Heh, that would explain the wobbliness of the lines. Do you have a scanner? If you want an outline, how about trying to ink the old fashioned way and then scan the image? Or save enough money to buy a tablet (you can't ctrl+z in real life anyway)

Other than that... keep going, have fun, study some anatomy (life drawing and what not) and read about colours and light.

i think compositionally it's actually fairly good. there is some interesting diagonals suggesting movement and the contrasty value massing works. honestly composition is very good imo.

you see alot of thematically similar images, rendered much much better that have a way worse composition. so yeah imo you did everything right in that aspect. im serious.

background isn't distracting, it's interesting. it works. i'm starting to blabber.

I'm a retard, so take this with a pinch of salt.

Generally you want thicker lines for outlines and also to differentiate things in the foreground, so say your chick was pointing at the viewer, you'd outline her hand to make it "pop" from the body.

If you're going for a ligne claire kind of style with consistent line width just one or two fineliners should do. However you could also also look into pens that give variable thickness lines to enable you to do a more painterly kind of linework, using lost-and-found outlines to suggest highlights and so on. Possibly a good-quality marker or brush-pen could do this, but I'm no expert.

>> No.1603017

>>1603014
For a start you should probably practicing from observation not out of your imagination at this point. people like to use sculptures to study tone and value, I'm guessing because it is uniform in colour and texture but has complex shapes, but you could even start out doing simple spheres and cubes.

I like it, it's very generic for the style you're obviously going for but it's cool.

With these kind of drawings imo it only really works if you have great composition and lots of detail going on, it's not really a style that works with having one character standing in a funny pose with not a lot else happening.

Looks good anon, I like it. If I were to add anything, I'd say keep the light source in mind a little more carefully, and play around with transparency. You could give the eyes a really cool effect, and the skin and lips as well, if you could get them to read as semi-transparent.

Also some controlled variety in edges might help. Hide some things with a bit of a blurred edge or less detail but make some that you want to be important really sharp.

From reference or imagination? If you have the ref you should post it because it'll be easier to identify what you're having problems seeing; if it's from imagination. . . Get a reference.
Here's a quick paintover to show you how you could improve a bit. I think it's mostly just value problems albeit some anatomy issues. Don't focus on the specifics of eyeball, nostril, eyebrow, etc. Focus on values and edges. As far as anatomy issues go I'm sure there are better anatomy gurus on /ic/ than myself and they could easily chime in.

move that whole ship and hallway combo over to the left side of the canvas, then give the ship something to actually go towards, and put the city around it to SUPPORT IT. no inch of a canvas should be superfluous, everything should be supporting the whole.

In situations like this, it's best to get multiple reference photos of the model, from different lighting and different vantage points. You need to be able to piece together what she looks like with minimal distortion from the camera lens. Multiple references would also allow you to create something that is unique, and not derivative of a single photograph.

That's just my thoughts on the matter though. If you're comfortable turning a suboptimal photograph into a painting, and that's what the client wants, then so be it.

Here is a screen grab however. i think it came out a lot better than my previous attempts at plein air.

i need to do more from different places. my front porch view is getting a bit boring.

Another question. Im sorta using anons issue as a practice for myself, since i have composition planing issues and tend to lose focus on the pictures prioritys alot.

Now please bear with me, this might be some basic stuff im missing.

Would you say that anon is indecisive whether he wants to show the ship, the hangar or the city? Like its everything at once. Im trying to follow your suggestion of moving everything to the right, while keeping the angle and aproximate sizes, and i dont think its possible to show the same scene if you switch it to the left. As in both the city, the hangar and the ship. Youd have to either sacrifice the elaborate city view or the closeup of the ship and the hangar bay. Now either my imaginations is completely tense and cannot think outside of the box, or you have to switch perspectives on something and choose prioritys. Im really at a loss here.

The best i could come up with with all of them is this. But the building is from a diffrent perspective though. I notice i run into such issues a lot and would like to narrow down what is the issue. Is it the poor prioritising of what i want to show ( and i have to come to terms that i cant show everything and have to make sacrifices) or am is my spacial imagination so poor that im just bad at solving compositional puzzles. I hope any of this makes sense.

This is common, the more you study and understand things visually the more accurate your minds eye will be and you'll be able to visualise things more as an actual composition on a canvas rather than a vague idea of what would look kind of cool.

Nope, you need to study the fundamentals before anything, I started out doing a load of painting studies because I thought that was just what I should be doing, I was wrong. Doing that will make you pretty good at copying but liek you said you will have trouble doing anything from imagination because you won't know where to start.

Start out with gesture, anatomy, value, anatomy etc. the basic stuff. I would go into more detail but I'm about to go to sleep. The important thing though is to start with the fundamentals and don't be impatient.

Why don't you do something in between? Find a reference and apply it in a novel way. Draw the fire hydrant down the street, but instead turn it into armor, or a robot, or a building. Find a bird and make it an amphibian. Look up to the clouds and draw what images appear to you.

If you don't practice creativity and invention, you'll never get better at it. To make sure you're actually adding to your visual library, try to draw/paint from imagination what you recently did a study of.

I can construct things with lines and stuff and make okay-ish drawings but painting, blocking in and using colors to create forms? Absolutely no idea how to approach the subject, hence I try to figure how others do it and maybe that helps me to find an approach that works for me

I've done one piece from life and it was pretty awkward. I need a regular lamp and some easy subjects before I can do more. I asked about master studies but people told me that it's better to do life studies first. It was way different than photo studies, even though having done a lot of photo studies helped

The photo studies I've done have been b&w because I don't know much of anything about colors. I've read about color theory but I don't feel like I see colors correctly enough to use them myself so I've been focusing on values and angles

>I need a regular lamp and some easy subjects before I can do more.
You should do a lot more. Even painting without access to a dedicated lamp is better than not painting. If you're in a room with a single light source (or sunlight), that will suffice. You should be able to pick up a cheap desk lamp or stand lamp for $10 from target or amazon if you're in the US.

Painting from life will teach you critical thinking skills. Painting from a photo is too easy to enter autopilot and not really think about the values you're placing and why they have the qualities that they do.

I'm not trying to sound dickish, but you say you've gotten enough of the basics when at the same time you only have one life painting under your belt. Chances are you don't actually have as strong a grasp over the basics as you think you do. It's hard to say without seeing your work, but you likely don't have a strong enough grasp over perspective, forms, major planes, and light. When all of those are in place, painting from imagination should be much more approachable.

Well I'm not aiming to be the best rembrandt or anything but for the scope I'm aiming I feel that my fundamentals are good enough. I can draw pretty much what I want and sketch it out sufficiently to make an okay drawing. Not a perfect one but fair enough for my goals. When it comes to painting I'm a total pleb and don't know what the fuck I'm supposed to be doing

My current lamp lits the room via dim reflected light from the roof so it's not very ideal for a beginner trying to get into life painting. Also I lack all the simple subject matters like apples and whatnot. Even the cutlery I got is some artsy twisted piece of metal. I'm not in US and I can barely afford my daily noodles but I think can figure this part out somehow. I feel the main issue is that I don't know how to approach the subject matter

Take this first one I made for example >>1599967
I started by blocking in the general shape of the table, then added shadow to the edge of it and blocked the shape of the extension cord thingy. Fiddled around with the colors and shadows for a few hours and then added the figurine on top, which turned out to be slightly smaller than intended and the whole piece is more light than in real life but that might be just my eyes getting used to the bright light from the screen.

I don't feel like my approach worked out too well as I can't really apply it to things with more complexity and smaller details. The angle between the cord and the table is off, nothing has texture and there's way too little contrast in general. I've been doing some drawings from imagination since then, still kinda hesitant to dip back into life drawing without the 'baby's first still life' setup with strong directional light and apples

Long post, I know

It seems like two things will help you the most: construction and light.

By construction, I'm referring to breaking down complex forms into simple forms, and building complex forms from simple forms. There's a few good videos on that from ctrlpaint:
http://ctrlpaint.com/videos/constructive-form-pt-1
http://ctrlpaint.com/videos/constructive-form-pt-1-5
http://ctrlpaint.com/videos/constructive-form-pt-2
I'd check out the rest of the videos in the library. Chances are Matt covered areas that you're having problems with, and potential solutions to those problems.

When you invent forms through a thorough construction, you'll have a stronger understanding of their major planes. The angle of the major planes with respect to the light source will play a large role in their value. If you don't know what values to use when painting, think about the 3D space of the scene you're envisioning.

Which leads me to light: It'll help you a lot to have a general grasp on how light works, so that you can make predictions of what forms should look like under various lighting conditions. Here's a great primer on light, and many other topics. It's short, easy to read, and densely packed with material:
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm

Knowledge of certain painting/drawing techniques would also help you. When painting an object (in front of you or from imagination), it's helpful to divide the object into 2 value masses: light and shadow. You would then refine the shadows so that it contains 2-3 values, and refine the lights so that it contains 2-3 values. Soften edges between value shapes as needed. These two links contain related demos, the first showing division of values, and the second showing opaque painting followed by selective edge softening (posts by bumskee):

1. You need to think out a path for the wiever to follow. Let's say its ship (first focal point) ---hallway---> something in the hallway(second focal point).

2. Yes, you have to sacrifice bringing viewers attention to the city. It's just a background and should give a hint, almost a subliminal message about the world your illustration is set in.

3.Now the path is like:

ship(a big focal point) -> hallway with thos arrows(eye spends very little time here, because there's almost nothing of interest) -> city(because it's bright)

You should also notice how after contemplating the ship your eye doesnt really know which direction to go in, but finally chooses to go to the hallway, because the ship isheading is in that direction.

4. How to make everything perfect:

- Add a detailed, high-contrast focal point in the hallway. Some fluorescent lamps sheding light on a group of scientists and vehicles should do.

- Use rythmic lines both on the ship and the background to lead the eye towards your second focal point. THe ship looks very static now, like if it's levitating.

-Your edge control is heavily fucked in places, but that's something to master.

-your blurred cityscape doesn't really read as a blurred cityscape.
