Sometimes it’s fun and sometimes it’s a chore, when you have no motivation you just have to sit down and force yourself to do it. I think consistently drawing, and really, really thinking about it is what leads to small breakthroughs in your understanding that then lead to periods where you have a lot of fun playing around with it. Be self indulgent with your subjects, draw them if it gets you drawing even if other people don’t like it. Try to find ways to push yourself in your areas of incompetence with those subjects. Also, if you are killing yourself over accuracy, keep in mind there are so many other elements to a picture that can make it look good you could be studying. finally got around to watching crit stream, thanks again Gob, and ty for the how to render suggestion - I really need it, cause yeah I don't think about different materials at all kek

just wondering though cause idk what is albedo? bedo? I can't 100% make out, but it was in reference to objects and how they reflect light. Oh, and also how would I avoid using 'local colour' especially within shadow and stuff cause I think I do that with literally everything I put colour to.
figured I'd ask instead of googling cause fuck it, it's conversation, and maybe it'll be in words I can grasp lol

"Albedo" is a term I've mostly encountered in the 3DCG world, you can think of it as the base luminance of the material (for instance a black cotton t-shirt has a low albedo but a white sheet of paper has a high albedo). Researching how materials and lighting work in CG has helped me a lot with figuring out how to handle materials in painting. Look up "physically based rendering" (PBR for short) if you are interested in that topic. The book "How to Render" by Scott Robertson is also a great resource, and provides a very logical and analytical approach to the topic. As for local color, when I say that the colors feel too local, I mean that there is no apparent hue to the lighting or shadows. The situation in real life that gets closest to this feeling is an overcast day (since both the warm sun and cool blue sky are occluded by gray clouds) - however this causes a subtle desaturating effect which imo you should exaggerate when painting. If you are going for a more standard lighting setup however (sunny day), then you can just make all of your light areas more warm, and dark areas more cool.

Awesome, thank you! I have both How to Render & Colour and Light I just need to get around to them... colour scares me in general, I've avoided it a long time & it feels like there's a trillion things I gotta learn.
As an example, when I paint & need to change value I know merely to shift hue a bit along with the value change - but the hue shift is arbitrary & it's sometimes only a few degrees, some times it's more than a few. I really don't know, I just basically make it up! Just based on what you said, though - when shifting hue should I figure if I want to move towards warm or cool based on whether the shadow would be within sunlight or like idk near bounced light, or just the sky blue light? But then how'd I figure that? & when should I choose to desaturate or saturate? When I get to the darkest of darks in the picture I especially struggle with the to saturate or desaturate, cause if I desaturate I feel like I'm just almost using black & don't want people to think I am, lol.
Actually you needn't answer any of this if you don't wanna I just realized how lengthy this is, I'll just go google stuff but I do appreciate previous comments!

Okay so my big recommendation for you is to learn how to paint with traditional media. When you have to mix every color you use in your painting it forces you to focus on and get good at applying color theory. It may sound daunting but you can get started with a few tubes of acrylic paint, some cheap synthetic brushes, and some canvas paper or bristol or whatever (if you want I can recommend some paints).
As for digital painting, you are too focused on messing with sliders right now, instead use a color palette when you are painting, and only pick colors from that palette or from your painting. This narrows down your decisions while you are painting drastically. Now when you need to make a color warmer instead of "how much do I move this slider", you just add some red or yellow until it looks right. Instead of lowering saturation in the color picker, paint over the color with a complementary color or white/gray/black. It will be hard at first but stick with it and you'll grow a lot.
When you feel like you have run out of values (darks too dark/lights too light) this is because you haven't left yourself enough "room" while you are painting and you get backed into a corner. To avoid this, leave yourself about 10% on both sides of the value scale, until you get later in the piece.
Shadows tend to be /more/ saturate than lights, and you can get away with exaggerating this quite a lot. Also, the more times that light bounces, the more saturated, but less bright it gets. You can find an example of this effect, by looking at the space between petals on a flower, the deeper parts of the crevasse will have more saturate light, because the rays have bounced more times before meeting your retina. This happens because the apparent color of an object is created by an asymmetrical absorbtion of the visible light spectrum. For instance when a ray of light hits a red apple, all colors other than red are absorbed a certain amount, (cont'd)

so if the same ray of light hits the apple again, more of the non-red light will be absorbed, thus increasing the apparent saturation of the light.

Attached here is a palette to get you started. This is somewhat close to a palette I would use while painting traditionally.

I have way more saved up on my phone and in random places on my laptop and PC. I mostly save stuff that is inspirational but sometimes I'll save something that a newer artist did that shows huge improvement. I love seeing others grow. Pretty sure I have some random paintovers I've done over the years in that one too. I should probably Orga use at some point.

I feel like an absolute brainlet reading all this, I've gone over both posts like 3 times now lmao.
I actually have some gouache paints that I've used like twice because not only does colour scare me but traditional does way way more - would that be alright to learn with in regards to colour mixing?
I have like 12 tubes of different colours that I don't remember atm but I'm more or less certain I have that palette jpg, except maybe the cyan.
traditional is something i've wanted to do so much more but don't cause scary so this is a good kick in the ass to get started!

Oh god gouache. Well if you already have it you may as well use it; personally I hate gouache, it's extremely temperamental and not good for beginners at all imo. My first serious painting class was gouache based and it made me hate painting for a while. YMMV but acrylic is way more beginner friendly and straightforward to work with.

hmm broadly speaking, I'd say draw more in general, do more studies, and draw from life (observation) more. More specifically, I think you need to work on placing basic shapes in perspective and drawing 3-dimensional forms convincingly.

>>4392432
oh and here's a general motivational comment: I know a lot of artists get paralyzed by fear at various points in their lives. I've certainly struggled with this. Just remember, when you are doing any kind of art, you can never mess up so badly that yourself or someone else will be injured or killed. You've really got nothing to lose through failure, but everything to gain through success. Good luck dude, go make a mess with some colors and get back to me, I'd like to see what you come up with.

>the first of most being why would a child draw John Quincy Adams
In elementary school, we had weekly assignments that culminated our learning about a long series of related things. JQ Adams, in particular, was from when we were doing "President of the Week". It's exactly what it sounds like.

This illustration is from not-so-far back. Some DADs were definitely born by then.

a commissioner is vastly more likely to make money compared to a comic artist. You'll need to be insanely popular to be able to sustain yourself off of comics. Comics also need writing skills which need to be developed just as much as art.
Many mangaka are actually replaceable as fuck, its an incredibly competetive job with absolutely insane tryhards as your competition. Just look at the most popular magazine, shounen jump.
It is a literal popularity contest, you get published for as long as you are popular, if your popularity fades, you get axed, to this purpose there's a dedicated poll you can send in with each issue of weekly shounen jump. Other factors are compiled issues(hardcover/tankobon) sales.

On the surface, yes, I agree commissioners make more money. You can make a solid $100 on a piece of work, or several hundreds/thousands even per month, but you hit a ceiling. I dont mean just Jump, like Webtoons for example, or YouTube. The comparison I'm making is that you have say a pool of 30 commissioners willing to pay $100 per piece of work, but if your product has a mass audience, like on youtube or as a comic or merchandise line, you have a way bigger scale, a consumer base of 3 million. In so far as the writing part, I think if you do develop your writing you get an edge, because so many comics out there are awful. So you dont have to be super swole at art, just being a mediocre writer is enough to make you stand out. Maybe it is because the time investment is so critical that your competition is actually quite low.

Yeah they can be pretty awful since you have to make something to fit a commissioners wishes and they can be really picky sometimes. I listen to a lot of interviews with major artists and they pretty much all don't take them anymore because they'd rather spend time realizing their own "artistic vision" or whatever and don't want to deal with the potential drama.

I think the major thing is as long as you aren't relying on it for money (and therefore pretty much stuck if your commissioner is an ass), it can be a nice way to make something extra.

You know her load is going to be too huge, so you promise to deliver it yourself, but in the end you couldn't draw enough dicks to please your subconscious who demand smore joocy dicks.
>Lonku
This isn't sandman, this is actually the dream, your subconscious was able to convey who your biological father was. Be aware that your own parents have been replaced in the night by imposters.
>Courtier
Sphinxes represent intelligence, the one you met was so wise and captivating. You shall soon be cucked by your wife.
>bezdomny
As a child your soul was actually split. Half of you lived in one body, the other half in a different one. This made you confused. Eventually the half that was in a different body died, and now all of you lives in your present body.
>gottagitgud
The deep, threatening cave represents women. You're afraid of women.
>Genzai
The 3D clouds represent souls that are trapped in another universe. You were once a hero and you promised that by being born into this timeline, you will retrieve the thing that you need to save your old planet. you forgot your epic mission so now you're stuck.

Pretty interesting interpretations, I should probably mention I actually could've learned how to play the organ (and I can play piano) but I never took it up, and I'm a little bummed about it because apparently there's a massive demand for it at weddings and funerals since hardly anyone plays anymore so it pays really well. I'm actually considered particularly gifted musically and did A LOT of it, but I never enjoyed it. Meanwhile I suck at visual art but it's all I want to do with myself, go figure.

Anyone read any good books about art recently? I just finished Daily Rituals Women At Work. It was interesting but I'm not sure I learned much.

Of more interest I also read Jeff Koons Conversations with Norman Rosenthal, and holy shit apparently Koons was like best buds with Salvador Dali back when he (Koons) was a nobody? Some people are just stupid lucky. Also Koons has a weird Freudian obsession with objects having "masculine" and/or "feminine" qualities, I'd be willing to put down money he's into futas.

i have zero self-confidence and the thought of another human being wanting to be my friend makes me feel like it's an act of pity on their part. just being a third wheel and overly self conscious all my life conditioned me like this probably

Well at this point, IRL or online, having friendship is just about the same in my experience. There really isn't a difference.

ah I see the problem then, you took "fearful and emotional" as an insult, when I was trying to remind people often what we feel is not the same as a fact, just because were afraid of something doesnt mean it's true. In this case, you might be afraid that forcing yourself to practice makes you improve less, but it isn't necessarily true.

But you seem to get your ego bruised too easily, and see anything as an insult and beneath you. And honestly are you confused? I'm the one who said let's test this.

Hey man, I'm almost 30 and started drawing back in 2011. I've more or less wasted my 20's do to my mental problems and having to take care of my mother who's mental problems are worse then mine. I wasted my 20's going in and out of mental wards and playing video games trying to escape this nightmare I can't wake up from.

Tfw sophmore year in highschool decide to do art for the rest of my life. Skipped all sat and any test prep classes because i had no plans for college. Got praised a lot in school but didt let the ego get to my head because im not doing art for anyone but myself. Im always improving and expanding my knowledge and this has been an on going thing for 6 years. Obviously reached a level that is professional but i still want to aim higher. No where els to go but up.

dear dads,
I'm glad you're here. It's a long, long, frustrating journey, but it's nice to have company.

the age thing, I feel self-conscious about it, sure. But it's not going to stop me. I'm going to keep at it because even a little, it's satisfying.

In regards it ghosting, it's just kinda rude to make someone worry that you dropped dead or something. Just last night I went down the rabbit hole of trying to find any sign that an old lassie was alive. We talked just before a hurricane hit, and then they never came back online. Maybe they wanted a dramatic exit from LAS, but if that's the case it was pretty fucked up to imply that they died in the storm.

I was a musician from my teens up until I slipped a disc in my spine around 28 or so and lost the fine motor skills in my left hand.

I spent the next 7 years with no creative outlet and just buried myself in MMOs and other nolife vidya to escape. Started art two years ago at 35 and I think I'm happier now than I ever have been before.
