i don't know about all the terms but they tend to 'blow' the darks in nudes, you can see that band of red or green or red and green usually and a crappy colourless blob, which isn't anything at all like real life. they use to do 'bracketing' where you just take the pictures at different exposures and refer to one for the darks and the other for the lights. i thought hdr would do that job in one image, does it not?

It's fake/shit HDR where people think adjusting some levels and adding a few filters in photoshop makes it so when in reality real HDR requires different shots of the same photo in different exposures and even then the whole thing has to be done with subtlety not giving everything horribly visible halos.

Or you could learn to shade using strokes and not the side of your pencil, which, when properly blended with layers, looks loads better than using a blending tool

I'd post examples but I'm on my phone. it's a traditional technique for graphite so chances are you've already seen it in use.

Isn't there a sheet with Emma Watson making a lot of different facial reactions?

Also does anyone have any tips for painting..well, with intense colours, all of mine turn out to be "too subtle". I can't always see colours correctly so I guess that doesn't help..

how much referencing is still okay? I hear people constantly say use reference, but I dont feel much pride in having copied the picture that much (value-wise at least). Pic related.

however much you want is okay. ideally you use as little as possible and more in a research-look-understand kind a way. not in a "copy" kinda way. you can tell a heavily-on-reference-relying artist from a mile, and their bragging with their work (online) is usually proportional to their lack of "real" ability and expected improvement.

if you stick to the simple rule of always using your own photos. then the ref is part of the creative process and you don't need to feel bad. plus no copyright issues.

you should of used closer compliments in your picture there, using true compliments with that intensity puts it well on the wrong side of gaudy.

see how just backing off the intensity gives the picture a lot more harmonious.

...Does it matter what they look like and what gender/race they are? I thought the whole point is to draw what you see or use it as a reference for something else. If you think she has rhino legs, use it for a rhino drawing or something, it might be fun. :)
