double jointed fingers are so fucking weird

>> No.7097764

>>7097735
If you're gonna do these at least have the decency of lighting them properly.

I'm referring to the reference pic btw.

thats what makes it harder though, the bad nondescriptive lighting

>> No.7097797

>>7097735
One of the artist's jobs is to convey clarity where the reference doesn't show it. Just copying something to the letter is pointless if the reference is bad in itself.
You have to salvage stuff like this, not just mindlessly go with it.

Is picrel double jointed? Looks normal to me.

>> No.7097839

There is no reason to be able to draw this. Yeah, it's cool if you can do it but this hand pose is not really effective at conveying anything. Reality isn't always right

Job, practice and challenges are 3 subjects which are handled differently.
I'm more critical of challenges because they are there just to prove skill and draftsmanship (and sometimes commitment, like inktober) more than anything else, this one expects you to exert all of that then some, but I find little use on having a picture that's basically a template for anything goes and doesn't serve as a point of comparison once you're done, if you've fucked up the anatomy tough luck because this poorly lit picture isn't going to help you discover why and you'll need to rely on your assumptions or already established knowledge of hands, so at best you've already filtered out /beg/s or people who don't practice hands from this challenge, if there's no critique then it will be useless, and from what I've seen on this board people tend to ignore posts from less skilled artists while only addressing the more skilled ones, so for self analysis, maybe not so useful depending on skill level.
Art as job is filled with shortcuts so even if you aren't already good at it any hops can be bypassed by working smarter, not harder, artists and teachers tend to be very dogmatic about breaking your back to get better, and while I understand why they do it, that doesn't mean you need or have to. For example, if someone provides you with a shitty reference you either request a better one or find it yourself, if you're good with 3D modeling software this becomes pretty trivial. Design will come on top if required.
As for practice, there's just no good reason to do OP, there are way better approaches for learning, riddling your brain with intentional confusion can be only justified if you want to test what you already know, if that's no the case just stick with anatomy studies and use actual good lit references for foreshortening practice.

You are right, I should have worded that differently and not just dismiss this kind of "experiments" as completely useless. It wasn't my intention. I just think that things like these can be a trap for beginners.

I 100% agree with all you wrote.

I know, right? I did my best to make do with what I was given, and I wasn't given a whole lot (but I guess that's the point of the "challenge")
I actually had to reference my own bony-ass hand in this pose so I could get a better idea of wtf I was looking at

>>7097839
>>7097865
I know. I just saw this and thought, "What the hey, might as well give this a shot" even though it has no artistic value.
I mainly just wanted to see if it would be as infuriating as I thought it would be. (it was)

Nigga there is zero benefit to being double jointed unless you want to make a living as a contortionist.

This thread has been pathetic. Leave it to this board to over analyze and critically think themselves out of drawing a single fucking hand. It’s a challenge, it’s supposed to be fun. Don’t any of you draw?

Here’s mine, I decided to go the opposite way and emphasize the joints.

Very nice! I love the soft colors and overall style you went for. Since so many people wanted to argue visual aesthetic vs. realism, I think this is the most appealing way you could represent a hand at this angle.
