Two big static forms, ribcage and pelvis, they are connected with the spine, open your preferred anatomy book and study how close they are with each other, connect them with meat and you are

basically done, no matter how extreme the pose they will not bend and the will not be taken apart because they are static hard bones, only the meat piece will bend and stretch, you also need to learn

how the shoulders are constructed, those lines above the breasts that the other anon pointed and said that you draw symbols, you don't know what they are there for, those bones together with the scapula

form the shoulder, you must really come to understand anatomy to draw with forms and not boring flat lines. If you suffer trough some anatomy studies you will stop the suffering from the luck of anatomical knowledge for a long time

We are talking about the same thing with a different point to prove, i wanted to say that he should think of the pelvis and ribcage as solid forms and connect them with lines to indicate the skin when drawing so that he doesn't end up with a sausage shaped torso, but yeah if you take it to that extend the ribcage does bend.

>Isn't it right to have a reference for poses?

Being able to draw without references does not mean one has to forgo them. It means you can process forms in your head reliably, to the point that you would never be limited by what references are available to you. If you find a reference with a good pose, but taken from a perspective that doesn't fit your composition, you can rotate that figure in your head.

It also means that you get more out of your references and studies, because you can deduce information that isn't present within the reference. After studying them, you can formulate and retain a 3D image in your mind. That is extremely useful for comics and animation; if you had to copy a photo for everything you want to draw, it'll take much longer, and you won't really know how to exaggerate for effect.

There's more to the face than the eyes, nose, and mouth. People also have variations in bone structure, so the heads themselves should be shaped differently.
And a very helpful tip for escaping same-face syndrome! Don't draw Dragon Ball Z to try and escape it. The creator of that series is the world's worst perpetrator. Watching series that have variation and drawing those characters might help slightly more. When I got into drawing, I loved Death Note. The variations in the characters are subtle but realistic, so I could tell you immediately that Near has one of the softest complexions, Mello has the most alert eyes, at least three characters do not have eyebrows, Mikami has the most gaunt face like a prisoner on death row and Matsuda looks like a green college grad with a baby face, all of this based on bone structure and subtle differences in features. Hell, I haven't even watched the show in four years and I still think that's accurate. But even though I was new and terrible at drawing, I still drew the eyes alert and I still avoided drawing eyebrows that weren't there.
I fell into a rant there but the point is basically that you should find subjects with variation because that will make it five times easier to draw them with variation. If possible, watch a new show or something because just liking the characters and drawing them casually might show some progress in how you perceive different traits.

And apologies because I'm very sleepy today and I'll bet that made little sense, but I tried.

>How exactly? This is actually my sketch before.

You used chicken scratch to compose a contour drawing, rather than starting with a clear pose and constructing on top. The neck is too thick in the final and not centered. Breasts begin too high, don't droop enough for their size. There is no mid-section, no room for intestines. The decoration on her upper left arm does not agree with the direction of her arm. Left hand finger gesture is too bendy, looks like arthritis. Right hands grips knee like a claw rather than being relaxed. Right leg does not seem to connect to the pelvis well. Your attempts at drawing cross contours for the legs are flimsy and show you don't actually know how to draw basic forms correctly.

You can have all the anatomical knowledge in the world, but if you can't draw basic primitives correctly, that knowledge will not help.

>>1461684
not that anon but I don't think that's true. there's a fair bit of rendering going on considering it's all in copic markers. an effort to describe forms was clearly made.

I'd say the biggest problem is the lighting. i'm not familiar with copics so i don't know how far things can be pushed, but if the moon is backlighting on the figure then there's going to be some rim lighting and a darker center.

basically the lighting is not dramatic enough, everything is uniform and it looks like the figure is just posing in front of a set piece rather than actually in a moonlit field.

>> No.1461689

>>1461684
I think you might want to catch up on some reading about what drawing in symbols entails, then maybe you have a better time of spotting if someone actually does it.

Hint: A bad drawing doesn't always mean someone is drawing symbols, they could just be bad.

I'd love to become a graphic novelist. I'm working on one right now called Breakthroughs in Science. It's set a decade or two in the future, and a new type of toy has been developed, with advanced AI and seemingly a capability for emotion; the perfect companion for only children and introverts. The story follows two of the first models, Jay and Kie, who were together since they were built and all throughout testing, but were sold to different children. This little fucker is Jay.
I have a few larger ideas, but I'm doing this first to get the hang of the comic-making process. It won't cost as much effort on the illustrations (because the things are really just made of cylinders and spheres), so I can pay more attention to effective paneling and storytelling techniques.

Partially it's the lines and partially it's the fact that it doesn't look like you've been practicing for more than a few months. I'm not going to act like I know how much you've already done, but it looks like you need to study a little of everything. Check out Ctrl+Paint, or that link up there to Vilppu, and if there are any specific questions you have I'd love to go into more detail because I like helping.
>>1462806
When you're doing large details, you're supposed to draw from the elbow or the shoulder. This is both because the wrist has too small of a range to do a long, confident stroke, and also because if you use your wrist too often when you draw it can lead to shit like carpal tunnel, so save it for the small details. *inserts shitty diagram*

*cracks knuckles loudly*
Proportions are fucking great because they can make or break a picture no matter how good the anatomy or rendering is and no matter what style it's in, but they're so easy to keep in check; You just need to know what to look for. Mirrors are godsends for proportions, too.
Arms:
When down, elbows should reach to the waist, or right about the bottom tip of the ribcage. Always double check this in a mirror if you're unsure. When lifted up, elbows should lift just the perfect height to rest your forearm on top of your head, AKA just above.
Wrists, although they cannot physically touch the shoulders they are attached to, reach just 1"-2" short of the top of them. When down, wrists are in line with the pubic bone and fingertips should fall at right about the bottom of the thigh.
Legs:
Sit with your knees pulled up to your chest. The distance from hip to knee is the same as the distance from hip to wherever on your chest the knee lines up with; It's not the clearest landmark. Distance from knee to ankle is approximately the same distance from knee to ass-cheek; you can check that one by sitting on your feet.
Distance from hip to ankle looks to be the same as from shoulder to fingertip.
Face:
Distance from top of the ear to the bottom of the ear is the same as the distance from the brow to the septum. Side note; drawing lines around the head at those points and adding a perpendicular line down the middle of the face is a great way to keep features in-check. Other side note; eyes have sockets. Find where they are and never forget their presence.

And when you use any one of those, check it in the mirror first. One, because I tend to be off by a few centimeters, two, because everyone is a bit different, three, because I'm short, and four, because I assume you're male and there are probably more differences between men and women than I know about, which is also why I didn't try to say anything about hands, feet, shoulders and hips.

I should try making a chart or something sometime because that's a lot of writing.
>>1462827
As for perspective (which you might wait a while before playing around with), all you need is the ability to draw your subject at a straight angle and the ability to draw a rectangle or a box in perspective. You draw your subject in the desired pose at a straight angle, draw a box around them, and mark off the landmarks with lines. Then, you draw the same box, foreshortened to the desired perspective, put the landmark points on it, and put the body in so it matches up with all the landmarks. This works for limbs as well as bodies, objects as well as people. (Pic is here javascript:quote('1459086'); )

This probably won't be useful for a while though, because you would have to become confident in your abilities to draw things at a straight angle first, and also at visualizing in 3D space.
Now that I think about it though, practicing with simple objects might help you learn to visualize in 3D space. I'm not sure! I hope any of this was helpful to you, though.

Funny thing about 2001: A Space Odyssey and it's sequel.

If you actually watch Space Odyssey, it really is just breathtaking shots of landscape and stuff floating in space. The only part the resembles a cohesive narrative script wise, were the parts with HAL 9000.

When the sequel came out it was universally derided, even so it had a pretty good story. It just didn't have the mind bending visual splendor the other did.

And here's his Spirited Away review.

http://confusedmatthew.com/Spirited-Away.php

It was actually a requested review, so he wouldn't have done it otherwise. He was asked.

He did not even know it was a big movie either, he just reviewed as if were something that just flipped on the tv late at night. He doesn't even remember any of it.

However, he does critique this movie's narrative flaws, and the general public's reasoning for liking it.

So yes, Lucky Star is the greatest anime ever, because it actually has characters that develop over time. Also there's no overly long fight scenes like all other anime, it does not exploit women for fanservice and it actually teaches you stuff.

>So yes, Lucky Star is the greatest anime ever, because it actually has characters that develop over time. Also there's no overly long fight scenes like all other anime, it does not exploit women for fanservice and it actually teaches you stuff.
You have to be fucking kidding. Lucky Star has zero character development, relying instead on old archetypes(Konata is the otaku, Kagami the tsundere, Muyiki the dojikko, ect.), and is just a generic "cute girls doing cute things" show, of which there are fucking tons, and it's not even the best among those. It's fucking moefag shit designed to push merchandise. It may not be exploiting women in the way we typically think of it in the west, but trust me, it's exploiting them.

Off the top of my head, some better anime:
Casshern Sins
Ergo Proxy
Joshiraku
Kaiba
Katanagatari
Lupin the Third - Mine Fujiko to lu Onna
Nichijou
Princess Tutu

Breast size has more natural variability and is less important to age than relative proportions of the bone structure. In particular, it is important to separate the concept of hips, which is determined by the trocantur, from the buttocks, which is muscle and fat. It is quite possible to have round buttocks on narrow hips, and that is exactly the configuration you must learn if you wish to draw "loli" with a naturalist bent.

Arms are too long and lack gesture. The bones in the limbs of children tend to have more curvature, and girls in particular can hyper-extend. While this is a style choice, the way you rendered the core suggests this approach would be more suitable.

You've drawn the latissimus too large, and shoulders too wide. When arms are raised like so, the shoulders pinch inward.

The facial features are poorly placed. The eyes do not follow the orientation of the head. The face gives the impression the head is smaller than it actually is.

The pose itself does not particularly suggest a youthful girl in a natural state, nor does the facial expression fit the body language. I'd also venture to guess that you dislike drawing hands. If you must, hide one hand, but not both.

>if you have been around the

I used to do pre-press work on manga, including adult manga where there are a lot of first time artists. This does not speak anything to my amateurish drawing ability, just my familiarity with the subject.

For someone drawing actual manga or animating, an inability to draw hands is rather difficult to hide. I would not have to question their ability, since they have to draw many varieties of poses, and many variations within poses. But I do question yours, since this is only a pinup, and the body is turned and the head pushed back in such a way that we should expect to see at least a hint of the palm of the closer hand, or a few fingertips of the farther hand. In conjunction with the left arm that does not recede correctly, the appearance is that you were trying to avoid the hands. That may not be your intention, but it is how viewers may read it. And that's ultimately more important for such a representational form of cartooning.

Show one hand. Show just a part of it. Dispel the viewer's suspicion that your affinity for that pose is due to your distaste for drawing hands.

Is there some magical "tell" that allows you to always tell that people are lying about how long they took on their art? Or do you just like to shit on everyone randomly and claim they're all posers who put up art and call it doodles to try and avoid too much criticism?

Word of advice, Bobuel; it aint a commission unless someone pays money for it. People who do drawings for crap like DA points and then call it a commission are fulla shit.

I don't think it works that way, Jonathan.

Sure, if you intentionally want that look. But what most people end up doing is use it for basic shading, and they use tones with lpi levels that far exceed the capabilities of monitors, getting a muddied, moire mess.

There is manga toning, and there is using patterns as textures. The difference is quite subtle, but it's there.

Not really? It's essentially just using something other than regular currency for the exchange. That being what makes is a commission; work done for some sort of payment, not necessarily money. If there's no money involved it's just filling a request.

I'm the princess sailor moon anon from the draw thread.
Your drawing is cute but I can tell you didn't put a lot of effort into it. You should pay attention to anatomy, even when drawing stylized things. Use references when you're not sure how to draw a certain pose, do figure drawing, yadda yadda you know the drill. Stylization comes after learning the basics of realism.
I like how you drew her hair. Where's the bow to her sailor fuku though?

Even then calling it a commission when the "payment" was only for an intagible form of credit that can only be used in one place is misleading.

One could consider verbal praise or the requester's satisfaction payment in that same sense when in reality including these things under the label of commission just makes the term lose meaning.

How is "I did this service in exchange for a form of currency" misleading?
>One could consider verbal praise or the requester's satisfaction payment in that same sense when in reality including these things under the label of commission just makes the term lose meaning.
This is not even close to being the same thing - DA's point have an actual value that you can use to buy things(from their shop, but you can still buy things), not an abstract value.

You are being needlessly anal about this.

Firstly, that's a pretty weird pose.
Face looks kinda ok, but the hair looks kinda static, same goes for her right hand, it's in a very weird angle and seems off.
The tits, believe it or not, are affected by gravity and stuff like that, complex poses involve complex undestanding of the body parts and how they work.
As always, practice your anatomy.
Torso looks kinda short.
Legs look ok but her right foot seems to be in a completely different angle than the rest of the body.
