But yeah, I see the old woman's body-thing as well. He never claimed to be a great artist though, he's just trying to help out people who do not get how it works. I do not agree with that image as well, if he drew the first image out of his imagination it's basically takes the same skill as 2, even when drawing someone's portrait you're always told to capture their likeness, but not something that would seem like a flaw, so both would require memorization and observation, but one requires less time because one is more or less used for animation.

Hm, taking a look through this thread I'm not sure what to say really. TLG is probably the best redliner around these parts. As others have said, his advice is really solid. He also does have a pretty good understanding of anatomy, and a very good understanding of gesture and perspective.

The issues with his figures are not so much in the anatomy itself, but it is more of a rendering/lighting issue. His shadowshapes are inconsistent and not well grouped, halftone modelling and grouping also isn't ideal, edgework is not the greatest etc. I did a quick paintover with a soft brush just addressing a few of these issues, but as you can see it is very similar to his, I just got rid of overemphasizing small forms and I grouped things a bit more. The underlying anatomy and figure is solid in his. (and I guess I should prepare for people to tear the shit out of my paintover now)

Anyways, all this is a little besides the point. Are his redlines helpful? Yes. So who gives a fuck if they look a bit weird in spots. At least he is being helpful around here instead of bitching about someone who is better than you.

Everything in that red line is wrong. The figure that Simon replaced the first one with is barely better than the previous one. Legs are too tensely drawn for a girl just relaxing by the pool, it seems the only reasons her legs are up are so that Simon can show off her muff. There's NO tension or weight in the arm even though it's supposed to be supporting her weight. She also looks like she's floating on top of the concrete instead of sitting down, like she doesn't have any buttocks or something. And yes, the stomach and arms are lumpy and saggy.

That's a fair enough assessment. But I think that it still should abide by lighting rules and be consistent--as I mentioned before, the forms are misrepresented when the rendering is off.

I guess it comes down to approach, like Hogarth says "fuck you lighting" to show forms, but someone like Hampton can both show forms and keep things consistent. I think there is no need to fuck things up, then don't fuck things up. If construction is the main goal, then a more line based approach is probably better anyhow. If you need to still render a bit, then keep it very simple, and still use lines. This is kinda how I might approach it then (if construction truly was the goal, then I'd remove the rendering altogether or at least moreso).

I loathed how people would reacted to him. I don't know the guy, but I know the hyperbolic anons that buzz around his ass. I'd admit I was jealous at first at how easily people would post flattery around him.

But then I actually started 'looking' at his redlines. I started to read the comments he wrote in them. They are cliched, egotistical, and actually less helpful than they appeared at first. His redlines are primarily focused on getting you to copy his look. They're about 'critiquing' you into copying his style. They don't objectively critique, they bully you into believing you should have done it the 'Teal line way'.

His followers would have you believe he was only showing you the 'correct' way of doing it. The harsh words and the different-looking complete redo was for your 'benefit'. And they would chastise anyone who questioned his redline. The are treated like testaments. Anyone who questioned them was to be humiliated, cast as a troll.

He has got talent, and he has got skills, for sure. It's misfortunate however he doesn't have the humbleness to engage other eager artist with them. It's misfortunate he feels the only way to help others is to force his methodology onto them. That doesn't help the artist think, that whips the artist into copying.

(And yeah, I always thought his 'girls' look a bit sickly. Head of a young girl, body of a middle aged woman. The arms and legs would be too skinny, losing the voluptuousness that was being tried for in the original. When did I ever say they're at the same level? Simon is obvisously more skilled than Liefield. He can be assed to show entire figures, for one, instead of hiding body parts under rocks.
