Trying to broaden my influences.

Can we have a thread on contemporary artists who are obviously influenced by academicism? Artists like Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville, those are pretty much the only two I know and that have kept my attention for a long time. Does anyboy have any others?

Jenny Saville is actually really far from academic art...if you want contemporary people working in an academic fashion, look at people who teach at/attend/went to various ateliers (there are dozens of them now).

ARC is a great resource even if their philosophies are slightly close-minded...you can see their competitions from this year and years gone by:

They also have a collection of "living masters", and a list of schools that they have approved (researching who is connected to those schools is a great way to learn new names). There are a bunch of really good schools now, a ton of little ateliers in the USA, some bigger ateliers in Europe, and in Russia they still have the Repin Academy up and running in St Petersburg, with some really great draftsmen being produced.

Other than that, good places to look would be groups such as Portrait Society of America, or look at competitions/shows like Masters of the American West (which has some reeeaaally good artists).

Anyways, hope that helps...just a few ways to find new contemporary oil painters. A lot of the ones I mentioned though probably have similar styles, especially if they received training in a rigid school environment.

They're getting better, just take a look at the most recent Salon. They opened up a category for imaginative stuff, and there are a lot of great illustrators that are being noticed for their work (Dave Palumbo, Julie Bell, Volkan Baga, Donato Giancola, Lucas Graciano, Michael C Hayes etc).
