Not my favourite, but I've been told it's my best work. Technically a collab though...but I ended up doing the vast majority of the work on it. In the final painting like 95% of the pixels on the canvas I painted, the only thing she painted that shows is some of the armour on the demon lady. So uh...I guess the design is hers, and then the painting is mine? I dunno. I suck with collabs since I end up painting over and destroying all their work haha!

Andrew, that collab is way inferior to your standard body of work. I much prefer the collab with the black, sci-fi dude over this. Not to mention your portraits are much better, even if they are studies.

The collab posted here has a dull composition, but the worst offenders are the figures. For both the girl and foreground guy, the legs are posed awkwardly, or look downright broken. There's no real life to the piece, and I feel you could have done a better job if you worked on it alone, and started with preliminary thumbnails and sketches.

I do like the dragon serpent though.

Out of curiosity, which piece(s) do you feel is my strongest? (basically out of the stuff on my website + the dragon I just posted + sci-fi dude + jaguar guy)

And I didn't want to post any studies since they are just studies...so it's like "look I can copy what I see", which is a bit lame I think. It is only a true showing of skill when it is an original piece (from life, imagination, or from photo but taking an artistic approach to it and not just copying).

Your best pieces are:
-"broadsword and beast" (though it could use a little more polish. It looks great from the thumbnail)
-black sci-fi guy (great colors and comp, even if it is a bit of a static picture - it still works)
-jaguar guy (surprised this isn't in your portfolio. The jaguar looks tiny)
-water dragon (still feels unfinished though. I would've gone for greater emphasis on atmospheric perspective. The colors are a little underwhelming too)
-the recent self portrait (if the edge issues are fixed. The edges around the illuminated collar are great. Get that variety in the face and it will be much stronger)

I like the portrait of Emily a lot as well. I feel it would look better with some temperature/color variety (perhaps some cool grays in the background?). It feels a bit too sepia atm.

The recent quick color comp looks like it has potential. Depending on how the rendering is handled, it could be great, assuming you get appropriate refs and do some sketches to finalize the pose and armor. The colors are vibrant and fresh. This could be one of your better pieces if you can pull it off. Reminds me of Ruan Jia's newer work.

Opal landscape is interesting. You could probably create a nice finished piece if you use that as inspiration.

Though they're not 'pieces', I like the recent plant and animal studies on toned paper, the recent life drawing studies, and of course the figure painting demos you've done.

And to add:
If you were to remake the collab posted here from scratch (changing the vantage point, composition, poses, etc), you could probably create an interesting piece. The concept is there, it's just the execution that's lacking. The rest of your work has already shown that you should be able to do much better.

Thanks for the detailed feedback man! First thing is to finish up that new colour comp (I'm honoured that it reminds you of Ruanjia!).

The jaguar guy I am pretty happy with, I just never bothered updating my website haha! I guess he deserves to be in my portfolio though. As for the size of the jaguar, looking again it might be a bit small yeah. According to wikipedia they only get like 2.5 feet tall though. But I don't think he is that big in the painting.

I'm not too sure what it is that makes Broadsword and Beast and the dragon thingy appear unfinished...I tried to leave them a bit painterly. I dunno, I guess it's a fine line between painterly and sketchy.

Interesting too that you think the collab is so weak technically, because the girl I painted it with I think is a better artist than me haha! Attached is another one we were working on a while ago but got abandoned due to personal issues that arose between us...it's not done obviously, but I still kinda like it. This one was mostly her work though, I think I just fixed her values a lot, did most of the colour work, and then fixed a lot of small shapes in the painting (some of the trees, the cast shadows etc). Composition and design and stuff are all her.

>> No.1523971

>>1523949
Did not know jaguars were that small.

For the dragon, another detail pass on the head and back could help without losing too much of the painterly look. With more atmospheric perspective, the extra detail wouldn't be necessary IMO. The colors also feel a little 'preliminary'. I feel like if you had a maroon underpainting, and had tiny gaps of that original color poke through, the colors would look a lot more lively. Compare your work to min yum's side by side, and note how lively his colors and brushstrokes are.

For the broadsword, some extra polish around your focal points would help. Your sketchbook has many examples of much stronger rendering, so the quality of the finish here feels outdated compared to your current level. I like some of the raw strokes in the background. Some areas look like they were built up with overlay layer (the yellow light poking through the trees). Additional opaque strokes would help get rid of that feeling. The tree trunks in front of the yellow light could probably even be a strong red. The trees in the foreground look like they too much black, especially when contrasted with the yellow rimlight. The branches on the ground are great.

The snow collab is a lot better than the demon girl collab. I don't like how midground dude gets lost in the midground trees. I also don't like that the background has finer detail than the foreground and midground, but I assume that's just because it's unfinished. Composition is good, but might not be the best. I think I might still like the sci-fi collab more.

your colours are a bit too...acidic? not sure what the word is but they really clash with each other. try not to make them so neon, I get that it's accurate to the character but your work would greatly benefit if you tweaked them a bit to be more harmonious.

>your colours are a bit too...acidic? not sure what the word is but they really clash with each other.
Too saturated. Together they look garish.

>>1524055
You can make colors harmonize by moving them closer together in temperature, (for example, warm blue/cold yellow) or by graying them more, or desaturating. When you mix orange with blue, you get grey. On the color wheel, that's the center. The closer you move to the center, the more desaturated it gets. This is good to use to mute complimentary or otherwise obnoxious colors to make them play well together.

Honestly, you need to work on value before you get too far into color. You can play with it, sure, but don't go doing serious studies yet. Check out James Gurney's book on color and light, It'll tell you about value and color.

Lips do not exist as a flat plane. They wrap around the cylindrical shape of the teeth, so the corners of the mouth should be further back than the front tip of the lips. Keep that tooth cylinder and perspective in mind.

The transition between light and shadow on her cheek is too harsh - making her face more planar and masculine.

The design of the nose (both the bridge, ball and nostril wings) are way off, as is the eyesocket. Study that area in detail.

The eyes are creepy, and the eyelids feel like an afterthought (especially the lower eyelids).

Are you using the smudge brush? You need to consider where the transitions between light and dark are hard and when they are soft in a reference, and then you need to consider where they should be hard and soft in your work.

If you don't know what you're doing, the smudge brush just fucks everything up.

I'm happy by how it looks visually, and I use it as a pringboard for other drawings. I also use it as a reference to what I have done and what I need to improve.

Or where you implying that I was satisfied with that level of drawing? I am not, and I haven't even thought of stopping my practice and I strive for improvement!

Why are you proud of this. It's awful. I've also seen the same piece posted a week ago. Try making something new.

One of my favorites. Acrylic on cardboard. The grass is made up of cut pages from a book. And the flower is from some scrap book paper. My original character.

Forgive me oh kind sir. I should rephrase my statement. The character in my painting is originally based on a random sketch made from a water spot on a piece of paper. It was not originally made from any reference, on hand nor from memory. It was likely a combination of thousands and thousands and millions and millions of different images, ideas, thoughts, and emotions that we're going on in my mind at the time. The path and journey of wherever the strokes of my pen and working of my brain traveled together to create it. Any similarities to other characters or works of art are purely coincidental and unintentional.

That thing is adorable though! I'm glad you brought that to my attention. An honest coincidence. What is he from?

Nice. Where did you learn how to draw like that? What artists did you look at? I'd love you be able to draw line details, like that.

This is what I'm proud of most, it's not very good compared to these amazing digital and traditional pieces you guys are throwing out there. But it something I made and I'm happy with.

Though I must improve and get better hopefully reaching one of you guys standards.

I see shit like this and think...

probably 16, white sub-urban middle class, wears band t-shirts and listens to "alternative metal and dubstep". Art is their "out let"... using only biros and textbooks. Occasionally crayons that turn to paint with water.

Uploading images of skulls with speech bubbled hearts or rainbow pukes to DA and favouriting desktop wallpapers of realistic pokemon on multihued backgrounds and loving Instagram filters on starbucks mugs and stencil graffiti.

i think this is the best ive ever done.

it is a shame, because i know it is bad in many diferent things, but i just didnt finished anything really, after this. ive been spending all my time doing studies and such.

i know i could do the same piece, with a much better anatomy understanding.

Not that other anon, but basically I think the problem is largely that the lower lid droops so low. Typically the bottom edge of the iris is flush with the bottom eyelid. I don't do stylized stuff personally, so may be a bit off, but this is my take on it (plus a bit of other overpainting on the image...hope you don't mind!).
