conversely, most anime are based on manga, so the comparison is valid.

>A dot is just a dot. A properly drawn line can show the shape of the nose and even provide depth.

When that "dot" is in motion, it can also provide depth.

Look, I don't care for dot noses either, but style is style. Why focus on just the nose, but ignore the greater complexity in design in just about every other aspect? If that's lazy, why not compare how the eyes are drawn to the typical Western cartoon nowadays? Those use dots for eyes, and often don't even draw noses.

It's just what they like. It's just what works, what's appealing.

There is so much wrong about what you said.
The goal of drawing anime isn't just to draw cute stuff. Furthermore, drawing the nose as a dot doesn't make anything more or less cute.

I draw animu stuff, and I usually draw simple noses, but I never do the dot thing. What I use to draw it, depends on the angle of the head. It might be a line, or a bump with a dot for the nostril. But a dot just leaves you with too little information.

The best evidence that anime has devolved and that the style is now too simple, is the fact that the japs are having such a ridiculously hard to replicating the style in 3D. If you look at most anime figures or games, the faces look fucked up from many angles, and this is because what they draw doesn't actually represent a figure that could exist in real life. The nose usually ends up looking like the pointy end of a snout, and they have no idea how to connect the bottom of the jaw to the neck, because they're either missing a jawline or just flat out makes the jaw too small.

It does matter. Do you really not understand that the style of any drawn product has an impact on the story? Have you never noticed how comedic shows usually have simpler styles, and more serious shows have more realistic or detailed styles?

Simpler styles usually imply a lighter type of show.
A comic strip is basically a four panel joke. They're not meant to have deep characterization or storylines, and the styles are simplistic and abstract as a result.

Here is the basic construction to a drawing of Richard III I'm working on. I find it hard to finish my work because adding details to poor construction is like putting sprinkles on shit.

Where do you think I'm going wrong? Maybe your work was at this stage once. If it just needs more practice I'm working at it.

Should I be doing gestures if I'm ass? Is one minute for each gesture too short for me to get everything right at my skill level. Should I just not worry about time and try to get them accurate as possible.

>> No.1649312

>>1649307

Doing gestures is one of the many things you should be doing if you're ass. It's training your eye to see motion/expression in the human form and that's a good thing.

30 - 60 sec gestures are about catching the flow and expression of the pose. As you allow yourself more time in your gestures, that's when you should start adding landmarks.

Accuracy comes the more you do it as you get used to the process and your brain processes the composition/flow of the pose faster.

Just keep at it and you'll get better. Just remember when you aren't doing gestures to also do anatomy studies to understand how things work and connect under the skin.

Gesture is probably the most difficult to understand as there is the factor of the state of mind the Artist is in.

When I first tried to find gesture from the figure it was very frustrating and I constantly had to fight not copying the contours or the outline; the gesture in itself is an abstract form that should read an action rather than something solid.

The solidity comes after you capture the gesture when you begin to describe forms and what they are doing in space, think of it this way try and imagine the flow of fluid through a figure much like a stream or a river.

Use the mechanics of transitional lines, these lines "jump from one to another" which in return "leads the eye" and not only that but the mechanics in itself suggest movement and free flow.

That's essentially it, you're not thinking about anatomy or bone structure however there is one exception - proportions. As you are analyzing the figure be conscious about how one thing is in relation to another, and depending on the pose how parts alight with each other. For example, the size of the hand in relation to the face or the location of the belly button and how the crotch seems to be in line with the bottom of the chin sometimes.

Arms too long, torso too wide.

Pose is very 'fly-swatted'. You need a better gesture to convey a stronger sense of movement. Is he falling downward or is he rising? Is he moving forward, and if so how fast. What was he doing a few frames before this moment, what will he be doing a few frames after?

I suggest finding references for the type of flying kick you want to show. Finding something in video format would be most informative - find which key frames best convey the action as a whole. Can you further exaggerate said frame to better show movement? I'd look for martial arts videos, but well choreographed action movies might also work. You might also find something useful in dance videos as well (ballet, musicals, etc).
