Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Drawing is very closely related to the other creative arts, all of which are outcroppings of a desire to express individual emotion, to make the other fellow conscious of our inner feelings" - Andrew Loomis

Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry!

A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it!

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

If you want to draw people of different ethnicity, then you need to look at and study people of different ethnicity.

Your understanding of construction may be too rigid. You should not be copying the Loomis method by rote and awkwardly fitting it over something that doesn't fit. Instead, understand why Loomis uses the construction lines he uses (it's all related to simplification, proportions, balance, symmetry, consistency in rotation, etc), and apply that approach to the shapes and proportions you actually want to draw.

Additionally, it tends to be very difficult to mix solid black line work of that sort with painterly coloring. It requires a lot of precision, and inked lines naturally take away from the edge variety of a painterly approach. Looser line work or brushed lines may be a better fit for you.

In any case, you may want to spend more time on your drawing skills than coloring at this point.

When should I start drawing anime? How long do I have to do the loomis before I am ready? I wish I could make people on /a/ happy with my fanart. But right now all I can draw is stickmen. I have to say learning to draw requires quite some willpower. Because after reading a 300 page long book with tons of excersizes which may take you a few months you will still not be able to draw anything worthwhile. Quite demotivating.

>> No.1598825

>Will power

But that's all it takes. You don't HAVE to learn how to draw a real face however you do need to learn what makes up one with the basic forms and fundamentals. Use everything Loomis has to teach you and incorporate that in your drawings; you draw with knowledge and by observing life.

There is no sugar coating anything here on /ic/ and me personally my greatest obstacle was myself at times where I feel burnt out but just draw through it and eventually you'll learn to like it.

>> No.1598826

You can do it whenever you want, as long as you are continually studying. It's easy to just draw exclusively anime bodies, and it feels good, and there are a lot of artists that get by without improving their anatomy at all. It really comes down to whether you will keep raising your standards. I think most people agree that it is apparent when artists have anatomical knowledge, even if they are drawing cartoons.

The hair seems to be flying ahead of the head.

The part of the hair doesn't follow the form of the skull. It looks like a comb-over. Hair strands should not go towards the ear, but be pushed back behind it.

The clothing folds don't respect the form and posture of the body very well.

The left arm and hand looks like they belong to a vestigial twin growing from the side of the rib cage. The right arm is not properly foreshortened. Draw some knuckles on the right hand to see what you did wrong there.

The placement on the hand on the sword handle is poor. It seems unlikely for the thumb to be able to wrap around and under the handle.

The way you drew to lower lips makes it look like she has a underbite. Push it back.

On the plus side, the feet position and posture of the legs give a better sense of ground and space than the original. But the lower right leg isn't structured well.

the rule of "the distance between the eyes is equal to the width of the eye" often holds true even when doing 'anime eyes'.
Obviously it's not an actual rule and you can have the eyes be closer or further apart from each other, but it's a good guideline. If I were you I would try to avoid having the gap be equal to the width of two eyes, like you seen in some older KEY designs for example.

Depending on the definition of "new", it shows some potential, but I wouldn't call it a good drawing. Keep drawing!

Also, draw a nose.

no, what the fuck.
usually this is where you start to mask out the areas and basically start coloring.

your lines look boring because you suck at line weight. but that's beside the point. think about the bigger picture which is the finished piece. start thinking about what colors you want to use, what mood, effects you want to have and whatnot.
don't go a step BACK just because it doesn't look that great right now. inking is also a skill one must master eventually.

i wonder about that too.
I think if you are doing it for the hobby, you should just play around and experiment with the brushes, color-schemes and all that jazz.
in the end how good you are will depend on you understanding of certain topics (light, form, color, contrast etc)
good understanding = good results.
because beyond that, it's really just putting paint where you think it looks good, just like >>1601761
said.
my understanding is still very shallow with most of these topics, but i think the principle should apply to all skill-levels.

in any case, watching videos of other people doing their magic was be pretty helpful for me.
then there's books, tutorials and other articles.
