When i was a scrub like you op. i found ps to be way to hard to learn. like i felt it had potenital but it was overwhelming. i stuck to programs like coral painter 11 for the first few months.

i than decided to swith to photoshop. "corel crashed a fuckton" my skill instantly dropped below that of what i was producing in the other program.

suggestions are this.

>learn layers

Paint Tool SAI is pretty awesome, I used to think it was just for line-work heavy/anime-ish pieces but I've gotten good results with it, to the point I've almost moved on from my 1st art program: ArtRage

I also don't do anything fancy, I use default brushes and very few layers.

I tried PS back when I started but I found it way too cumbersome. However, I'm aware that I should learn to use it some day.

ITT: Weeaboos defending the baby's first anime-drawing software and Photoshop fags falling for the bait.
Fun fact: If you can't get along with a drawing software it doesn't mean it's shit. Defending the other software you're biased on (even if it has less features or it's the most popular tool for drawing generic animu grils) doesn't make it any better either.

There are legitimate reasons to stick with digital rather than physical mediums. Chief among them is how expensive paint can be. The only barrier to entry on digital is the cost of a tablet and you're good to go for the next decade. Physical painting has so much overhead that digital is a much more economical alternative.

Though I do respect the higher learning curve and the dedication that it takes to get good at 'real' painting when there are so many tricks and shortcuts that people use on digital

Sai's good for being such a lightweight program.

Photoshop is however far superior and produces much better results. You just need to adjust to the fact that different programs have different workflows.

You'd never be able to use Sai in a professional capacity due to the limitations of it being a raster-only program. The most use it sees in the professional sphere is for linework that's then imported to Photoshop to be painted over.

But when it comes to the main part of painting the image there are artists who use alternatives, Painter especially, for most of the actual process. Then they use Photoshop for anything Painter can't do.

Loving all the posts that ask for proof about showing something done in SAI that looks better than something done in Photoshop. Shows how many retards there are. Photoshop and SAI are TOOLS an artist uses. The final product more often than not does not depend on the TOOL, it depends on the artist and how good he is with said tool.

Someone who has been working with Photoshop for 5+ years and only a year on SAI can probably end up doing a better job (same piece) with Photoshop because he has more experience with it. As far as blending colors, SAI has a really easy way to do it and many amateur artist might prefer SAI over Photoshop because of it. This might also explain why the huge amount of amateur art done in SAI that just looks bad. Photoshop is more similar to painting in that you have to go over both colors to get a smooth transition between colors. When you manually have to work on something, you usually have more control over it instead of just depending on the program to do it for you.

That being said, I hate SAI's interface and even though you can change the hotkeys around, and it has a few of the basic functions that photoshop has, the program still feels somewhat alien to me. I really do enjoy the line corrector thing it has especially when I am doing linework for an anime related picture. Havent really used SAI to paint that much but I once tried creating something in a semi-realistic style and I couldn't get the skin to actually look like skin, something which I can do easily by using Photoshop.
