I can confirm this. My Art Fund 2D class was pretty much nothing but abstract expressionism, cubism, and collage (TONS of collage). The professor literally complained if you brought in anything resembling a standard figure/portrait or still life because apparently academic art is "cliche".

Although, my school does offer Figure Drawing, which is one of the best courses I've ever taken.

I took a couple community college drawing classes that were pretty good. The professor actually provided useful critique and if nothing else its a good way of forcing yourself to draw more. Supposedly the community college in my town was one of the best in California (whatever that means), so I assume it just depends on where you are.
