Golden age and silver age comics got NOTHING on todays comic art. The artists back then could barely draw and everything looked static and boring as shit. Of course today there are also a lot of hack artists in this industry who can't into anatomy or just trace photos and rely on crutches all the time, but the great comic book artists of today are lightyears ahead of any comic book artist of the 50s.

Imo "western" art don't really do it for me. The shiny, the plastic pages, the coloring has been done digitally and the sum of it all reeks from entertainment industry. It's hard to take seriously as a piece of art. Which is a shame because it's pretty much the standard on the american market, especially in superhero comics.

I think a really important thing to remember is that aesthetically appealing art doesn't necessarily mean good comic art. Layouts, eye flow, clarity and dynamism all take precedence. It doesn't matter how pretty your art is if it's hard to read. I recall someone on /ic/ saying they disliked Tim Sale a while ago, and while I understand his style may not appeal to everyone, his comic art has amazing clarity and eye flow.

>> No.1599474

Thats true, but easy reading garbage is still garbage.

Any of you tried to draw comics?
I'd like to start drawing one but I can't really decide how much time should I spend on a single page. I'm going for the realistic black and white, maybe just slightly stylized style.
Since I'm just an amateur hobbyist I don't want to spend tens of hours on a page but I want them to look good. Any tips or thoughts?

>> No.1599501

>>1599482
Do really quick thumbnails working out what each page will look like. Quick sketches to capture whatever, but put some thought into it. Maybe write a script if that's your thing. Enlarge the thumbnails to 11x17(make sure your thumbnails are at a ratio that allows for that.) Use a lightbox and start making more detailed sketches on a piece of 11x17 paper. Use this time to decide if you're truly happy with every panel and the overall clarity. Then transfer to bristol board, ink/color and shrink it down. If you're working with PS or what have you, just do that but with layers.

You'll quickly find it to be difficult. You'll need to rethink a lot of panels and you'll second guess yourself a lot. Comics don't flow in the same way films do, so if you think in motion, you'll have a hard time. It's worth it though, you'll learn a lot and finishing a comic is really satisfying.

Ideally, you'd do a page a day, but you'll probably take longer if it's your first time. Read "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way" and Scott McCloud's 'Making Comics", as well as "Understanding Comics."

>>1599474
I completely agree, but seeing a talented artist make a really confusing layout is such a pain in the ass.

>> No.1599516

>>1599482
Work on them until they look the way you want. The amount of time it takes varies and depends on level of detail and the techniques you're using. Generally, for pencils you're looking at a 10-12 hour day but you can cut that down by inking yourself.

Be sure to establish your layout and flow early on in thumbnails before hitting the pages. Once you have your layout locked in, your panels bordered and your perspective grids down you're off to the races.

>RUSSELL: Seventy pages in one month. How the fuck did you do that?

>POPE: You pretty much just put the seat-belt on. It's like having a one-month plane-ride. But that was what was needed -- it was a serious testing ground. This was in 1999, 2000.

>RUSSELL: This happened during your years working with Kodansha?

>POPE: Yeah, toward the end of it. A lot of those guys [working for Kodansha] approached making manga more like a TV studio -- where you had maybe 15 employees. But in the case of myself and Masashi Tanaka. the guy who did the book "Gon" -- remember that? With the dinosaur? --

>RUSSELL: Yeah, yeah.

>POPE: -- We were the only guys working for Kodansha who were working solo at the time. So Tanaka was pretty much my only role model. Him and Jack Kirby. I thought, "Jack Kirby did it while raising four kids; it shouldn't be that tough for me" -- I was only 28 or 29 -- "I can do this." I mean, it didn't look very good -- it wasn't pristine. It wasn't Barry Windsor-Smith having six months to do a page. But that's not what's necessary in manga. Culturally, it's totally different, the way they perceive comics. To me, manga's a different thing, totally -- it's a cousin of comics.

it's just too crowed and there's not enough contrast for the image to be easily discernible. Idk, maybe that's what the artist is going for but unless it's meant to be conceived as a slower sequence then he is not effectively pacing these panels.
If it takes longer to grasp what the image is then you play out the movement more slowly in your head, and yes that style takes a bit longer to read so don't give me any bullshit,

I feel like i come from such a different background from most concept artist /illustrators.

even though i always wanted to have comics as a kid i was never allowed to so i read novels instead.

i had always drawn stuff since i can remember. but my biggist influence at or artist i looked up to were the main stream ones..

escher, dali, standout. and i would have probabbly pursued that if it wasn't for vidya game concept art. especially the first halo.

wondering if there is any sort of comic book artist that would fit my taste of good story + great art. story being most important for me.

I like funky stuff. but i would prefer more finished realistic stuff as well.

Not quite the Mona Lisa, but during Rob Liefeld's recent meltdown at DC he tweeted about having to put up with shitty art on one of the books he wrote.

By an artist who completed the book despite being in the process of dying of terminal cancer, no less.

I always liked Rob because he was so enthusiastic about his work and didn't let the hatred of the vocal side of the comics community get him down, but that was seriously a dick move on his part.

Anybody here make their own comics? Could turn this into a thread similar to the "Anime/Manga" ones.

I was thinking of starting a webcomic. I found myself thrust into doing sketchy marker visuals for a living, I'm not the best artist in the world but I make a habit of frequenting /ic/, /co/ drawthreads and lurking conceptart.org to try and improve.

I wouldn't mind getting some feedback from you guys on the general idea if you're up for it.

I don't like Araki much either, I dont' get the endless dicksucking he gets

>m-muh beautiful men with full lips, struck poses and FABULOUS

And that's all there is to his art.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you've never actually read JoJo's the manga, because it's full of wonderfully inventive costume designs, locales, characters and action scenes all married to great storytelling and a warm-hearted, goofy sense of humour.

not that other anon, but really get off araki's dick. It's an art forum and so we will focus on the visual aspect of his work, which is pretty fucking bad
just look at that sameface here

what's more, his line work is inconsistent, downright ugly, and hardly helps to express weight or dimension

He's above average as far as manga artists go but that's not saying much.

Yeah, so inconsistent, downright ugly and unexpressive of weight and dimension that Gucci hired him to provide artwork for all of their flagship stores...

They judge everything else: texture, linework and meaning/political impact.

Not to mention the supplies available

Old school comics were limited to 28 colors of ink, because cheap. Now with digital you can make whatever the fuck you want

No they judge proportions sometimes and linework; that's it.
