Hey guys, could we talk game development? don't know if it belongs here, but if you guys want to talk about it that would be cool. Or I can just post some of my art and tear me apart on that.

I suppose we could talk about the art part. What've you got in mind?

Just a few ideas to throw out there.
imagine these ideas "artistically" in a game
Blindness, screen goes black, and if you touch something, you're able to get a white outline of that object and when you don't have contact with said object, the white outlines start to fade, sound has a graphical representation on screen.

maybe I'll just spill the whole idea, see what you guys think.
My friend and I have always been fascinated by first person dungeon crawls, and the popularity has died out and only survives on nostalgia now with titles like "etrian odyssey" or "the legend of Grimrock" so we're trying to put a bunch of new ideas together for a fps dungeon crawl. OP picture would be a general idea for a main character.

You'd wake up in some sort of underground maze and be "blind" from here you'd have to find a light source. You have feathers so overtime you drop them, making a path to retrace your steps, in intense physical conditions, you'd drop more. This would also be a means of being tracked.

we don't want to give the player any information really, we really like the idea of Dark Souls Atmospheric story telling and wanted to try it out too. The idea is to literally and figuratively leave the player in the dark. As more light is on screen, more story elements would be visible, (being able to tell where you are, what's going on.)

sorry, not first person shooter really, more of a first person dungeon crawl. Here's the most "combat" we've come up with. You carry two items, a glass jar and some sort of rope. The glass jar can hold liquid and fireflies. Fireflies can light the maze, but this attracts enemies. It can also be placed though, so, our idea of "combat" would be setting rope traps of sort, putting the "lamp" down and attracting an enemy from there. Enemies would not respawn and there would only be a few in the whole game (think the "big daddy" from bioshock"

We want water to come into play as well. the idea is to have some extremely dark and stressful areas to be rewarded with more peaceful rooms, think the shadow link battle room from ocarina of time.

Essentially those are the biggest main concepts I can think of right now. The story that I'm trying to write is about the garden of Adam and Eve essentially. I may change it though after realizing that bible based stories are sorta like. Everywhere.

overall atmosphere is going for a Majoras mask/dark souls feel. Dark with bleak hope, but the hope is there. I'm a sucker for those stories.

Pic is random sketches.

first of, remember the style should complement the gameplay

personally, the firstperson view does not seem like a good option because

A, its really hard to make firstperson to look good because it requires a very special style and way of playing the game to be good, looking at the drawings it really doesn't feel like it would suit f-p and i can only assume you guys are beginners making it even harder.

B, movement and knowing where to go/ where you have been easily gets cunfusing and wonky, combine that with your "trap combat" where you need to know where the enemy is, when he's coming and where you should go to hide could be a very large flaw

of course, all of this could be solved, but there is a large chance of some of the fixes fail and causes the game to have a large "crack" in the gameplay.

Something i would recomend is over-head pixalated (maybe something like hotline miami, with a diffrent style)
this would solve a lot of issues and make it easier for you guys

my 5 cents on it

I have been having trouble visualizing a way to make enemies and have the player take them seriously. The best my friend and I can do is sprites in a 3d environment, and that worked for Doom and Duke Nukem because those games weren't supposed to be taken seriously. We may suffer from this. And your B point is also heavily taken. the screen would have to be clean and make sense or else people are going to get fucking headaches from not understanding what the hell is going on. Thank you for your nickel, seriously.

If you're recommending retro pixel art style you might as well recommend a first person perspective like pic related.

I get the feeling something like this is what they've been planning anyway.

I've been going back and forth between the idea of a single player dungeon crawl and a party based one. A party based one would have to be on a grid, which I believe takes away from of the opportunities we get with a free roaming First person game, (portal with no portal gun and "I live at home" budget)

>> No.1504903

There have been free roaming party based games. Check out Wizardry 8 for example. It works all right.

w... what? I'll have to check that out. Also if we make it party based, that allows us to throw in a bunch new elements that we didn't have before. WHICH REMINDS ME OF ANOTHER IDEA I HAD ONCE.

Had a lot of fun with this yesterday, so I guess I'm back to spill some more ideas.
This current idea were working on has gone through complete over hauls over the last few years, like, it switches from concept to concept while keeping the dungeon crawl gameplay. A base that we worked off before was a dungeon crawl that took place in a depressed person's brain and the characters were things like imagination, destruction, so on and so forth. The concept of the game was to explore the maze, but then use certain abilities of the mind to complete the maze and allow the depressed person you were inside of to make decisions. It was scrapped due to a lack of ideas, but the concept still feels pretty solid.
