Post here all the universal truths about form, light, colour, composition etc
They may be obvious but lets spell them all out here!
I'll start -

Where there’s light there is texture and form
shadow is smooth, weightless and even.

If you have a hard time balancing a large composition with many elements -
adding a busy background as opposed to a more blank one helps a lot

Mixing with white always makes colours cooler and duller.
A way to avoid this is to use glazing rather than mixing

Something to meditate upon.

Better example of relative color perception.

A and B are the same color/value

That one's good too, specially for drawing, but I like how the previous one adds colour, temperature, texture to the mix. All that can and should carry a great deal of information in painting.

In a good, wholesome painting there are 3 aspects to consider and focus on and make work with each other. These are:
a) warm/cold
b)light/dark
c) composition

>> No.1460953

warm colours make things seem more up close
cold hues send objects visually more to the background.

Same effect with saturation (less colour, more distant)

you mix complimentary colors to get chromatic blacks, this gives you a black with a temperature. there are heaps of variations which can be used to achieve all kinds of effects.

Do you have an example? I don't think I understand what you mean.

Read Alla Prima by Richard Schmid. It's basically a bible of painting.

That is not a one sentence tip/truth but ok. Painting alla prima from life is a great exercise with watercolours :3

i'm too lazy to see if I can find any illustrative material but the truth goes for large mural like compositions with many figures or other elements that are hard to balance - having a varied background helps in that way that you can use it also for a balancing help. If it's just clear and minimal, you need to work harder on the front layers.

Just a cheap trick i guess but if it looks good then all's good!
