The left is the original and the right is a drawing made by a different person. It's called a 'redline' and it's a reinterpretation of a work with a focus on correcting the fundamental flaws.

As you can see, Teal on the right was giving an example for anon on the left on how to build a figure with shapes, using familiar items like bowling pins and water balloons to give the idea of drawing with shapes some kind of familiarity.

I suggest you devote a page in your sketchbook to starting at blank, then making a dark as can be blob at the other end (without pressing down, just continuously shade on top layering with the pencil) . Then go from the lightest to the darkest by shading in between, lightly, with layerd lines. Practice shading, from tones from very light to very dark and as many steps as you can in between.
it also helps if you divide into boxes if you want.
I'm not sure if im being clear, my english isn't so good today.
I'm suggesting this because in this drawing you have hardly any mid range tones its very black and white. Practice shading is all im saying, Good luck

not the guy who posted that pic but I have this trouble of 'petting' my lines and shading as well. I've read Loomis where he states how the shadow is dispersed on a rounded plane and how there's a part of any rounded surface that's darker than the rest and helps to define the rest but I still have trouble shading properly to get the dispersed effect.

So what methods can I use to practice line control and proper shading?

I like your drawings on toned paper: >>1582220, >>1582221. The first one especially. Remember about foreshortening, don't use too much lines. There are some mistakes one the second one. Leg doesn't read, gastrocnemius and the back of the knee is not correctly connected. And don't use too much white, that can ruin your drawing. The best way to practice it is to actually go from dark to white, charcoal maybe or black paper. I suggest you to read Bammes regarding anatomy questions. Just remember one of his fundamentals: every limb in human body is like number 8, when going through the joint.

Good value study! Two little things Id crit:

You may wanna check the shadow going along her cheek again. It should comes up more steep next to the ear and goes down lower almost until the jaw bone. Just that regarding her headshape.

Another thing (per se not relevant for the actual study, but for presentation purposes such as this): your background is very busy, taking away focus from the study you presented us with. The original has a very smooth, almost textureless background, wrich makes the subject stand out nicely.

Anywho, just my 2 cents. Keep it up

Right arm seems off. Head is distracting, work it out a little bit more. Maybe study gesture so you can get more in a shorter time to be able to work on detail.

The previous drawing image (24) has better line work than image (15).

>>1583020
Back of the head is too small (this has been mentioned already). White for the sake of white. It's placement and application seems rough even compared to the roughness of the sketch.

>>1583120
Feet, hands and arms are often too small on many of these. Lines show some confidence, but others show disregard for the form. Look at what your drawing before you make a line.

>>1583429
These are better, the lines look less "petted" or sketched out, but work in some line variation.

I've read a little bit of Loomis so far. Really just the first 25 pages or so, so basically I've only read about angles, forms, building faces from the skeleton up, and emotions.

This is the first face I've ever drawn with the serious attempt to just sit down and draw a face. I tried using some shapes shown in the part of the book that give examples of blocky skeleton shapes, and then I used a few of my own.

There's obviously nowhere to go but up, but I'd like to know what I need to work on right out of the gate, just so I don't get stuck in a way of doing something only to find out that it's wrong later on.

So you read 25 pages of the book without drawing, until now? Because what you should do is follow every drawing Loomis shows. Copy his constructions, and copy every drawing he (blatantly) shows you. Think of how things are constructed while drawing, and WHY they are constructed in the way they are. Drawing right now just from things you've read isn't going to help you much. You need to copy his drawings and his constructions and his baselines, and then when you feel like you've gotten a good grasp on understanding it: try for yourself.

tl;dr Go back to the beginning of the book and draw everything Loomis shows you, whether he explicitly 'tells' you to draw something or if it's one of his examples. Just. Draw. It. All.

probably something stupid like dxm..

anyway, when i was a young man i used to draw a lot on drugs and i always ended up doing still-lifes that didn't look trippy at all, except for a few things which i later reasoned were more an effect of expanded pupils and swollen hands and other physical things like that.

thus i'm pretty sure most drug art is an affectation which has little to do with the drugs and more to do with the mythology of drugs.

well he's about right. the face is long on the lower left (she has a long face in general) and the eyes are too wide on the top two. For these I was thinking more about attacking a render rather then having an accurate portrait; as long as they looked human. As long as I had lines down where I could plot shadows and edges.
