Evening, /ic/. I would appreciate some anatomical aid on this one, if you guys would be so kind. It is a, alien race I am designing for a GURPS roleplaying campaign. I am getting homeblind (is that the correct term?) and can't quite figure out what is bugging me with the leg.

I apologize for the large size of the picture.

You be the judge. If you're learning something by polishing, continue polishing. If you aren't really learning anything new, then don't.

If there's anything wrong with a piece, there's no point in polishing until all mistakes are corrected.

Generally speaking, you'll learn a lot more by powering through dozens of pieces, instead of invested that time on one piece - especially in the beginner stages. Eventually you reach a point where you need to learn how to polish, but that isn't particularly difficult if you have all your foundational skills in place.

Your value control needs a lot of work. You tend to go way too dark on a lot of the eyes.

The cupid study's eyes are too 'anime', you aren't observing what's there carefully enough. Those white specular lines also aren't true to the source.

Ironically, I started this >>1646869 to help me out with hair. The main thing I learned is that you really do have to spend the time on each strand, or, at least, each grouping of strands. Also, blocking in a starting value for an area seems to kill the effect. Working your way up from nothing gives a much more natural look. I clearly didn't do that successfully for the hair right behind the neck, and it looks like garbage because of it. It also seems to really help if your pencil/charcoal/whatever strokes go in the direction of the hair flow (root of hair strand to tip). I'm not a trained individual, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. There may be a wildly different technique that is the correct way of doing this.

2. Create a new layer over it and paint it. use the paint to hide the lines a bit.

Color is pretty complex. It helps to know color theory, the science of color and light, and have a wealth of experience painting from life to fall back on.

For some about the theory and a lot about the science, check out these two links:
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/

As for this picture, in simplest terms you want to think about color temperature, and the local color of the object you're painting:

The primary light source is cool, so areas that are hit by it will look cooler than their surroundings. You have some specular reflections in there too, which strongly carry the color of the light source.

Planes that aren't hit by the primary light source are mainly affected by the local color of the object, and ambient light sources.

The reds you marked on the middle of her back are due to bounce light from her lower back. The saturation of those shadows increases because they are effectively being lit by light that matches its local color.

The red you see in her armpit is due to subsurface scattering, though it's been exaggerated for aesthetic reasons. Because skin is somewhat translucent, some light pierces the skin, bounces around picking up the local color in there (red), and shows through on the other end. It's the same reason why ears and fingers appear redder when they're backlit by a strong light source.

You can never know if your colors are perfectly accurate unless you're painting from life. When you have pieces from imagination, you can make informed decisions with regards to color, but a lot of it is just making it look believable. Study color from life (not photos), and from master paintings.

I still working on learning lighting, also I need to study animal anatomy.

Try to sit like person on your picture - it's awkward as fuck.
More anatomy - right arm is too long (compare it with left arm) and elbow looks weird. Also put more effort into drawing knees.
Left leg (his right) is too short - did you shortened it just because you run out of space? Next time make more sketches and construction before rendering.
Stop drawing people with masks - if you want to progress as an artist then you have to learn how to draw faces.
About wrinkles - I can recommend "Famous Artist Course" - you probably will find it linked somewhere in sticky, or on pirate bay, I don't remember right now.
And don't make so fat outlines - it makes picture more flat.

I'm trying to learn to paint with Photoshop but it feels like I have to press way too hard to get 100% opacity when I set it to pen pressure. My tablet settings are already on the softer side, and when I set it even softer the opacity jumps between very light to 100% really quickly, it's difficult to control. Is this normal?

How do you get over thinking of yourself as a beginner? I do a whole lot of bullshit self deprecation when it comes to art. I know I should practice more (with things such as life, lighting, perspective, etc. Because from my understanding you need to understand the real version of something before you can alter it in any way; especially when speaking about anime style or certain game art styles where the human form is altered greatly) to reach my end goal of drawing in my own anime style or game art. I just lack the motivation to draw anymore cause I feel I am such a beginner with art and upset with the lack of progress I can make. I don't know maybe I just sound like a whiny anime/gamer fag that want s to draw well but i think maybe someone can help me? Thanks for your time sorry for the ramble.

Looks like you tend to make the head too tall. Try to account for that bias. Look at the ratio of width to height for the red boxes in pic related.

In #3, it looks like you painted the eyes too close together. You also don't have the features wrap around the head like a cylinder (corner of jaw is too low, lips are flat instead of wrapping around the tooth cylinder). Constructing with a box in perspective would also help line up the jaw correctly.

>> No.1648180

>>1648169
Pay attention to major planes and the direction of the light source - you have the region under the lips lit when they should mostly be in shadow. I'd do a few painting studies of an Asaro head to get a better grasp of those planes. Don't forget to apply what you learn from that and Hampton to portrait drawings from life and photo.

hi /ic/.
i know this is horrifically bad. i know there's not much to critique. I know I have a lot to learn. but this is my third attempt over the course of two or three days to make this "painting", and I'm going to make a fourth attempt after I get up and maybe take a walk or something, because I'm beginning to feel physically ill looking at it.

what I want to know is how to block in values, and more in general about how one approaches starting a painting after the initial drawing. I can see the obvious color differences now that i've put it next to a photo i took of my subject, but it's not so obvious otherwise, and I want to understand how one internalizes a concept of both the colors of objects they're seeing and the light/dark areas that define their form, and process them separately rather than just copying the colors you're seeing.

tl;dr can someone with more experience tell me if I'm at a skill level where there's anything for me to get out of this? please be honest, I can take it.

awful ssincma

The bridge of the nose begins too low, the eye is too far forward, the corner of the mouth too far back, top of the head too rounded.

The tilt of the upper eyelid seems too extreme. The eyelids have thickness and should be further forward than the eyeball.

Do more studies of the head in profile. Line drawing and construction will suffice - you don't need to paint. Study the skull as well, particularly it's proportions, major planes, and landmarks. Vilppu's head anatomy videos cover it well.
