Reminder that you're drawing a texture SPHERE. The textures should wrap around the sphere form, not a round 2d cut out that bloats slightly.

Try to apply tone correctly to the spheres. Keep one constant light source on all of them. Study back the basics of light and shadow and it's components such as form shadows, bounced light, etc. Textures doesn't mean anything if you fail at values.

Also, if you just flat painting the textures without giving a thought on how the textures are formed, it will look flat. Grab something 'textury', and look it under different light situations. Is the texture more prominent in the shadows? How about around midtones? And what does the textures look like under harsh light?

Anyway, I strongly suggest that you master drawing basic forms under light first before jumping straight to these spheres. And you might want to try the 'texture cylinders' template since it is easier in my opinion.

you stiffened her pose a little which has lead to the legs and belly being disproportionately smaller in you drawing. it also removes the torque, the tension from the pose.

usually if anything in figure drawing you want to emphasis the dynamics of a pose. but straightening out the figure is a pretty common rookie mistake so don't feel bad, but it's one to watch especially when it distorts the proportions.

The clouds are completely grey and white but they should at least pick up warm colors from the ground and cool ones from the sky.
Also I think if you'd paint the ground like it was lit by the sun the image would make a better impression overall.
A few additional elements in the image would be good as well as it would make it seem more alive- a wooden wind mill in the background, some birds, insects. that kind of stuff

try this, like spend every day at least an hour (better if its more like 4hrs) doing these poses, then read a bit of hampton (for example) and repeat. if you're having trouble drawing something from a different angle, it's because you don't understand the forms that it's composed of. You need to consult the sticky and practice drawing primitives from different angles and showing perspective.

The bottom half of the canvas is very strong compositionally. It's a tight action shot, but has plenty of breathing room with the solid grays of the plane.

The top of the canvas is too crammed in comparison. Partly because you have a focal point (the figure's head) so close to the edge of the canvas. Part is you have a central midground element (the figure) being cropped by two edges of the canvas simultaneously. Why is our element of interest being shoved off the canvas?

I'm not a fan of the pose, nor the design of the jumping figure. The action doesn't feel very well thought out, as the movement doesn't read clearly and the body is stiff. What happened two seconds before this scene? What will happen two seconds after?

The design feels very forced, with the unnecessary pistons and overly large hinge joints. These look like poorly adapted parts of construction vehicles, and not suitable for something nimble and agile.

The jumping figure also gets lost in the image. You have the same values used in the background, and very similar hues as well. Consider the overall composition and break things down into big value shapes (2-4 value groups, then try to keep those groups distinct). Look at the work of artists like Ruan Jia, who's great at defining clear value masses. Simplify and clarify!

As for the design...yeah I have no idea how to design. I also usually paint fantasy, so this is totally new grounds for me with in terms of design/subject matter. Any suggestions on where I can look for more design stuff?

>Any suggestions on where I can look for more design stuff?

You can start off your research by exploring what contemporary artists are doing in the field, namely concept art for games and film. Next you want to delve in depth with machinery, and military equipment (armor, guns, vehicles, etc). With that understanding in place, you can now look to unusual sources for shape and design inspiration (high fashion, animal breeding competitions, etc - the more unrelated the better). Put it all together and you get a compelling, unique design that's anchored in the real world.

Alright, first time poster here.

I've been sketching for as long as I can remember, never had any formal classes/experience with art outside of high school art courses. I put this together in about half an hour (excuse the graph paper, it was all I had).

Can I get some honest critique? I can't into landscapes and animals for shit, but drawing people has always come rather naturally for me.

Also, would anyone recommend a drawing tablet over a sketchpad + pencil/charcoal?

it's very very amateur. but it shows promise. basically it's a contour drawing with some messy hatching slapped on it. unfortunately it's quite a big step from where you are to the next level. you could study for a year and still not be very good. not because you suck or anything, just because there's a lot of stuff you have to internalize, like a googlebyte of data.

you can start on your magical journey by reading the sticky and/or going through one of the basic 'seeing like an artist' books (like 'drawing with the right-side of the brain." by betty edwards.) it's a very frustrating road though because your ability to see what's wrong with your work always outstrips your ability to fix those problems so you're never satisfied.

if you just want to have fun you can always just keep what you're doing but make it a bit neater and look at some tutorials and some youtube howtos. that way you can make satisfying work which you and others will enjoy.

stick with a pencil for now.

veramundis takes time to render his works well. Some of his pieces just feel like well rendered humans with animal heads put on their necks... I know that's what a lot of furry artists do and what I'm kind of doing here...

Well, obviously you want it to be seen. It is art after all.

That makes me wonder, how do you guys deal with ego when it comes to art?

Is ego a good thing to have sometimes? To be proud of what you accomplished? I know my ego gets in the way when it comes to art. I'll work a long time on something and think it's good, but when I ask for critiques people will say it's poor. It's discouraging and makes me want to stay away from making more art.

Ego is something of a balancing act. One end of things is getting constant feedback can hamper your work and make you hesitant on decision making. The other hand is what I call George Lucas syndrome, where no one says no to you and you get Star Wars Episode I.

As for continuing art. A professor of mine says something along the lines of: "A good drawing? You have to do a thousand drawings first before you get to the good ones."

Sort of like sex from what I understand: it get's better with practice.

Try to think and make sense, wtf is going on here? A shell is falling from that shotgun, so he just shot, yet he wasn't even looking at whatever he was shooting at, and no sign of any recoil at all? Or is that reason he'd be falling on the left? You get the point, think about what's going on, and be coherent with it.

You don't get it : there's nothing to give crits about here. Before anyone can give you crits that would help, you need to reach this minimal level where you have a little idea of what you're doing, and what you want to do. It's like asking for directions to someone in the street while being unable to tell them where you want to go. For someone to give you meaningful directions, you need to be able to decide where you want to go...

Read the fucking sticky, work a bit on the basics, then we'll talk.

anyway be more purposeful with your hatching.

a good way to get used to using hatches in a non-spammy manner is to consider the planes turning away from the light, then uniformly hatching only the most turned side-planes, the bottom planes and the corner-planes. if this is confusing ask and i'll draw you an eg.

but in general think about it as value not shading.

It's true.

People draw this shit because it's relatively easy. Yes it does take practice to copy a photograph, or half of one as that anon did, but the value range is small so it flattens out on the face area of the half portrait, and he/she isn't learning anything from it.

I know that from experience, because I used to do the same thing.

>> No.1558943

Try to vary the violet area a bit more, you could try using darker pigments to imply receding on the left and right. The valley area could use some more variation of pigment and value too. Try putting in some cast values. Moon light creates shadows too.

The upper half of the picture looks great in thumbnail because of the composition.

Dunno what you are using as ref, but the value structure you have is all fucked. If you are using a pen drawing or engraving or something, realize that all the pure black they use does not translate to painting.

Anyways, when you jump with values so much you lose out on A) believability, B) readability and C) the local value is unclear. So all the shadows should be a LOT brighter--the only places it might approach black are a couple occlusion shadows in the deepest crevices.

Well, I found some interesting reference here and spent a bit over an hour painting this. There are times when I find surprisingly good motivation to do something.

Is this any good? What should I do better, what to change, what to keep?

Your values overall are great but your brush strokes look ugly as hell. The nose needs work and attention. The eyes are decent. There is too much space between the hair line on the left and the eyes. The scarf is still outlined and stands out from the rest of the image.

You dont just do a shit drawing and ask what you should change about it, you actually have to learn the fundamentals
