Don't forget to have fun

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just remember: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

im not saying do those things specifically.
but you do need an understanding of the basics of perspective. which start with the cone of vision and station points and one oint perspective.

become a master in that first before moving on to 2 point.

eventually you will know what degree your lines approximately need to be where the vp should converge.

eric olson is awesome, gary Meyers fundamentals of perspective covers the same stuff in half the time.

different anon but i suggest watching marc leone on youtube. he has a ton of videos on figure and perspective. once you understand the fundamentals of perspective then try to freehand them. there's no point drawing 100 boxes if you don't understand where to connect the lines right? you'll get there be patient. also if you can draw on big sheets of paper so you have more freedom to move your arm and have more space. i use newsprint(18x24) because its cheap but you can use whatever you can find.

Look at box 36, the lines going inwards are going upwards while they should be running in parallel to the visible lines.
Also, dot the lines you wouldn't be able to see if you were looking at it from that perspective to make it less confusing.
Another example is 38, the top line is better in perspective than the bottom one which is to upwards.

For someone who's "picking up a pencil in the intention to draw" for the very first time, is drawabox a good first resource? I tried diving into "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" from the sticky to start and felt miserably overwhelmed from even the basic exercises. I went ahead and did the first lesson at drawabox and it felt much more manageable. It even felt a little cathartic when I was doing the planes exercise and the lines came so easily. But now I'm worried this is just babystuff and I'm wasting my time. Either way I think I'll do a lesson a day for now, then the homework during my lunch break at work. And I'll post the results here as a sort of incentive not to slip a day

One thing though; it says to draw with your shoulder. I'm trying to but I think I'm actually drawing from my elbow? I'm not sure what it's supposed to feel like drawing a 2 inch line with your shoulder

If you want to learn perspective, literally print out a one or two vanish point perspective diagram and practice drawing shapes onto them for like a week, then practice drawing Your Own vanish points with Lines and drawing shapes onto then for a bit, then just start to alternate practice drawing without them and with them.
Thankfully with perspective you can learn quite a lot very quickly and you'll have a better grasp on how a shape should look from perspectives relatively quickly.
It's very boring but it is a basic skill which you should at least practice a little if you ever want to progress in drawing ability.

good values are consistent, use a shadow on her portrait as a barometer for the other shadows, in this case I used the shadow on her wrist to create the shadows on her chin, eyesockets/eyebrow, hair and even her shirt. use white as highlights on her face and black to indicate where the skin folds, eyes or where planes overlap. if you use white and black tastefully rather than an all you can eat buffet you can make portraits pop. heres a quick paintover to try to further illustrate what i mean

I think it's important for beginners to draw the whole ellipse around the form, otherwise you don't learn to 'see' how the contour line wraps around the whole shape, and how it reveals the perspective.
It's very common for beginners to just assume that a slightly curving line across a shape just signifies roundness, but that's essentially just a form of symbol drawing. There is only one correct line for the underlying shape, and that's the line that follows the form in correct perspective.
First and foremost, you need to learn to draw the individual geometric forms accurately before you start trying to piece them together. The reason you think it's hard is because it is, and you're not quite at that level yet. As you don't seem to fully grasp perspective enough to eyeball a basic cube yet, I'd recommend starting out with a basic perspective course. After that you can start going through drawabox or dynamic sketching if this is the type of drawing you want to do.

unironically loomis. learn to draw his mannequins, then do gesture drawings with them and make sure the proportions are correct. then go deeper into loomis-simplified male anatomy and draw figures from reference. you don't have to learn every single muscle and bone, just the basic parts that you see. then since you want to draw knights, just study armor and learn to break it down into simple forms like boxes, cylinders, spheres, etc.and add the details once you've broken down the whole figure into those simple forms. it will take a lot of practice and many tries but i believe you can draw knights if you at least try to do these things, anon.

First start with gesture, it’s more important to be able to construct a simple dynamic form before learning more detailed anatomy. Use the site quick poses and start with about 1 minute to draw the figure ( 2 minutes if you need more time to start). Remember to focus not on the countour but the movement of the figure and exaggerate it. After you do a couple of gesture drawings, like around 10 or 20, then kick it up to about five minutes to try and capture more detail. When you do this, then you may begin to feel you need to study more about human anatomy. Look up a couple of anatomy books from Loomis, Vilppu or Bridgman. Bridgman (Constructive Anatomy) focuses more on blocky detailed anatomy that you can use Vilppu (The Vilppu drawing manual) or Loomis (figure drawing for all its worth) to build off of. Afterwards, you can come back and keep progressing your ability with studying the human form. After a couple of days (or more) of practice try drawing a human a human form first and later armor on top of it. Keep practicing that, and you should eventually get to a level you’ll be somewhat satisfied with.
Tl;dr
>gesture with one to two minute interval, focus on movement not contour
>look up Following Anatomy Books/Artists
-Loomis — Figure Drawing for All it’s Worth
-Vilppu — The Vilppu Drawing Manual
-Bridgman — Constructive Anatomy
>keep practicing anatomy drawings and gesture
>do some normal drawings occasionally with knowledge you know for fun/see where you’re at
>start layering armor on top of human forms when you feel confident

Keep a schedule with this. Something like an hour a day for ten days. If I missed something or made an error someone please correct me.

Why do you think there would be NO benefit to practicing what you do with your non-dominant hand? If nothing else it's a challenge that will be forcing your brain to encode and process the behavior more than normal. What should I do? I’m not that art illiterate to not know when something is going wrong but I don’t know what to add either and how to improve in certain parts of art. see what you can do, and what you cant.

yeah I think I'm making it a thing for me now where I do doodles in uneraseable pen first, then go back and do a pencil version of a more focused version of what worked from the pen version.

Something for me about pencil where once I start using the eraser things start to get fucked for right brain impulsive focus or something. I find that getting rid of the eraser gets rid of a lot of anxiety for first drafts for whatever reason.

Draw a lot of real humans figures and heads and don't be afraid of books. You need to feel perspective and froms.

Online video courses are cool. Study anime alot, study hairs and expressions. They have weird proportions and stuff so you gonna get use to it.

Don't cry that you never gonna make it. This shit take some time and effort. After some time you will be able to visual forms in your head and construction wouldn't be necessary.

You're trying to do way too much. A drawing like this is good and fine, but alongside lots of studying as a kind of summation of your work to try and see progress. Decide if you're going to focus on gesture, or form, and take it from there and just do pure gesture/ form exercises. Once you're confident that you're feeling the gesture/form as you're drawing, then you can start to put it together and do figure drawings. But if you can't tell gesture apart from form, or anatomy, then you first need to thoroughly realize and understand that, practice it, and then try to combine it into a singular figure drawing.

Help!
I'm trying to shift from acrylic to oil paints but the colors just seem to blend on wet on wet not giving me the color on the palette. I'm used to working in layers on acrylic. If i want a light color over dark i just wait for the lower layer to dry than slap a thick stroke over that. When i do this with oil even while using more paint it still manages to mix with the lower layer. How do i paint correctly? Or is this facilitated because I'm using cheap student grade paints? Please help i don't want to make a new thread for this.
