IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

What is the best pen to use alongside watercolor? I wanna get into it. well, hi

>> No.3189950

I'm getting VERY frustrated because I seemingly can't even draw what I see (in this case, a game case) in perspective correctly no matter what I do.

I'm sitting here at my desk, with my sketchbook, i have it sitting vertically. As I am sitting straight towards my desk, the game case is lying flat on the left side towards the back.
I draw that, making sure to get all of the angles/etc right. Checking with my pencil and whatnot. And it only looks right if I put my sketchbook far towards it/put it at the same distance/etc away. I know perspective is screwy but this just has my brain all mindfucked. How am I supposed to draw accurately/etc if everything keeps being screwy like this?
I don't have any pics because theres really no need for any.

Yeah, I'm checking the angle with my pencil, and I try to transfer that to paper. I'm trying to work on a vertical surface as much as possible, even with my sketchbook, because drawing on a flat/table surface just distorts the hell out of things.

Try to be calm and if you can't. Back the fuck away from drawing and do something else to relax.

My goal is to be able to draw realistic people, anatomy, etc. So I suffer through prokos horrific humor. And whatever recommended videos/tutorials in general there are. Namely because learning from books isn't really my style for whatever reason.

I just hate drawing something as I see it, making sure the angles are right and whatnot, and it still somehow ends up wrong.

Have a reference right next to your painting, paint on top of your reference to get as close to the right colour as possible. I always mix colours myself and layer them with lower opacity. If you have the right colours in the right places you're on the right track!

Honestly if you're on a budget I'd suggest ink pot and brush. getting a large bottle of speedball superblack or whatever it is from amazon is pretty economical. Brush pens are nice but refill costs will build up very quickly. Any technical pen will do, you might want to put some extra cash on some refillable ones but honestly I've never had any issues with cheap ones except. Nice eraser like a kneadable reaser works well with ink - art gum erasers are nice but I've found I sometimes smudge my inkwork with those. Other tools you might want are t-squares, speed squares, protractors or other drawing guides (french curves, circle guides. etc.). Probably want to look into different papers as well but I don't think I can help you with that.

I'm using a textured brush to draw the shape specifically this one: https://transfer.sh/d0JnB/Untitled%20Brushes.abr
You'll have to test tonnes of brushes to find the best one and use a brush as an eraser, that exported one will probably have my brush tool presets but you can make another one into an eraser. There's at least three different brush textures used in the image, one that's probably some kind of rock texture, the wiggly carpet texture and the base one on the walls that might just be a regular paper texture downloaded off google, inverted and set to screen mode and the contrast increased.

not guy you asked question from but i found out Robertson's boxes are the easiest method to understand heads in perspective.

just learn them in the 6 orthogonal views, learn perspective drawing transposition and start with easy exercises such as houses, buildings, or cartoon faces. once you get hang of it use it with human faces as that one has a lot more features hence more energy consuming, not that it is any harder.

there is no actual loomis, hampton, hogarth "technique". i read them all and they just give you a nice diagram with some tricks to work from, or feature placement notes to enhance your comprehension. the "technique" is the same as Robertson's boxes, except worded in a more confusing way that makes it harder to transfer head drawing to any other things, like cars. the technique itself is transferable.

reilly actually has a technique but to understand abstraction it would be best if you understood construction first.

Both, although it's most useful for drawing form imagination. It's purpose is to make the complex problem of presenting a three-dimensional shape on a 2 dimensional plane really simple. Its supposed to make you understand the planes of the head so you can construct it better, once you've done so by grinding for hours drawing different poses you SHOULD have a firm grasp of what part of the face/head looks like in each position, essentially giving you the ability to present a 3D object in 2D space. Once you can do that, reference drawing gets simpler, as you don't have to imagine anything.

If you can't handle advice and constructive criticism.. you might want to find a new hobby.

If you'd like to keep trying, maybe think about the reason you drew this floating rose. What do you gain or learn from it?

If you want to make a finished drawing, study roses and fill a few pages of quick sketches. From different angles, with different lighting, etc. Sketches are simply evidence of what you have learned about a certain form. Sketch until what you're drawing makes sense (look at the leaves of your rose, do they make sense or did you just draw lines because 'leaves have lines on them'?) and then you're ready to make finished drawings.

You don't have to keep the exact same colour for people to know it's the same character. Skin colour changes a lot depending on lighting, what matters is what colour it represents, rather than what it actually is.

Watch a bunch of colour theory videos on youtube as well as skin painting tutorials. Even if you're not painting you're gonna learn how skin works so you can simplify it.

Your shadows look weird, unless she lit by a candle next to her face. It has no relevance to her skin tone at all. When doing shadows try going half way from your base tone to black, and changing the hue slightly if you want to make it cooler. SLIGHTLY. Making something cooler doesn't mean going all the way to blue.

You're on the right track with the warm and cold colours but what's the point doing that but not choosing the colour of the skin? There aren't even shadows on that chibi reference you have, so the colours that work on that don't necessarily work with a more detailed pic. This does for the hair and clothes as well, don't colour pick them. You need a balance of colour. If you have one bright saturated colour, the rest should be muted, so choose which one you want to stand out.

OK back at it. The neck should be on a S shape. While yours look more cylindric. The whole head-neck area should be more tilted to the paper's left, due to the neck's S curve. So yeah, the whole neck-head needs to be redone.

Other than that, the giraffe's left front leg is too parallel to the body. Gah, if you read Vilppu that would be easier to fix and understand! Back legs are also too long.

So the mistakes you made are due to "inaccuracy" in angle measurement, it's rather common but not impossible to fix. Using Vilppu's gesture technique and genetic framing is a way to set up the landmarks to avoid mistakes like this better. In a way, think of getting the skeleton right before placing the meat(form). If you did that first you wouldn't need to redo the whole head next time... If you know what I mean.

Drawing manual by Glenn Vilppu. It's very easy to understand and made for beginners. Although chapter 3 and onwards absolutely requires the knowledge of perspective to move on. But the first 2 are enough to fix the problem with the giraffe. Think of chapter 3+ as embellishment.

I forgot the name of the Russian book, only skimmed it and it's the same one I've been using at my atelier so I'd say that is good! Though the technique in itself can be found online. It's called observational drawing, and you'll be applying framing, comparative/relative measures and sight size.

Just to note, I only got that knowledge/trick by combining multiple books I've read. One book doesn't solve all just you know.

The neck looks wrong because it's too tilted attached to a ribcage in perspective. Resulting a stretchy look.

The original neck works because the ribcage isn't in perspective.

I've been hanging around the /a/ drawthread for the past two weeks while getting back into drawing. My experience has been this:

>"How do I do this?"
>"Just copy from other works and work from there until you develop a style of your own."
>Draw a couple things while relying heavily on tracing from multiple sources
>"How can I improve on these and make them unique?"
>"FUCKING TRACING FAGGOT AND YOUR DERIVATIVE "ART" FUCKING KILL YOURSELF"

How do I wean myself off of relying heavily on tracing and improve my overall lineart? The main criticism of what I've done to date (Besides "You traced you hack") is that my lines are almost all the same thickness, which those with an eye for art say makes the piece look "lifeless". Right now I'm drawing only with a mouse and the line/curve tool in Paint.net.

Go back to using a pencil+sketchbook. Drawing decent paintings with a mouse is more than possible (albeit time consuming), but you're skipping out on a lot of vital concepts by starting straight from digital. If you want more finished works, you can always scan or take a picture of the sketch(es) and polish them from there, but either way it's best to get familiar with the pencil.

Good question. What are your goals when it comes to drawing? Chances are, while studying realism, learning proper human proportions, etc. are vital to producing almost any form of artwork, you may have to branch out and dabble into other areas that'll let you get closer to your goal. Heck, even studying anime artwork is a legitimate way of practicing, but without decent knowledge of how the human form works, you'd be hard pressed to be able to make proper stylized works. I personally went straight to realism and then incorporated the concepts I'd learned from there into my more stylized drawings.

For my fellow anons who are struggling with anatomy: I found David Finch's Dynamic Figure Drawing Volume 3: The Body on TPB and it's been great so far. I feel like his method is more acessible. I know it maybe be a bit too "comic booky"for some, but for these guys I say: just take his "skeleton structure" and draw the muscles/flesh using other artist as reference.

For someone who struggled with loomis, vilppu, reilly method and many others it's good to finally kinda see a light. Hope this helps someone.

Well, the last two days have been quite interesting for me. I started off with the only portrait as seen in the image and I kept wondering why I couldn't get it to look right after measuring for hours upon hours. I decided to then move to the page to the right and draw a bunch of eyes because those were the biggest problems on my portrait.

But as I kept drawing them I realized that I couldn't stop them from looking flat or just plain wrong. I kept trying to figure out what I could do as I kept drawing more and more eyes but only once in a blue moon would I get something that looked ok. That's when I decided to try out one of the the Bargue Plates I kept hearing around these threads and decided to perform my first "study", I quote study because I'm not 100% sure how to do a study.

I went back to the left page and copied the bargue plates trying to understand why his eyes made sense and mine didn't. I think that's when I reached the conclusion that I kept attempting to draw every single line I could find. Simply put, I kept thinking the more lines I placed the better my art would look, this was completely wrong and so I felt like over the last two days I learned something critical that might help me push forward into the future.

More lines != Better results

This following is just theory from a novice, but I think the overall theme here is that whether you're a line artist or someone who wants to do portraits, trying to remove lines that are hard to see. Those lines are probably subtle bends that could be best capture with shading.

I finally gave it my own shot after doing just 9 copies (the portrait on the bottom of the left page with the iris), I think the improvements already show after just doing that little and so I am eager to keep looking into more complex studies and devote myself to this methodology when I get stuck.

But yah, to the original person >>3191791 I would say you can get a lot of help from this red/blue line but don't be afraid to try and recapture that coy look of the original by tilting the head a bit towards the camera like it was, but using perspective guides etc. like this artist did with the loomis manni to help you get everything right.

If you find a site that no one else talks about that for some reason tells you everything you want to hear, doubt it.
Read a little closer. The whole tutorial is just pretty words - there's no evidence, there's no proof (and it contradicts the very idea of the childhood learning period, which is very well established in motor, interpersonal and logical contexts) and there's only empty, cheery advice made to get you to blame yourself for failure.
It teaches you to expect nothing of yourself and disguises it with "real artists aren't this good", when it's likely just the author trying to screen themselves against criticism. If you read closely, it promises nothing and explains nothing, just tells people to shut up, not expect anything, blame everything on themselves and uphold the myth that everyone, regardless of motor skills, three-dimensional thinking and imagination, can mysteriously duplicate the well-documented childhood growth period if they just stop blaming their teachers and blame themselves.
Talent is a bigger factor than you're being made to believe, because among prodigies, there are indeed people who go from 1 to 10 as soon as they pick up a pen - this is because to them, completely naturally, they see the object as it is in all its detail, register light and shadow, get a sense of its mass and proportions, and then just write it down on paper.
It can feel unfair, but every time these arguments come up, there's absolutely no logical meat on them and have no backup. I have no experience with reasonably competent artists who've started after the 10 years old, and not even here we get people who start from zero at twenty-something and get to a level where you can actually enjoy their art.

See what you mean about the tilt, and I agree. Get so focused on attempting perfection, I lose appeal/ character. Thank you very much for your thoughts.
